Chapter 1 The first part we are old

we three 杨绛 583Words 2018-03-03
One night, I had a dream.Zhongshu and I walked together, talked and laughed, and reached some unknown place. The sun had already set, it was dusk, and in the vast expanse, Zhongshu suddenly disappeared.I looked around, but there was no sign of him.I called him, but no one answered.I was alone, standing in the desolate outskirts. Zhongshu didn't know where he had gone.I shouted loudly, calling out my first and last names. The cry fell into the wilderness, as if being swallowed up, leaving no faint sound behind. The complete silence added weight to the dark night and deepened my loneliness.Looking forward, it is a layer of darkness that seems to be layer upon layer.a sandy soil road was under my feet with the accompany of woods and flowing water. i cannot tell how broad the stream was.Looking back, it seems that there are contiguous houses and houses, which are places where people live, but there are no lights, so they must be far away.Did Zhongshu go home on his own?I have to go home too.I was about to find my way back when I suddenly saw an old man pulling an empty rickshaw and stopped him.He also stopped the car.But I couldn't tell where I was going, and suddenly woke up in panic.Zhongshu was soundly asleep on the bed next to me.

I turned around and waited for Zhongshu to wake up in the middle of the night, and told him that I had a dream, and so on; so I complained why he left me without saying a word and went away on his own.Zhongshu did not defend him in my dream, but only comforted me by saying: It is an old man's dream, and he often has it too. Yes, I have had this kind of dream many times, the dream is different but the sentiment is always similar.Often the two of us came out of one place, and he disappeared in a blink of an eye.I asked everywhere, but no one answered me.I either searched back and forth, walked into a series of dead ends, or waited for the bus alone at the dark station, waiting for the last bus, but the bus never came.In the dream, I was miserable and anxious, as if as long as I could find him, I could go home together.

Zhongshu probably remembered my complaint and made me have a dream that stretched thousands of miles.
