Chapter 16 Section 8 Tower Burial

Pagoda burial, also known as spiritual pagoda burial, is the highest burial ceremony for Tibetans.Only the Dalai Lama, the Panchen Lama and other great living Buddhas can enjoy the pagoda burial. After they died, they were washed with salt water, dried and preserved with spices, and then placed in specially built gold or silver towers for future generations to worship. Funeral customs are a social phenomenon, and they are not static. In fact, it has been seen from the above that the funeral rites of many ethnic groups have changed. The most obvious is cremation, which was originally used by many ethnic groups, but later became very few.Nowadays, cremation has been re-emphasized, and it is almost universally adopted by urban residents. There are more and more cremations and burials among ethnic minorities, and funeral rites are gradually simplified.
