Chapter 5 The second part clarifies the original vision

I have tried to represent as faithfully as possible my work for Alain Resnais. Let the reader not be surprised that the picture designed by Alain Resnais has not been faithfully portrayed in this work. My job is to confine myself to elaborating those elements from which Resnais directed the film. Those passages about Nevers that were not part of the original script (July 58) were annotated before the film was shot in France (December 58).So, that's script-independent work (see Appendix: Quiet Night Interpretation). I think it is necessary to retain some of the things that were discarded in the film, and they can effectively clarify the original vision.

I entrusted this work to the publishing house, and unfortunately we were not able to use us - Resnais and I on the one hand, Gérard Jarlot and I on the other, and Resnais, Jarlot and I. The three of me—almost every day—analyzed the script's conversations to flesh it out. I have never been able to live without their advice, and whenever I finish writing a plot, I always ask them to look it over, and get their stern but clear, well-informed criticism before I move on to another plot.
