先是，大贼首谢志珊、萧贵模等，皆以横水居众险之中，倚以为固。闻官兵四进，仓卒分众扼险，出御甚力。至是，见横水烟焰障天，铳礁之声撼摇山谷，亦各失势，弃险走。各哨官兵乘之，皆奋勇力战而入。知府邢珣遂破磨刀坑巢，破荼坑巢，破荼潭巢；知县王天与破樟木坑巢，破石王巢；都指挥许清破鸡湖巢，破新溪巢，破杨梅巢；俱至横水。知府唐淳破羊牯脑巢，破上关巢，破下关巢，破左溪大巢；守备指挥郏文破狮寨巢，破义安巢，破苦竹坑巢；指挥余恩破长流坑巢，破牛角窟巢，破龟坑巢；县丞舒富破箬坑巢，破赤坑巢，破竹坝巢；知府季斅破上西峰巢，破狐狸坑巢，破铅厂巢；俱至左溪。守巡各官亦随后督兵而至。是日，擒斩首从贼人、贼级并俘获贼属男妇、夺回被虏人口、牛马、赃仗数多，其余自相蹂践，堕岸填谷而死者，不可胜计。当是时，贼路所由入，皆刊崖倒树，设阱埋签，不可行。我兵昼夜涉深涧，蹈丛棘；遇险绝，则挂绳崖树，鱼贯而上，猿臂而下，往往失足堕深谷。幸而不死，经数日始能出。各兵已至横水、左溪，皆困甚，不复能驱逐。会日已暮，遂令收兵屯扎。次日，大雾，雨，咫尺不辨；连数日不开。乃令各营休兵享士，而使乡导数十人分探溃贼所往，并未破巢穴动静。十五日，得各乡导报，谓诸贼分阵，预于各山绝险崖壁立有栅寨，为退保之计，有复合聚于未破之巢者，俱不意我兵骤入，未及搬运粮谷。若分兵四散追击，可以尽获。臣等窃计，湖、广夹攻在十一月初一，期已渐迫。此去桶冈尚百余里，山路险峻，三日始能达。若此中之贼围之不克，而移兵桶冈，势分备多，前后瞻顾，非计之得。乃今各营皆分兵为奇正二哨，一攻其前，一袭其后，冒雾速进，分投急击。十六日，知府邢珣攻破旱坑巢，窎井巢；知府季斅、守备指挥郏文攻破稳下巢，李家巢。十七日，知府唐淳攻破丝茅坝巢。十八日，都指挥许清攻破朱雀坑巢，村头坑巢，黄竹坳巢，观音山巢。十九日，指挥余恩攻破梅伏坑巢，石头坑巢。二十日，知府邢珣又攻破白封龙巢，芒背巢；知县王天与攻破黄泥坑巢，大富湾巢。二十二日，县丞舒富攻破白水洞巢；本日，知府伍文定、知县张戬兵亦至。二十四日，知府伍文定攻破寨下巢，知县张戬攻破杞州坑巢。二十五日，知县张戬又破朱坑巢，知府伍文定破杨家山巢。二十六日，知府季斅又破李坑巢，都指挥许清又破川坳巢。二十七日，守备指挥郏文又破长河洞巢。连日各擒斩首从贼人、贼级并俘获贼属男妇，夺回被虏人口、牛马、赃仗数多。 是日，各营官兵请乘胜进攻桶冈。臣复议得桶冈天险，四面青壁万仞，中盘百余里，连峰参天，深林绝谷，不睹日月。中所产旱谷、薯芋之类，足饷凶岁。往者亦尝夹攻，坐困数月，不能俘其一卒，竟以招抚为名而罢。及询访乡导，其所由入，惟锁匙龙、葫芦洞、荼坑、十八磊、新地五处，然皆架栈梯壑，夤悬绝壁而上。贼使数人于崖巅，坐发雷石，可无执兵而御我师。惟上章一路稍平，然深入湖广，迂回取道，半月始至。湖兵既从彼入，而我师复往，事皆非便。今横水、左溪余贼皆已奔入其中，同难合势，为守必力。善战者，其势险，其节短。今我欲乘全胜之锋，兼三日之程，长驱百余里而争利，彼若拒而不前，顿兵幽谷之底，所谓强弩之末，不能穿鲁缟矣。今若移屯近地，休兵养锐，振扬威声，先使人谕以祸福，彼必惧而请服。其或有不从者，乘其犹豫，袭而击之，乃可以逞。乃使素与贼通戴罪义官李正岩、医官刘福泰，释其罪，并纵所获桶冈贼钟景，于二十八日夜悬壁而入，期以初一日早，使人于锁匙龙受降。贼方甚恐，见三人至，皆喜，乃集众会议。而横水、左溪奔入之贼，果坚持不可，往复迟疑，不暇为备。臣遣县丞舒富率数百人屯锁匙龙，促使出降；而使知府邢珣入荼坑，知府伍文定入西山界，知府唐淳入十八磊，知县张戬入葫芦洞；皆于三十日乘夜，各至分地。遇大雨，不得进；初一日早，冒雨疾登。大贼首蓝天凤方就锁匙龙聚议，闻各兵已入险，皆惊愕散乱，犹驱其众男妇千余人，据内隘绝壁，隔水为阵以拒。知府邢珣之兵渡水前击，张戬之兵冲行其右，伍文定之兵自张戬右悬崖而下，遶贼傍击。贼不能支，且战且却。及午，雨霁；各兵鼓奋而前，乃败走。县丞舒富、知县王天与所领兵，闻前山兵已入，亦从锁匙龙并登。各军乘胜擒斩，贼悉奔十八磊。知府唐淳之兵复严阵迎贼，又败。然会日晚，犹扼险相持。次早，诸军复合势并击，大战良久，遂大败。知府邢珣破桶冈大巢，破梅伏巢，破鸟池巢；知县张戬破西山界巢、锁匙龙巢，破黄竹坑巢；知府唐淳破十八磊巢；知府伍文定破铁木里巢，破土池巢，破葫芦洞巢；知县王天与破员分巢，破背水坑巢；县丞舒富破太王岭巢。擒斩首从贼人、贼级并俘获贼属男妇、夺回被虏人口、牛马、赃仗数多。贼大势虽败，结阵分遁者尚多。是日，闻湖广土兵将至，臣使知府邢珣屯葫芦洞，知府唐淳屯十八磊，知府伍文定屯大水，守备指挥郏文屯下新地，知县张戬屯砆头，县丞舒富屯荼坑，指挥姚玺。知县王天与屯板岭；而副使杨璋巡行砆头、荼坑诸营，监督进止，以继其粮饷。又使知府季斅分屯聂都，以防贼之南奔；都指挥许清留屯横水，指挥余恩留屯左溪，以备腹心遗漏之贼；而使参议黄宏留扎南安，给粮饷，以为聂都之继。臣亦躬率帐下屯茶寮，使各营分兵，与湖兵相会，夹剿遁贼。初五日，知府邢珣又破上新地巢，破中新地巢，破下新地巢。初七日，知府唐淳又破杉木坳巢，破原陂巢，破木里巢。十一日，知县张戬破板岭巢，破天台庵巢；十三日，又破东桃坑巢，破龙背巢。连日各擒斩俘获数多。其间岩谷溪壑之内，饥饿病疹颠仆死者，不可以数。于是，桶冈之贼略尽。臣以其暇，亲行相视形势，据险立隘，使卒数百，斩木栈崖，凿山开道。又使典史梁仪领卒数百，相视横水，创筑土城；周围千余丈，亦设隘以夺其险。议以其地请建县治，控制三省诸瑶，断其往来之路；事方经营。十六日，据防遏推官徐文英呈称，广东鱼黄等巢被湖兵攻破，贼党男妇千余，突往鸡湖、新地、稳下、朱雀坑等处。臣复遣知府季斅分兵趋朱雀坑等处，知府伍文定趋稳下、鸡湖等处，守备指挥郏文、知府邢珣趋上新等处，各相机急剿。二十日，知府伍文定兵，击贼于稳下寨、西峰寨、苦竹坑寨，长河坝巢、黎坑巢。二十三日，守备指挥郏文、知府邢珣击贼于上新地巢，知府伍文定又追击于鸡湖巢。十二月初三日，知府季斅击贼于朱雀坑寨、狐狸坑巢。擒斩首从贼徒、俘获贼属、夺获赃仗数多。于是奔遁之贼始尽。然以湖、广二省之兵方合，虽近境之贼悉以扫荡，而四远奔突之虞，难保必无。乃留兵二千余，分屯茶寮、横水等隘，而以是月初九日回军近县，以休息疲劳；候二省夹攻尽绝，然后班师。两月之间，通计捣过巢穴八十余处，擒斩大贼首谢志珊、蓝天凤等八十六名颗，从贼首级三千一百六十八名颗，俘获贼属二千三百三十六名口，夺回被虏男妇八十三名口，牛马骡六百八只匹，赃仗二千一百三十一件，金银一百一十三两八钱一分；总计首从贼徒
