Chapter 1 foreword

We have come into contact with a large number of ancient and modern seals in our work, and gradually accumulated some experience through sorting out and displaying work.We do not agree with saying that the seal is a trivial skill, nor do we agree with the view that the seal is an embellishment of calligraphy and painting works.Seal is a cultural phenomenon, and its survival and development are closely related to the times. In the pre-Qin period, the ethical concept of ritual, music and faith dominated social life. The seal was once used as a keepsake and a symbol of personality, and it flourished several times. After the feudal system entered a mature stage of development, people's social behavior was strictly controlled by the feudal legal system. The self-sufficient agricultural economy suffocated the field of people's political and economic activities, and the seal as a tool of credit also declined.During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, with the development of the commodity economy and the formation of cities, some art forms were gradually commercialized, and the social demand for seals increased sharply. Under the background of combining with calligraphy and painting, they developed into an independent art category.

Chinese seal cutting art has a long history and rich ancient relics, which is a cultural wealth with strong national tradition. In order to make it easier for everyone to understand the art of seal cutting, the author tries to provide reference materials for everyone to get started from the perspective of understanding and appreciation.
