Chapter 29 Chapter 14 Indonesian Overseas Chinese

The native overseas Chinese in Indonesia are called "Per-anakan" (Per-anakan), which originally meant native people, and later became a proper term, referring specifically to native overseas Chinese.Men are called "Baba" (Baba), and women are called Nyonya (Nyonya) and Nona (Nona is unmarried). The characteristics of native overseas Chinese are: men marry aboriginal women as wives, or intermarry among native overseas Chinese. Nona generally does not marry aboriginals but marry "new guest" immigrants. Therefore, any native overseas Chinese has matrilineal origin. Resident blood, and has a history of living abroad for more than three generations; generally do not know or speak a little Chinese or Chinese dialects, and communicate with their mothers in daily life to speak local dialects, such as Sundanese (West Java), Javanese (East and Central Java); although They inherited some Chinese cultural customs and codes of conduct from their parents, but due to the influence of the matrilineal side, the cultural customs and codes of conduct are closer to the original residents. In short, native-born overseas Chinese are the crystallization of intermarriage between China and Indonesia, as well as the product of cultural exchanges between the two countries.

The Chinese arrived in Indonesia earlier. Overseas Chinese settled there during the Tang and Song dynasties. During the Ming Dynasty, overseas Chinese villages were formed in the coastal areas of northern Java and southern Sumatra.According to reports, only one Chinese woman came to Indonesia until the end of the 17th century, and her arrival caused a sensation. It is conceivable that before this, it was very common for overseas Chinese to marry local women and have children. It can be seen that native overseas Chinese have already appeared. In the 16th century, the Chinese immigrated to Indonesia in large numbers, reaching a peak in the mid-19th and early 20th centuries. On the one hand, "new customers" came in a steady stream, and the population of overseas Chinese increased sharply. On the other hand, the phenomenon of interracial marriage became more and more common. To become a member of it, "Isolate the sound teaching, speak language, wear clothes, read fan books... follow Islam, do not eat pigs and dogs, and its system is no different from Java." (Wang Dahai: "Sea Island Yizhi")
