Chapter 50 Jia Island

As I said in the staging of Tang poems earlier, the era of Jia Dao and Yao He has not been determined, either in the middle Tang Dynasty or in the late Tang Dynasty. In fact, not only Jia Dao and Yao He, but also the era of Du Mu and Li Shangyin have not yet been determined. The reason why Jia Dao is introduced here is firstly because his poetic style belongs to the school of Han and Meng, and secondly because of his half-teacher and half-friend relationship with Han Yu. Jia Dao is as famous as Meng Jiao as a "painstaking poet", but his life is more difficult than Meng Jiao's, and he is also more bitter than Meng Jiao in chanting and seeking sentences.

Jia Dao (779-843), style name Lang (lang) fairy.Fan Yang (near Beijing today). In his early years, he became a monk with a name of no title. Later, he went to the capital, followed Han Yu's advice, returned to the secular world, and took the Jinshi examination. His acquaintance with Han Yu was somewhat dramatic. He wrote a poem called "Ti Li Ning's Secluded Residence", in which there are two sentences "the bird rests in the tree by the pond, and the monk pushes the moon to go down the door". He felt that the word "tui" was not satisfactory and wanted to change it to the word "knock". , and couldn't make up his mind for a while, so he rode on the donkey, doing "push" and "knock" repeatedly, not wanting to bump into Jing Zhaoyin and Han Yu's sedan chair. After Han Yu asked about the situation, instead of blaming him, he thought about it and compared it with him, and finally decided that the word "knock" is better. This is the origin of the word "scrutiny" later.

Jia Dao is also a poet of painstaking effort. When he writes poems, he weighs every word carefully and completely immerses himself in it.In addition to Han Yu, he was also obsessed with searching for poems, and ran into Da Jingzhao Liu Qichu. That was when he was in Chang'an, just when the autumn wind was bleak and the fallen leaves could be swept away, so he casually recited the poem "Falling leaves are full of Chang'an". , and finally thought of the phrase "the autumn wind blows the Weishui", I was overjoyed, and unexpectedly bumped into Liu Qichu.Liu Qichu was not as generous as Han Yu, so Jia Dao was arrested and locked up overnight before being released.

Although Jia Dao followed Han Yu's advice and returned to the secular life, he also took the imperial examination, but he was frustrated.Wang Jian, who was at the same time as him, wrote in a poem "Jia Island" that he "recited poems all day long and endured hunger, and he looked like a king among ten thousand people", which shows the embarrassment of his life. The realm of his poems is not as good as that of Meng Jiao, but the spirit of chanting is far superior. He has two poems, "Walking alone at the bottom of the pool, counting breaths by the trees." After the poem, there is a small note that says: "Two lines were obtained in three years, and tears flowed when I recited them. .” You can imagine his painstaking efforts in writing poems.

It is precisely because of this that although Jia Dao's poems have strange ideas, cold artistic conception, and thin and hard words, there are still many good poems that have been handed down to future generations.Such as "Seekers Who Don't Meet":
and also:
There is also the widely recited "Du Sanggan":
Jia Dao was not very famous at the time, but in the late Tang Dynasty, especially after the Song Dynasty, he became famous and had a great influence. In the late Tang Dynasty, Li Dong "admired Jia Changjiang very much, so he wrote the island statue in bronze and wore it in a scarf. He often held a number of beads and recited Jiadao Buddha a thousand times a day. If anyone has a happy island, Dong must record the island poems and give it to him. , exhorted again and said four times: 'This is no different from the Buddhist scriptures, so burn incense and worship them.'" (Sun Guangxian's "Northern Dream Suoyan") Another example is Sun Sheng in the Southern Tang Dynasty, who also painted a portrait of Jia Dao and hung it on the wall, worshiping day and night.Song Yanyu's "Canglang Poetry Talk" said: "In modern times, Zhao Zizhi and Weng Lingshu are the only ones who like the poems of Jia Dao and Yao He. After a little recovery, they will feel the style of poverty. Poets in the rivers and lakes often imitate their styles, and they call themselves 'Tang Zong' for a while." Influence. So far, until modern times.
