Chapter 1 foreword

The term "international student" was coined by the Japanese. As far back as 1300 years ago, the Japanese government sent "envoys to Tang Dynasty" to China many times in order to absorb China's advanced culture.Since the Tang envoys were diplomatic envoys, they could not stay in China for too long, so the Japanese government sent "overseas students" and "returning students" at the same time starting from the second dispatch of Tang envoys. "Returning students" returned to China when the envoys were sent back to China;Today's Kyoto in Japan has almost the same architectural style as Chang'an in the Tang Dynasty, and it also has the names of "Suzaku Avenue", "East Market" and "West Market", all of which are due to the "students studying abroad".China formally sent overseas students relatively late, but its contribution is very large. In a sense, it can be said that the history of the development of China’s overseas education is the history of changes in modern Chinese society.
