Chapter 5 CHAPTER 5 DEEP INTO THE KNOWN

Meditation: The Art of Ecstasy 奥修 9091Words 2018-03-20
I don't believe in a fixed approach.I use some methods just to push you into a very confused consciousness, because the way you are, the first thing that will be done to you is to disrupt your whole pattern. You have become very fixed, very rigid; you have to become more and more liquid, more and more fluid.Unless you become flowing like a river, you will never know the Divinity -- because it is not a thing, it is an event. You cannot seek that divinity, it cannot be sought, because you can only seek what you already know.To seek is to seek, and you cannot seek the unknown. You don't know what it is, so how do you seek it?Only after you have tasted it, known it, even just glimpsed it, will you feel the urgency to seek it.So that divinity cannot be sought. But when I say that divinity cannot be sought, it does not mean that it cannot be found. It cannot be sought, but it can be found.

The more you seek it, the less likely you are to find it.You seek and you never find, because that very seeking becomes an obstacle. So, don't seek what you don't know, but go deep into what you already know.Don't long for the unknown, go deep into the known. When you go deep into the known, you will stumble upon the doors that lead to the unknown, because the known is really the door to the unknown. So, go deeper. For example: You cannot seek that divinity, but if you have loved, then you know love.So go deep into love. When you go deep into love, somewhere there is no love and being loved, and that divinity is there.

So instead of seeking that divinity, go into that which is real, known, and near to you.Don't look for the near, but start from the near.We are so anxious to go far that we never take the first step that can be taken close by.We ask for the last step first, but you cannot take the last step in the first place. The first step must be to take the first step, the first step is here and now, but our concern is then and there. To seek means to seek in time, and to seek is a delay, a great delay, because seeking is always in the future, it can never be in the present. How can you seek here and now?no space. You can be in the here and now, but you cannot seek. So, it is the mind itself that seeks that creates time, because time is needed, only then can you seek.

That's why those who seek moksha, freedom, absolute freedom have to create the idea of transmigration.More time is needed, one life is not enough, many lives are needed.Only then, in this endless time, in the space created by time, can you move.If you want to find the Absolute, one moment is not enough; certainly not one lifetime. ①Moksha (moksa): Liberation. —— Annotation Time is actually a by-product of desiring. The more you desire, the more time you need. There are two ways to handle it.One is to imagine life after death, life after life, time never ending at all. This is a method, the Oriental method, to create more space for desire. The other is the Western method: to strengthen the concept of time and do more things in a given time.People only have one life, there is no future life, and this life is everything, so you have to do a lot of things, and you have to incorporate so many desires into a given time. This is why Westerners have such a strong sense of time.Time awareness is really one of the most pervasive aspects of the Western mind.

But no matter the East or the West, as long as you have desire, you have created time.Time is the fourth dimension of space, it is a kind of space.Without time, your desire cannot act, so any desire must create time and future, and in this way, you can delay the present moment. The present moment is not actually time, but presence. So it is better to go deep into what is known to you, into what is your life.Go deep into it, whatever it may be, go deep.Don't float on the surface, go down to its deepest bottom. And once you start going deep, falling deep, you come to a different level. This is not going into the future, this is going into the present (prec sent), into the here and now.

For example, you are listening to me.You can just superficially listen, and then, just use your ears. This is the first level of listening. You can say, "Of course I am listening." But only the ears are listening, only the mechanism of the body is listening, your mind may be somewhere else. But if you can go deep, you can listen very attentively and the mind is engaged, then you can go deeper into the moment. But even if your mind is engaged, your being may not be engaged. If you are thinking about what I said, then the mind is involved, but there are deeper depths, your being may not be here at all, and there may be undercurrents of the unconscious, and because of these undercurrents you cannot be here. You can go deeper, that means, you can go into it with your whole being. Then you are just empty and don't even think about it.Your body is here, your mind is here, your being is here, all in one spot, so you go deep.

So whatever you are doing right now, go deep. The deeper you go, the closer you come to the unknown. The unknown is not the opposite of the known, it is what is hidden in the known, and the known is only a veil. Don't go into the future, don't seek.As long as it is here, exists. In seeking you will radiate yourself; but in being you are intense, and that intensity, that total intensity in this moment, will bring you to a certain crystallization. In that complete, intense moment, you are. That being, the happening of that being becomes a door. You have found it without seeking it, you can have it without even seeking it.

So I say: don't seek it, it will be found. All the means and methods I use are nothing more than to make you stronger in the here and now, to help you forget the past and the future.Any movement of body and mind can be used as a springboard: the point is that you jump into the here and now. Even dancing can be used, but at that time there is only dancing, there are no dancers. The dance is ruined as soon as the dancers enter. As soon as the seeker enters, the time setting enters. Now the movement is split, the dance becomes a superficial thing, and you are far away. When you dance, then become a dance, don't be a dancer. The moment comes when you are just moving, when there is no division. This undivided consciousness is meditation.

You can use anything. If you are eating, eating can also be a meditation -- if there are no eaters there. If you are walking, walking can also be a meditation -- if there is no one walking. If you are in love, then being in love can also be a deep meditation -- if there is no loving person there.Love with a lover is poisonous, but love without a lover becomes divine, and something unknown suddenly manifests itself. We are divided, and then we act.The actors are there, that's the problem. Why do actors exist? He exists because of desires, expectations, memories of the past, and visions of the future. There is an actor who is the accumulation of the whole past and the whole imagined future. The actor just misses one thing: this moment, the present moment. And in this moment everything is there, everything that was and everything that will be.It is this moment that is wasted, and this moment is life.Everything else is just past actions or future dreams—it is nothing but dreams.

You have a very huge, very marvelous accumulation, but it is dead. The doer is the dead point in you.It has many decorations from the past and many visions of the future, it looks regal, but it is dead. And the present moment, this moment is just a bare atom as small as a thing, very poor. The poverty here means that it has no past accumulation and future assumptions. It is just a naked moment of being. It looks poor, but it is the only life possible. It is alive! And to be alive and poor is the only richness, and to be dead and rich is the only poverty. That's why it always happens that a beggar as poor as a Buddha or a Christ becomes the richest that can exist, and a Midas is the poorest that ever came.

In meditation only what comes naturally helps, fake methods are of no use. That's why people keep insisting on living teachers, that books are doomed to lie, they cannot change you, they cannot touch you, they cannot move you.Dogma cannot be alive, dogma is doomed to be dead, so the Orientals have always insisted on having a mentor and a master. The purpose of this insistence is: only the master can be fluid, he can change anything. With him, even methods can become methodless, and with scriptures and traditions, even methodless methods can become methods.Because once something is written, it becomes dead. The whole thing is said and it becomes dead.A master is needed in order to constantly mess up his own past assertions so that no "fixation" can appear anywhere. There must be a fluidity of phenomena, only then will there be natural happening. In my opinion, a group of people who are meditating is a group of people who are doing something in the present moment, not people who are seeking something. And what is being done right now may be trivial.A bystander, an outsider may not know what he is doing, he may even think that these meditators are crazy. They may be jumping, screaming, crying, laughing, they can do anything. They might just sit quietly, or they might make crazy noises, but whatever they do, they're just doing, not doing. In fact, they're just letting it happen, instead of doing it, they're just opening up to it. This is difficult in the beginning. You don't want anything to happen without you, because you want to be the master.Nothing should happen without your ownership and control. So it was difficult in the beginning. But slowly, as your controlling mind dies, you feel more and more free, and once you let go of control, the freshness comes and the more you can laugh. Then at a certain point you start to feel that the mind is the destructive thing in you, that the master -- the possessor, the controller -- is your bondage. ①Medas (Medas): In Greek mythology, the king of Phrygia who obtained the golden touch. —— Annotation You cannot become aware of this by observing others, but you can gradually feel it.Then, in a sudden explosion, there is no "you": the actor disappears, only action remains. With that comes freedom, with that comes awareness, with that comes you are fully awakened.Or, right now you are just aware. This is what I call meditation, not seeking, not seeking something, but just going deep within, into the present. For this, anything can be used, and nothing is just as good.If you understand this, then anything can be used as an object for meditation, or as a meditation. That's why I tell you to do Dynamic Meditation and to live in deep silence, in the happening. In Hatha Yoga there is an exercise in which a person first tenses up every muscle in the body and then releases the tension and becomes relaxed. Is this similar to what happens in Dynamic Meditation? ① Hatha Yoga (Hathayoga): Indian philosophy as a faction.Emphasizes spiritual perfection through control of the body. ——Editor's note Relaxation is basically existential.Existentially, if your attitude towards life is tense, it is impossible for you to relax. That way, even if you try to relax, it's impossible. In fact, it's absurd to try to relax.Effort and relaxation are antagonistic. You cannot relax, you can only be relaxed. Your presence is hostile to relaxation.Relaxation means you are absent, and you can be absent without your trying.Efforts of any kind only strengthen your presence, it necessarily strengthens it.Whatever you do is your action, you will be strengthened by it, you will be more concentrated by it, you will be more crystallized. In this sense, you cannot relax.Relaxation comes to you only when you are not there. What you do becomes part of your ego, and that effort you make is a continuation of yourself. When you are gone, you are relaxed in this moment.Your very being is tension; without tension you cannot exist -- you are tension. Tension begins with wanting what is not there. There is a tension between the past and the future. You are like a bridge between two things, and whenever these two things connect, there is tension.Man is a bridge, a bridge of desire; but it is a rainbow bridge, not a steel bridge; it can evaporate. When I say relaxation is existential, I mean: know tension, don't do anything with it, just know it. You can understand tension, but you cannot understand relaxation; it is impossible to understand relaxation. You can only understand tension, so you understand how it is, where it comes from, how it exists, and what it depends on.To understand tension thoroughly.Once you know it thoroughly, moments without tension arise. Then not only the body is relaxed, but the whole being is also relaxed. It is not too difficult to relax the body, but as civilization progresses it becomes more difficult because the connection with the body is lost.We do not exist in the body, our existence has basically become mental and psychological. You don't even love with your body, you love with your mind; the body follows you like a dead thing, and when you touch a person you are not touching the body, the sensitivity is gone.Minds are touching, but because minds cannot really touch, although two bodies are touching, there is no communication. The body is dead, so you can hug, but it is just two corpses hugging. They are close, but not really close.Intimacy exists only when you are in the body, when you are in the body. We are all outside our bodies, just like ghosts, going around and never going in.The more a man becomes civilized, the less he has a connection with his body. The connection is lost. That's why the body is tense. The body has its own automatic relaxation mechanism. When the body is tired, it lies on the bed, but because you are not there, the body cannot relax. You have to be in the body, otherwise the automatic mechanism becomes ineffective. It cannot function without your presence. It needs you, it cannot go to sleep alone.Sleep is lost, relaxation is lost.Because contact with the body is lost. You are not in your body, so your body cannot function competently, the body cannot function with its own intelligence. The body has an innate intelligence that has been inherited for thousands of years, but because you are not in it, there is tension.Otherwise, the biological body is basically automatic, it works automatically. It works wherever you are, in your presence. Our minds are also full of tension. It doesn't have to be; because you've been creating chaos, the mind is tense. For example, if one thinks about sex, one is creating confusion, because sex is something that need not be thought about. The mind center is not for imaginativeness.Sex has its own center, and you let the mind do what the sex center does.Even when there is love, you think about it instead of feeling it, that feeling center is not working. The more civilized a man is, the more burdened the intellect centers are; the other centers are not working, are not functioning. This also creates a tension, because a center that is supposed to be working and has a certain working energy available to it is set aside with nothing to do, so it creates its own tension, its own unused energy that makes it become overwhelming. The mind center is overloaded with work.It is used to feel, which it cannot do.The mind cannot feel, it can only think. The categories of thought are very different from the categories of feeling, not only different but diametrically opposed. The logic of the heart is not the logic of the head. Love has its own way of thinking, but it is not a mental way, so the mind has to take on what it is not supposed to do.It becomes overloaded and thus there is tension. The situation is somewhat like this: the father is doing the child's work, and the child has the father's work. This is a confusion produced by mental existence. If each center does its own thing, then there is relaxation. The mind is not the only center.Because we make it the only center, we destroy the whole stillness, the whole attitude of relaxation, the whole harmony of man with the universe. The mind has to work, it has its function, but it is very limited, it is overburdened.Your whole education involves only one center. You are educated as if you have only one center: the mind, the mathematical mind, the rational mind. Life is not just rational; on the contrary, much of life is irrational.Reason is like a small lighted island in this vast, dark, mysterious sea of irrationality. The roots of the island are in the mysterious ocean—the mysterious great sea. The lit part is just a part, it is not the whole and cannot be considered as the whole without causing tension.Mystery will take revenge, and irrationality will take revenge. You can see these consequences in the West. The West has overused one center—the center of reason, and now the irrational is taking revenge. The vengeance has come, and it has thrown the whole order into chaos—the anarchy, the unbridled, the rebellious, the illogical is exploding. It could be in music, painting, or anything.Irrationality is taking revenge, and the existing order is being replaced by irrationality. Rationality is not everything. If it is enshrined as a whole, the whole culture will be tense, and the laws that apply to the individual also apply to the entire culture, the entire society. These laws must be understood. And this understanding will cause a change in you: this understanding will become a transformation. The body becomes tense because you are not in the body; the mind becomes tense because you overload it.But your spiritual being is never tense.I divide you into body, mind and spirit only as a method. You are not divided, in fact, these divisions do not exist; but in order to help you understand some things, it is useful to be divided. The spiritual realm is never tense, but you are not in touch with it.A person who does not even touch his own body cannot touch spirituality, because spirituality is a deeper realm. If you do not even touch the outer border, you cannot touch the inner center. The third realm, the realm of spirituality, is relaxation, even in this moment it is relaxation. In fact, it would be more accurate to say that the realm of spirituality is the realm of relaxation. There is no tension, because in the third realm there cannot be a cause for tension. You cannot exist without the second realm. You can forget it, but you cannot be without it, because you are it; it is your being, it is pure being. You are not aware of your spirit because there is so much tension in your body and mind.If you are free from tension both physically and mentally, you will automatically know spiritual joy and spiritual relaxation. It will come to you, it has been waiting for you.But your attention is so absorbed in physical and mental things that there is no room for spiritual attention.Only when the body and the mind are not tense can you explore spirituality, you can know spiritual bliss.Spirituality is never tense, it cannot be tense. There is no spiritual tension, only physical tension, mental tension. Body tension is created by those who preach anti-body attitudes in the name of religion. In the West, Christianity is particularly hostile to the body.A gap, a false split, is created between you and your body so that your whole attitude becomes a tension-maker.You cannot eat relaxed, you cannot sleep relaxed, every body movement becomes a tension. The body is the enemy, but you cannot live without it.You have to go on with it, you have to live with the enemy, so the tension is always there, you can never relax. The body is not your enemy, nor is it unkind to you in the slightest, nor is it even indifferent to you.Just having your physical presence is a joy in itself. And once you accept it as a gift, a divine gift, you return to the body. You will love it, you will feel it - the way the body feels is subtle. If you have not felt your own body, you cannot feel another person's body.If you don't love your own body, you cannot love another's body. This is impossible. If you don't care about your body, you can't care about other people's bodies, and no one cares! You can say you care, but I dare say no one cares.Even if you seem to care, you really don't.You care only for other reasons - for other people's opinions, for other people's eyes. You never cared about your body for yourself. You don't love your body.If you don't love it, you cannot be in it. Love your body, and you'll feel more relaxed than ever.To love is to relax. When there is love there is relaxation: If you love someone, if there is love between you and him or her, then, with love comes relaxation music. So there is relaxation. You can relax with someone, that's the only sign of love.If you cannot relax with someone, then you are not in love. The other person, the enemy, was always there. That's why Sartre said: "Others are hell." For Sartre, hell is here, it must be.When there is no love flowing between two people, the other is hell. When there is love flowing between two people, the other is heaven. Therefore, whether others are heaven or hell depends on whether there is love flowing between them. ① Sa will (Jean-Paul Sartre, 1905 ~ 1980): French philosopher, novelist, playwright. The founder of French existentialism. —— Annotation Whenever you are in love, a tranquility comes.Language disappears, words become meaningless. You have so much to say and yet nothing to say at the same time. That silence will envelop you; in that silence love blossoms. You are relaxed. In love there is no future and no past. There is a past only after love is dead. You just remember a dead love; a living love never needs to be remembered because it is alive and there is no gap to remember it, no space to remember it.Love is in the present moment, there is no future and no past. If you love someone, you don't have to pretend. Then, you can be what you are.You can take off your mask and relax yourself. When you have no love you have to put on a mask, you are tense all the time because there is that other person there, you have to pretend, you have to be on the defensive. You have to either attack or defend: it is a struggle, a battle, and you cannot be relaxed. The joy of love is more or less relaxing music, you feel relaxed, you can be who you are, in the sense that you can be naked the way you are.You don't have to worry about yourself, you don't have to pretend. You can be open, vulnerable, and in that openness you are relaxed. The same phenomenon happens if you love your body. You become relaxed and you care about your body. There is nothing wrong with that, loving your body is not the same as being narcissistic. In fact, this is the first step towards spirituality. That's why Dynamic Meditation begins with the body.Through powerful breathing, the mind expands, consciousness expands; the whole body becomes a vibrating living being.Jumping will be easier now.Now that you can take the leap, thinking won't be too much of an obstacle. You are a child again: jumping, quivering, alive. That conditioning, that psychological conditioning, is gone. Your body is not conditioned like your mind.Remember this: your mind is conditioned, but your body is still a part of nature. All religions and religious thinkers - basically the thinking type - are against the body, because with the body, with the senses, the mind and its conditioning disappear. That's why they are all afraid of sex. With sex, the conditioned mind, disappears; again you become part of the big biosphere, the biosphere; you become one with it. The mind is always against sex, because sex is the only thing in ordinary life that can rise up against the mind. You have controlled the whole situation, only one thing remains out of control. So the mind is very against sex, because sex is the only remaining link between the body and you.If it is completely denied, then you are totally of the mind, you are no longer a body. The fear of sex is basically the fear of the body, because with sex the whole body becomes vibrating and alive and alive. As soon as sex takes over the body, the whole mind is pushed back, it disappears. The breath takes over it, the breath becomes powerful, alive. That's why my meditation starts with the breath. With the breath, you start to feel the whole body, every corner of the body. The body is filled and you become one with it.In this way, it is possible for you to jump. A leap in sex is a very small leap, but a leap in meditation is a big leap.In sex, you "jump" into the other person. Before that jump, you need to become one with your body; and in that jump, you need to expand further, into another person's body.Your consciousness spreads beyond your physical body.In meditation you jump out of your body into the whole of the universe, you become one with it. The second step in Dynamic Meditation is catharsis. Not only do you have to become one with the body, but you have to throw out all the tension that has built up in the body. The body must be light and unburdened, so that it can be energetic when exercising, and the more energetic the better. At this time, what is possible only in the dance of the ascetic, the dance of the Sufis can also happen. If your movements are powerful and dynamic, you will have moments of loss of control, and those moments are needed. You should no longer have control, because your control is the hindrance, "you" is the hindrance. Your control mechanism - the mind - is the obstacle. keep moving.Of course, "you" has to start, but then, you will be taken over, and you will feel the loss of control. You've reached the edge, now you can jump. Now, you have become a child again, you have returned, and all conditioning has been thrown away. You don't care about anything, what other people think. Now everything that society has added to you has been thrown away, and you have become a dancing particle in the universe. When you have dropped everything in the first stage of Dynamic Meditation, it is possible for you to enter the third stage.Your body is lost, your image is broken, because whatever you know yourself to be is not really you, but just a label. You hear people say that you are like that, and you agree with it.But with the powerful movement, with the dance of the universe. All identification will disappear. For the first time you will return to who you must be from birth. With this new birth, you will become a new person.
