Chapter 3 Preface to the 1974 Revised Edition

It has been 12 years since this textbook was published in 1962.Both analytic jurisprudence and the legal philosophy of value underwent significant developments during this period, and these views are included in the history section of this edition. The second part of the book, which is the core of the book - dealing with the nature and function of law - has been largely rewritten.Compared with the first edition, this edition gives more consideration to issues such as the psychological roots of law, the conceptual scope and substantive components of the concept of justice, and the criteria of legal validity. The third part of the book, the discussion of issues of legal method, has been less revised. This edition's more detailed analysis of the modes of legal reasoning replaces the original section on legal logic, thereby necessitating a necessary reassessment of the role of value judgments in the judicial process.

Throughout the revised edition, reference is also made to important works and treatises in jurisprudence since the 1962 edition.
