I have had the help of many people in the process of writing this book, a few of whom have contributed decisively to it.My colleague Christopher Koch not only developed these ideas with me but also commented extensively at several stages of their writing.I dedicate this book to him.My reviewer, Barbara Grossman of Scribners, made sound suggestions that improved the manuscript considerably. Some superfluous material has been decisively removed, while the remainder has been persuasively edited for greater clarity. There are still parts of the book that are difficult to read, and that's my fault. As my personal assistant for sixteen years, Maria Lang not only deciphered my handwritten manuscripts chapter by chapter, version by version, but also for the correct formatting of illustrations and obtaining legal use rights, necessary for the completion of the office. All kinds of chores have paid hard work.I would like to thank three of them in particular.

I would also like to thank those friends who provided suggestions and comments on earlier versions of my manuscript. They are Tom Albright, Patricia Churchland, Paul Churchland, Odilecrick, Antonio Damasio, Peter Dayan, Ray Jackendoff, Graeme Mitchison, Read Montague, Leslie Orgel, Piergorgio Odifreddi, VSRamachandran (Rama), Paul Rhodes, Terry Sejnowski and Dan Voll.Their comments have greatly improved the manuscript and eliminated many errors. They are not responsible for errors that occur. I would also like to thank Jamie Simon for redrawing many of the illustrations and creating some new ones, as well as adding some neat notes.

In the end, my wife, Audrey, was able to tolerate my preoccupied thinking about these difficult questions for months on end.Without her loving support and understanding, this book simply would not have been possible. ①The adjacent movement area is also destroyed. (1) Sir John Eccles has previously suggested that proximity to Area 24 (Sports Area) may be where "free will" lies. ①Professor Odifreddi pointed out to me that it should be assumed that there should be some consistency between decisions and corresponding behaviours.
