The influence of topography on plant distribution has important biogeographical significance; vertical distribution is the reflection of horizontal zonal distribution of plants in the vertical direction. The research on these aspects in ancient my country is of great significance in theory and production. "Guanzi · Land Members" describes: All roads of grass and soil are made of grain, and whether they are high or low, each has grass. "" Ye Xia Yu ;Go down to Guan; go down to Pu; go down to Wei; go down to Xiao [huanhuan]; go down to Lou [loulou]; go down to Xiao [pingping]; go down to Xiao; go down to Xiao ;Every grass has twelve declines, and each has its own return.

Figure 10 Schematic diagram of the relationship between terrain height and plant distribution in "Guanzi·Diyuan Chapter"
(Quoted from Xia Weiying's Annotation of Guanzi Diyuan Chapter)
This passage shows that 12 kinds of plants, from aquatic to terrestrial, from low-lying to high-lying, according to the lotus - water chestnut - Guan - cattail - reed grass - small reed - Artemisia - broom vegetables - - Mugwort - Sedge - Motherwort - Imperata in sequence (Figure 10), forming a complete ecological sequence, which preliminarily reveals the law of plant distribution with terrain changes.

It is also recorded in "Land Members": Above the mountain, its destiny is called county spring; if the land is not dry, its grass is like thatch and scorpion [cuo rub], and its woody sweetheart [man樠]; ... above the mountain, its destiny is called (山下复) [fufu] 蒌, Its grass carp intestines and harvest, its wood is willow;...on the mountain, the life is called Quanying, its grass Qi, Baichang, its tree is poplar; [Xianxian] and Qiang, their trees are lindens; ...on the side of the mountain, their grasses [fufu] and lou, their trees are elms; ... This passage shows that different herbaceous and woody plants grow at different heights and slopes of the mountain.Revealed the vertical distribution law of mountain plants, and pointed out the difference between shady slope and sunny slope vegetation.Based on this narration, Mr. Xia Weiying drew a map of the distribution of vegetation in sequence according to the altitude of modern North China, which makes it clear at a glance.
