Chapter 18 Section VIII Recording and Collation

After the number of genealogy has grown to a certain scale, in order to facilitate the understanding, mastery and use of contemporary and future generations, family tree collectors need to process and organize the collected family trees, and record the various external and content characteristics of the family tree , cataloged for easy circulation and use by oneself and others. In the feudal era of China, the recording and sorting of genealogy did not form an independent genealogy catalog, but only as a category of historical books, which were described and reflected in the historical categories of various comprehensive catalogs and special historical department catalogs in the past dynasties. The difference is that due to the number of genealogy itself in different eras, the status of genealogy in the academic circles and society at that time, and the understanding of the importance of genealogy by catalogers, the position of genealogy in various eras and various catalogs is different. The positions are not exactly the same, some can be listed separately, while others can be attached to other categories.

In the earliest existing catalog of historical records "Hanshu Yiwenzhi" compiled on the basis of my country's first comprehensive catalog "Qilue", due to the small number of historical books, they cannot be listed separately and can only be attached to the Under the "Chunqiu Family" in the "Six Art Briefs" that included Confucian classics, the genealogy in the "Chunqiu Family" only included the "Fifteen Chapters of Shiben".During the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, the study of genealogy flourished and became a prominent study. Correspondingly, the classification of the catalog also changed accordingly. With the increase of history books and the improvement of the status of historiography, the history books were separately listed as four parts of a large category. Classifications began to appear. Unfortunately, more than a dozen national catalogs with four classifications compiled during this period have been lost, and it is impossible to know whether there is a special category of genealogy under the general category of history. It is known that the first one in the ancient catalog to set up a special category of genealogy and gather all genealogical documents together is the "Qilu" compiled by Ruan Xiaoxu in the Xiaoliang Dynasty of the Southern Dynasty. The category is "Pedigree Department", which contains 42 kinds of genealogical works and more than 1,000 volumes.Since then, all kinds of comprehensive catalogs generally have a special category of genealogy, which is particularly evident in the historical catalogs such as Jingjizhi and Yiwenzhi that exist in the official history of the past dynasties and national history.

Under the History Department of my country’s second catalog of historical records compiled at the beginning of the Tang Dynasty, "Sui Shu·Jing Ji Zhi", there is a "genealogy" category, which contains 41 genealogical books and 360 volumes. There are 53 volumes and 1280 volumes in total.Among the other four historical annals catalogs with the official history of Jingjizhi and Yiwenzhi, the "Genealogy" category of "Old Tang Book·Jingjizhi" included 55 volumes, 1691 volumes; 39 volumes, 1617 volumes, according to the annotations of this annals, there are still 22, 333 volumes are not recorded; "Song History Yiwenzhi" "Genealogy" category records 110 volumes, 437 volumes; "Ming History Yiwenzhi" "Genealogy" category contains 38 books Department, Vol. 504.In addition, in the official and private catalogs of the Song and Ming dynasties, such as Song Zheng Qiao's "General History·Yiwenlue", Ming Dynasty Jiao Hong's "Guoshi Jingjizhi", Zhu Mu (木絜) [jiejie] "Wanjuantang Bibliography", Gao Ru's "Baichuan Shuzhi", Qi Chengyu's "Danshengtang Bibliography", Chen Di's "Shishantang Bibliography", etc., also have "genealogy", "genealogy" and "surname genealogy" under the Department of History. " and other special categories. When the "Siku Quanshu" was revised in the Qing Dynasty, the editors said that "since the Tang Dynasty, the genealogy family has been completely extinct. The jade certificate is neither issued to the outside, nor is the family history superior to the official. It is just a vain, so it is deleted." ("Siku Quanshu Zongmu·Shibu Zongxu"), the category of genealogy was deleted from "Siku Quanshu Zongmu".The "Manuscripts of Qing History · Yiwenzhi" compiled at the beginning of the Republic of China imitated its example and did not set up a special category of genealogy, but attached this category under the category of "Ministry of History · Biography", but in fact it did not record genealogy books.Fortunately, the views of the ministers of the Siku do not represent the whole society’s understanding of the value of genealogy. Various private catalogs and specialist catalogs compiled in the Qing Dynasty, such as Huang Yuji’s "Qianqingtang Bibliography", Qian Zeng "Shu Gu Tang Bibliography", "Shu Min Qiu Ji", Xu Qianxue's "Chuan Shi Lou Bibliography", Wang Wenyuan's "Xiao Ci Tang Bibliography", Yao Jiheng's "Hao Gu Tang Bibliography", Wang Xian's "Zhenqi Tang Bibliography", Zhang Zhidong's "Bibliography Answers" "Question" and Zhang Xuecheng's "Historical Records", etc., also have special categories such as "genealogy" and "genealogy". It is especially worth mentioning that Xu Qianxue also divides genealogy into "genealogy" "Genealogy" and "Genealogy" are listed under the Department of History, while Zhang Xuecheng's "Historical Records" further subdivides the "Genealogy Department" into four categories: "Experts", "General Classes", "Chronicles" and "Biepu". category, which shows their understanding of the value of genealogy works.

In recent decades, with the deepening of people's understanding of the value of genealogical works, the recording and sorting of genealogical works has gradually been on the right track and reached a new stage. At the same time, some special genealogical catalogs have also appeared.Among the specialized genealogical catalogs that have appeared, they can be divided into the collection genealogical catalog reflecting a collection and the joint genealogical catalog reflecting the location of the collection. In addition, there is a genealogical abstract catalog with an abstract. These different types of catalog forms have played a positive role in people's further understanding, grasping and utilization of genealogy resources.

In the early 1980s, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science published "Research on Genealogy" by Japanese scholar Akigoro Taga. Taiwan) collected 9,800 volumes, a total of 12,697 volumes. The disadvantage is that this includes a considerable number of repeated collections, and the actual number is far less than that. In 1984, Taiwan Chengwen Publishing House published the American Genealogical Society Catalog of Chinese Genealogy compiled by Americans. This is a catalog of collections, including a total of 2,811 Chinese genealogies collected by the Utah Genealogical Society, and 298 addenda. Part 3109. In 1987, the "Taiwan Region Genealogy Catalog" issued by the Taiwan Province Research Association for the Historical Origin and Development of Surnames included more than 10,600 genealogies of various types in the Taiwan region, becoming the top of the list for a while.

In 1983, the History Department of Nankai University conducted a preliminary survey on the collection of genealogy in public libraries and university libraries in Beijing. The library of the Institute decided to expand the scope of the survey and jointly compile a large-scale reference book "Comprehensive Catalog of Chinese Genealogy" that can reflect the collection of Chinese genealogy at home and abroad. After years of hard work, this catalog has been compiled and will be published by Zhonghua Book Company in the near future. This large-scale genealogy catalog includes more than 400 libraries, cultural centers, cultural management committees, museums, memorial halls, archives, cultural relics stores and other units in mainland China, as well as overseas public and private collections compiled before 1949 in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao There are 14,761 kinds of genealogical data. The main text of the whole book is concentrated according to the surnames of the genealogy masters, and arranged in the order of strokes. The genealogy of the same surname is arranged according to the place of residence of each family. The time of publication, edition, number of volumes, book collection units, etc. are attached to the book with two appendices, "Regional Index" and "List of Units Submitted for Catalog", which are very convenient for readers to use.Although this catalog does not have and cannot include all the existing family trees, it is still the largest, most authoritative, and most convenient joint genealogy catalog in my country today.

Since the mid-1980s, the Beijing Library, which has the largest collection of family trees in my country, has also cleaned up and cataloged the collection of family trees, and on this basis, organized manpower to write summaries for more than 3,000 kinds of family trees in the library. With the completion of the "Summary of Family Tree Collection in Beijing Library", Beijing Library will provide readers with a new level of search service for collection genealogy. In the past 20 years, in the collation of genealogy, in addition to compiling various special catalogs, people have selectively reprinted some high-value and complete genealogical materials for use by all walks of life.As early as the early 1980s, Taiwan's New Far East Publishing House published dozens of new and old genealogies, and some other publishing houses did similar things. In 1995, the Shanxi Provincial Academy of Social Sciences Genealogy Data Research Center and the Chinese Genealogy Society decided to jointly compile "Chinese Genealogy Integration" with many domestic units on the basis of more than ten years of collecting and sorting out old genealogies. This set of books will be published by Bashu The bookstore publishes photocopies in three batches. The first batch of 100 volumes published at the end of 1995 mainly selected complete and valuable genealogies with certain representative and edition values of Zhang, Wang, Li, Liu, and Chen and their minor surnames, and processed them as necessary. Each surname spectrum is prefaced with a small order to introduce and explain, so as to facilitate readers to use.

In addition, the Rural Society Research Center of Zhejiang Provincial Society of Local Chronicles, while sorting out old local chronicles and guiding the compilation of new local chronicles, also attaches great importance to the collection and sorting of old genealogies. At present, they have basically carried out computer information processing on more than 5,000 kinds of old family trees existing in Zhejiang Province, and built an information database of old family trees in Zhejiang, from which readers can conveniently and quickly retrieve the names and volumes of old family trees in Zhejiang. , Several revisions, Spectrum Composer, Compilation Time, Publisher, Publication Time, Edition, Collector, Collection Location and other information. And on this basis, some old family trees with high value and complete length were selected and compiled into "Zhejiang Family Tree (Old) Collection", which was published in the form of transcription. At present, "Yimen Zheng's Genealogy" and "Wu's Genealogy" have been compared, transcribed and printed for social use.
