Chapter 83 Five Palaces and Four Tune

Tang and Song Yanle used twenty-eight tones. As far as Yuan Zaju, there are only nine palace tunes actually used, namely the so-called "five palaces and four tunes" (in the Yuan Dynasty, the palace tunes were called "Gong", and other tunes were collectively called "tune"). They are (the brackets are relative Yuan Dynasty Yale Palace Tune): Xianlu Palace (Yize Palace) Zhonglu Palace (Jiazhong Guan) Nanlu Palace (Linzhong Palace) Huangzhong Palace (Wushe Palace) Zhenggong (Huang Zhongguan) Dashi Tune (Huang Zhongshang) Double Tune (Jia Zhongshang) Shang Diao (Yi Ze Shang) Yue Diao (No She Shang)

Yuan Zaju actually only uses two modes: Gong mode (1 mode) and Shang mode (2 mode). The five palaces and four tunes are roughly equivalent to today's tunes as follows: Zhenggong—the 1st mode of D key Zhonglu Palace——the 1st mode of F key Nanlu Palace - the 1st mode of A key Xianlu Palace - the 1st mode of bB key Huang Zhonggong - 2 modes of C key Dashi Tune——2 Tune Mode of D Tune Double tone - the 2 tone of the F key Quotient tune - 2 mode of bB scale Yue Tune - 2 Tune Mode of C Key
