Chapter 53 Section 6 Shanghai Xujiahui Catholic Church
As early as the twenty-seventh year of Daoguang (AD 1847), the French Catholic missionary Luo Leisi (Italian) used the Qing government to lift the ban on Catholicism, and wanted to build a Catholic church in Xujiahui, Shanghai. When preparing to build, it was suspended due to the opposition of the local people.
The current Xujiahui Catholic Church was built in the 32nd year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1906 A.D.). It was named St. Ignatius Church at that time, and the local people used to call it Xujiahui Catholic Church.The church is now located on Shangcaoxi North Road, Shanghai.
The existing church building is Romanesque, with two bell towers at the front, both of which are more than 50 meters high, with a magnificent appearance.There are 19 altars in the church, which can accommodate 2,500 people at the same time. It is the largest Catholic church in Shanghai.
Xujiahui Catholic Church now receives a large number of believers every day, and foreign religious figures and tourists also often visit.
