If the poems with five characters and four sentences and seven characters and four sentences are called quatrains, then this genre has existed for a long time, but before the Tang Dynasty, there were no metrical requirements such as rhyme and equality. After the Tang Dynasty, there were very strict requirements for quatrains, but when we read Tang poetry, we will find many quatrains that are not legal. These quatrains that do not conform to the law are by no means those poets who do not understand the meter, because many of them appear in the poems of Li Bai, Du Fu, Wang Wei, Bai Juyi and other great poets, but they are intentional. There are quite a few of this kind of poems in Tang poetry, and they have also been recognized by later generations. For example, Tang poetry anthologies of later generations, such as "Tang Poetry Bie Cai" by Shen Deqian of the Qing Dynasty, all select these poems into the category of quatrains.

These quatrains that do not conform to the poetic rhythm of the Tang Dynasty are called "variant poems" by some, and "ancient quatrains" by others. To sum up, there are mainly two situations. First, it does not fully follow the level requirements. For example, Li Bai's "Quiet Night Thoughts":
The second sentence should be "Ze Zhe Zhe Ping Ping", but the fifth character "Shang" should be flat and Zhe.The third sentence should be sticky, it should be "Ze-Ze-Ping-Ze", but now it is "Ze-Ping-Ze-Ping", completely lost the stickiness. The fourth sentence should be correct. If the current third sentence is used, it should be "Ze Ze Zhe Ping Ping", but now it is "Ping Ping Ping Ping Ping", which is completely wrong.

Second, the quatrains of the Tang Dynasty require that they must rhyme with flat tones, while some of them tend to rhyme with flat tones, such as:
Both poems are all rhyme. Both of these situations are known as "ancient jue".
