But Buddhism is also a religion, because it believes in supernatural powers (something supernatural and reliable), and it has organizations of believers.However, it was introduced into China and multiplied into various sects. Among them, the Southern Zen sect came from behind, and the situation has changed a lot.The most obvious and prominent sign is that it is allowed to scold the Buddha and the ancestors, which is not allowed in the teaching.So it will be like this, it is also a natural result.The source of this water is the belief that all sentient beings have Buddha nature, plus the self-nature of Southern Zen is pure.Since the self-nature is pure, the practice is very simple. It is nothing more than to understand the self-nature and recognize the original mind; if you can understand and recognize it, you will naturally become a Buddha (sudden enlightenment) immediately.In this way, the key is not outside, chanting Buddha and reading scriptures becomes secondary, even unnecessary, and can be relaxed.This is still a petty escapade.A small deviant goes down the river, and it will become a big deviant. I feel that chanting Buddha and reading scriptures will disturb the self-nature and the original mind. Shameless, reading the scriptures is just to cover your eyes.

This is exaggerated, because the way of the Buddha, he firmly believes that life is "suffering", suffering is due to "collection", and should be "extinguished" by the "Tao", which is always taught by the Buddha.In fact, even Deshan Xuanjian, who is famous for scolding the Buddha and the ancestors, also "studied the law canon carefully, and understood the meaning of all scriptures on nature and phase", and "lived in Liyang (Longtan Chongxin Office) for 30 years". (Volume 7 of "Five Lanterns Huiyuan") Be careful in words, expressing the spirit of Southern Zen's belief that one's own strength will surely overcome the sky, which is a step further than perseverance, and it is diligence with endless driving force.When we look through Zen classics, we can see that many believers and disciples have indeed done this way; and because of faith, they can indeed gain something. Doubtful.

Here we only talk about this kind of faith. From the standpoint of the Zen forest, it should be recognized that it is very useful, and the extreme is that it can change understanding and feelings by self-reliance.Because we believe in purity and love purity, defilements (which have an indissoluble bond with suffering) will be relatively reduced to the point of extinction.Defilements are reduced, and as for extinction, no matter whether it comes from Sudden or not, it is always good to say that it has been enlightened. If this is the case, then enlightenment or epiphany comes mainly from one's own mental power, and there is no mystery mixed in it.So far, we can even say that Southern Zen can be counted as having thrown away the shackles of religion, because it can neither be magical nor external.This is an important manifestation of the centralization of Buddhism. It seems that it only emphasizes conscience and ability, and there is no need to read "Jiedi Jiedi, Prajna Jiedi".

However, this trend has not been thorough, but has left a tail of belief in supernatural powers, such as talking about various supernatural powers.Judging from the belief of pointing directly at people's hearts and becoming a Buddha by seeing one's nature, all kinds of miracles from primitive religions are superfluous, and will even reduce the value of self-purity, so it is called a superfluity here.There is another kind of wart, which is conforming to the world, or in other words, not trying to get out of the world, but getting closer to the world.Those who study Buddhism are human beings and cannot leave the world, as discussed in the previous chapter.This is speaking from the heart, the ideal of Buddhism is to be born out of the world, even if you can't leave the world, you should "be far away from yourself".Some Zen masters, especially in the later period, do not seem to be like this, but have been infected by the secular atmosphere, and they are also proud of bestowing purple and being able to compose poems.This is to say that being a monk in body but not in mind may be worse than believing in magic.To put it lightly, it is also a kind of wart. For the sake of tolerance, it is better to remove it.The following examples illustrate this situation.Let me talk about the miraculous first.

12.2.1 Abnormal phases There are many manifestations of supernatural powers, starting from birth.This is of course also ancient.There are also many non-teaching ones. Emperors and generals who have read history books can be seen everywhere.Here we only talk about what is in the teaching, starting from Sakyamuni: "Magnify the light of wisdom, illuminate the world in ten directions, and golden lotus flowers will emerge from the ground, and you will naturally hold your feet." Inherited, but inherited, or in other words, did not despise and abandon it with the spirit of scolding the Buddha and the ancestors.Such as:

(1) Zen Master Huairang of Nanyue——was born on April 8th, the second year of Yifeng in the Tang Dynasty (Gaozong).Taishi saw and heard about Emperor Gaozong.The emperor asked: "He Xiangrui?" Taishi said to him: "The magic weapon of the country will not stain the glory of the world." (Volume 3 of "Five Lanterns Huiyuan") (2) Chen Zunsu of Muzhou—When he was born, the room was full of red light, and the sky was covered with auspicious clouds, and it would disperse within ten days.The eyes have double pupils, and the face is lined with seven stars. The shape is peculiar, and it stands out from the crowd.

(Ibid Book 8) (4) Yunju Lieyuan Zen Master——When he was born, candles were lit in the auspicious light, and his beard and claws were born. (Ibid Book 16) These performances cannot be justified by common sense.It is even more unreasonable to measure it with the theory of Southern Zen, because it emphasizes pre-determination, and it is incompatible with the view that all sentient beings have Buddha-nature, and that one can become a Buddha with a clear mind and see one's nature.

12.2.2 Various supernatural powers Learning Buddhism, Zen enlightenment, having a purpose, according to the original Four Noble Truths, is just the end of suffering.It has been said many times before that the only effective way to end suffering is to seek nothing (except for a very small number of things to maintain survival), that is, no more emotions, no more desires.Turning from delusion to enlightenment is to change from lustful to non-sensual through practice.This change, no matter the reason or process, is the inner strength of the heart, and has nothing to do with magic.That is to say, there is no need for any supernatural abilities other than cutting off lust.To speak of supernatural abilities is an unnecessary adornment accepted by religion.There are many types of decorations, some of which are listed below.Such as:

(1) The Sixth Patriarch Huineng Dajian Zen Master asked again: "Is there any difficulty in the future?" The master said: "Five or six years after my death, someone will come to take my head. Listen to my record and say: raise relatives on the head , The mouth needs to eat, and the willow will be the official when it is full of difficulties. It is also said: I have been there for seventy years, and two Bodhisattvas came from the east. One became a monk and the other stayed at home. "... dying suddenly.At that time, the room was full of strange fragrances, the white rainbow belonged to the earth, the trees turned white, and the animals wailed.In November, the bureaucrats and monks of the three counties of Guangshao and New counties competed to welcome the real body. They did not decide what to do, but burned incense and prayed: "Where the cigarette points, the master will return." At that time, the cigarette went straight through Caoxi, November 13th On the same day, he moved to the shrine and returned with the mantle he passed down. Then he took off his clothes and walked on the waves, as if walking on flat ground.Looking back, he said: "Come here! Come here!" The master said: "Hey! This is from the Han Dynasty. I knew that I should chop your shins." The monk sighed and said, "I can't match the true Mahayana magic weapon." (Ibid Book IV) (4) Chen Zunsu in Muzhou - the nest bandits entered the country, and the teacher marked the big grass at the gate of the city. The nest wanted to abandon it, but he couldn't lift it up with all his strength. He sighed and said, "there is a great sage in Muzhou." He left the city. (same as above) (5) Chan Master Weiyan of Yaoshan Mountain—the master climbed the mountain overnight, and suddenly the clouds opened to see the moon, and there was a loud roar.About ninety miles to the east of Liyang, the residents all call Dongjia. In the morning, they questioned each other until they arrived at Yaoshan. Cozy and wild, there is no gift or welcome all year round. Sometimes it goes straight to the top of a lonely peak, and the clouds scream under the moonlight. " (Ibid Book V) (6) Longhu Puwen Chan Master——to the outside of Shaowu City, he saw the lush and beautiful mountains, so he pulled the grass, and at the place where the smoke rose, there was an ascetic dwelling.Seeing the teacher arrives at the ascetic practice, he said: "The Venerable Master should be interested in this." He bowed and left.I have lived as a teacher for more than ten years.One day, an old man paid homage to him. The teacher asked where he lived and what he could ask for so far. The old man said, "Live on this mountain. However, it is not a human being, but the dragon is not responsible for raining, and the gods will punish him to death, and he is willing to rescue him! The master said: "You have offended God, how can I work hard?"Although, it can be easily shaped. "E lost where the old man was, and saw that there was a small snake next to him, extending into his sleeve. At dusk, thunder and lightning shook the mountain, and the wind and rain blew. The teacher was sitting in danger and did not lean. When it was sunny, he hung his sleeves, and the snake fell to the ground. After a while, the old man Worshiping and weeping, he said: "I'm not merciful, but this mountain is polluted by blood.How do you want to repay Sien? " That is to say, there is a spring under the cave rock, saying: "This spring will be set up for many people in the future. "Today's name is Longhu. (Ibid., Volume 6) (7) Zen Master Ruiyan Shiyan——One day, a village woman made a salute, and the master said: "Come back quickly, and save thousands of lives." When the woman went back to the house, she saw her son and wife picking up snails, so she let them go by the water's edge. (Ibid Book VII) (8) Chan Master Pujing Changjue——If there is a neighbor believer Zhang Sheng, please ask the master to make offerings.Zhang Su explored the metaphysics, because he knocked on his teacher for advice.The teacher opened the temptation at any time, and Zhang Sheng realized it under the words.Set up a couch to stay overnight, until late at night, peeping at it with his wife, and saw the teacher's body all over the couch, with his head and feet out.And let the servants look at it, that is, as usual. (Ibid Book Fourteen) These miraculous miracles are impossible for ordinary people to see.There will also be a side effect, which is to cover up the pure light of the self-nature, making it not so bright. 12.2.3 Extraordinary reverence This refers to Sheng Gong's statement, and stubborn stone nodding.Such as: (1) The monk who fell from the broken stove in Songyue Mountain - lived in seclusion in Songyue Mountain, and there is a temple in the mountain dock. There is only one stove in the hall, and sacrifices are made from far and near, cooking and killing many lives.One day the master led the attendant monk into the temple, knocked on the stove three times with his stick, and said, "Dah! This stove is just made of mud tiles. Where does the saint come from? Where does the spirit come from? How can you cook the life of a slaughterer!" Another three times , the stove is broken and depraved.After a while, there was a man in Tsing Yi and Eguan who was in front of his teacher.The master said: "Who is it?" Said: "I am the kitchen god of this temple, and I have received karma for a long time. Today, I was told by the master that there is no way of life. I can get rid of this place and be born in the sky. I am here to thank you." The master said: "It's your inherent nature, I'm not trying to force it." The god bowed again and left. (Volume 2 of "Five Lantern Festival") (2) Xiyuan Tanzang Zen master—Jiedan, Dongchu has a large python, several feet long, with open mouth and breath, and the poisonous flame is blazing.The waiter please avoid it, the master said: "Is it possible to escape from death? He comes with poison, and I receive it with compassion. Poison has no substance, but when stimulated, it becomes stronger. Compassionate dogs have no chance, but karmic relatives will kill each other." After saying this, the python moved slowly with its head down, Suddenly disappeared. (Ibid Book III) (3) Zen Master Yongming Yanshou—the age of Zongjiao, returning to the Buddhist vehicle.It is a crown, not like meat, and it is the only food in the day.Holding the "Lotus Sutra", with all the seven elements, and only sixty years old, I can recite it all, and feel the flock of sheep kneeling to listen. (Ibid Book Ten) (4) Zen Master Jingshan Zonggao——Seeking signs of a slight illness.On August 9th, the apprentice greeted him, and the teacher encouraged him to promote the way. Xu said: "I will start on the next day." say: "Life is only like that, and death is only like that. What is so hot about having verses and nothing?" Throwing a pen and passing away.In Pingming, there is a snake ruler with a white waist and head, who is lying on the railing of the Dragon King's well, as if he is wearing righteous clothes, it is the Dragon King's manifestation. (Ibid. Volume 19) The kitchen god, the boa constrictor, the flock of sheep, and the dragon king all know how to respect their teachers and respect their teachings. This is another religion, and the people of Middle Earth do not say this. 12.2.4 Foretelling the date of death This kind of miraculous performance is most remembered in Zen classics, and only a few outstanding ones are mentioned. Such as: (1) Zen Master Tianhuang Daowu—(Tang Xianzong) Yuanhe Dinghai showed illness in April, and ordered his disciples to end early.On the darkest day, when the public asked about their illnesses, the master suddenly summoned the Dianzuo. Before sitting down, the teacher said: "Will you?" Said: "No." The teacher threw the pillow on the ground, even if he passed away. (Volume 7 of "Five Lantern Festival") (2) Zen Master Ruifeng Zhiduan——(Song Taizu) In August of the first year of Kaibao, he left a verse saying: "On the second day of the second month of the coming year, don't you temporarily abandon each other. The burned ashes are scattered in the four forests, so as not to occupy the Tanna land." On the second day of the first month of next year On the 18th, the people of the state rushed to the mountain to pay their respects. The teacher was still safe and attended as usual.On February 1st, the state pastor led all the officials to the mountain together to interrogate and wait for the night.After fasting on the second day, I went to the hall to say goodbye.Elder Shi Yuanying came out and asked, "The clouds are sad and the fog is miserable, and the crowd is groaning. Please tell me a word. I am not saying goodbye." The teacher said: "It's not the realm of the emperor." The answer: "So, if you live and die, you will return to the water. It is normal for the teacher to go and come." The teacher booed, and returned to the abbot.Sitting until Haishi, he asked the crowd, "When is the day when the World Honored One passed away?" The crowd said, "On the fifteenth day of the second lunar month." (Ibid Book 8) (3) Zen Master Nian in Shoushan Province—(Song Taizong) at noon on December 4th in the third year of Chunhua, he went to the hall and said: "This year is sixty-seven, old and sick will follow the fate and send the day. This year remembers the events of the coming year, and the coming year remembers today and today. "In the fourth year, Yueri Wushuang recorded before, went to the hall to say goodbye to the audience, and still said verses: "The golden body in the silver world, emotion and non-emotion share the same truth, when the light and dark are exhausted, they will not shine, and the sun will show the whole body at noon. Returning to the husband's room, cleansing the hair and bathing the body, until dawn, auspicious and transformed. (Ibid. Volume 19) Knowing the date of death, (2) as early as half a year ago, (3) as early as a year ago, this is not only bizarre, but also close to unreasonable, because if there is such a supernatural power, why not create another world (such as Nirvana, Pure Land, etc.), has the so-called major event of life and death really been realized?Buddhism, or all religions, are always used to standing on the ground and talking about heavenly affairs. In fact, it is always pitiful, if not lamentable, to be unable to close together. 12.3 Conform to the world The ideal of Buddhism is to go beyond the world, and its views and methods are based on the reverse.This adversity should also include the evaluation of right and wrong. Specifically, it is proud of the world. It is best to discard it as a trash, or at least treat it as a floating cloud.Middle-earth Taoism has this kind of spirit, such as Zhuangzi Ning tail on the way; it is often manifested in the life of a hermit, such as Duan Ganmu avoiding Wei Wenhou, walking over the wall.Of course, there are more Buddhists doing this, such as Hanshan and Shide, who were respected by local officials, and after complaining about Fenggan's talkativeness, they also fled.What's more, they fled into the mountains and lived with the birds and beasts.This is the same path between ideal and reality, and doing it right means thinking right.But looking through the Zen classics, some things are recorded, and the evaluation viewpoints expressed are not Buddhist, but secular.This is the neutralization of Buddhism, and it has to make concessions to the world within a certain range, but it is too much.Its performance is also various, such as respecting loyalty and filial piety is an important one.There are others of the same nature, which are illustrated below with examples. 12.3.1 Near the dignitaries The highest level of power is the emperor.There have been countless emperors throughout the ages, and when it comes to being human, it's hard to describe them in one word.But one thing in common is that they are so powerful that they can cover the sky with one hand.How many people are there in ancient and modern times who have power and do not abuse it, and do not use domineering to show their selfish ideas?Here I only say that what is related here is that he has an indissoluble bond with oppression and suffering, and also has an indissoluble bond with prosperity and wealth. Therefore, from the standpoint of Buddhism, one should avoid him far away; Do it, do it everywhere, you should also be round on the outside and square on the inside. Always remember that this is a last resort, and you should be disgusted in your heart.However, as recorded in Zen classics, sometimes this is not the case.Such as: (1) Jianfu Hongbian Chan Master—Di (Tang Xuanzong) said: "What is the Buddha's heart?" Confronted: "Buddha is the language of the West, Tang Yanjue, which says that people have wisdom and enlightenment is the Buddha's heart. There are hundreds of different names for the Buddha of the heart, but the body is only one.It has no shape, it is not blue, yellow, red and white, male and female, it is in the sky, it is not in the sky, and it is not in the human being, but in the sky and in the human, it can be male or female, it has neither beginning nor end, neither birth nor death, so it is called the nature of spiritual awareness.If your majesty responds to all kinds of opportunities every day, it is your majesty's Buddha's mind. If thousands of Buddhas share it together, you don't want to get something else. "... How can you get rid of the green mountains, and you can only return the imperial odes with a full suitcase." The teacher went in again and thanked him: "The Chinese envoy publicized the forbidden encirclement, and then ordered the ministers to live in this Zen. The door. The green hills are not allowed to hide thousands of clumsy, and the white hair will make up for it. Xiao Lu's grace is bright, Fang Zhanzhan, Lin Quan's love is bitter. Yao Ren's situation is as wide as the sky, and let the lonely clouds fly freely." Anyone who passes through the Xiaoke Nunnery, the wayward abbot, or the Zen forest of the ten directions is not allowed. Resist the pressure and insist on it." The teacher crossed the river, and stayed at Jinshan and West Lake for a while.The prefect of Siming greeted Jiufeng with the empty seat of King Yu.Shaogong (Jiufeng Jianshao) made a request for persuasion, and the people of the Four Ming Dynasty helped each other to build a big pavilion and store the poems bestowed on them, which was named Chenkui on the list.When Su Gongshi of the Imperial Academy knew Hangzhou, he asked his teacher in a book: "Cheng Yao wrote the "Chenkui Pavilion Stele", and I have finished it. Decaying and abolishing learning, I don't know if it is worthy of the stone." The emperor was very happy and gave him tea.The teacher held up the cup and inhaled it for a long time, then swung it and shook it.The emperor said: "Zen is flourishing, and it is better to enlighten you." The teacher said: "Your Majesty knows that there is such a way. If the sun shines, how dare I be lazy." That is to say, he was dismissed. Also." After the emperor ascended to Xia, he was ordered to enter the Palace of Funing to preach.Returning to the forest with an old beggar, he can travel freely when he is appointed, and the prefectures and counties must not restrain the abbot. It has been explained to everyone. After enlightenment, all the principles are revealed. Everything is in order. If or not, it is inevitable to send another message. Shun's day will be bright and the world will be clear, and the sky will be full of harmony and joy. Yanxiang is happy with his stick, throwing the ground and mountains and shouting long live." Throw the stick and get down. (Ibid. Volume 19) It is unavoidable to be a minister under the emperor's seat, and I can understand it.As for saying that your majesty's heart is the heart of a Buddha, he is proud to be bestowed with purple and titles, and even built a pavilion to store the emperor's handwriting, and invited celebrities to write inscriptions as a record. Officials who are too close to the world are dignitaries who are lower than the emperor. Generally speaking, they are also closely related to oppression and suffering, prosperity and wealth.According to the Buddhist standard of treating others with compassion and treating oneself with indifference, such people should also be feared or hated and kept away, at least in this way.But that's not always the case.The most prominent manifestation was in the Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties and after that, many Zen masters lived in a certain temple on a certain mountain according to the official order, and seemed to be proud of having this karma.Such as: (5) Chan Master Huiling of Changqing—(Emperor Ai of the Tang Dynasty) Tianyou three years, Quanzhou governor Wang Tingbin invited Zhaoqing to live.On the day of the opening of the hall, the public court clothes were in the corner, and he said: "Please tell me the teacher." The teacher said: "Have you heard about it?" The public worshiped.The master said: "Even so, I'm afraid some people will not agree."...Minshuai please live in Changqing, named Master Chaojue. The monk asked: "Your lord will come down personally, and the crowd will gather together, and ride from the ancestor, please ask your master to sing." The master said: "Is it because you have failed your lord?" (Ibid. Volume 10) (8) Fengxue Zen Master Yanzhao——For six years, the four people asked to master Fengxue.In another eight years, Li Shijun and Hecheng scholars and concubines asked to open a hall to perform. ...The queen teacher, because of the crimes committed by the soldiers and bandits in this county, took refuge in Yingzhou with the people, and asked the Lord Li Shijun to stay in the yamen for the summer before paying homage.There is a general meeting, and teachers are invited to attend the hall. ……In September, Marquis Song of Ruzhou gave his residence as a temple, and came back to Yingzhou to invite his teacher to be the abbot of the new temple.In the first year of (later) Zhou (Taizu) Guangshun, the amount of Guanghui was bestowed.The teacher has lived for twenty-two years, and there are often more than a hundred people. (Ibid Book 11) Although this kind of monastic life is due to objective circumstances, I always feel that the smell of the government is too strong and the smell of the mountains is too weak. 12.3.2 Reminiscing about old times I quoted the words of "The Book of the Later Han·Xiangkai Biography" earlier: "The Buddha does not spend three nights under the mulberry, and he does not want to be long, and he is born with love, and he is so refined."I often think that Buddhists are mainly idealists. According to imagination, it is clearly difficult and difficult, but they think that it is not difficult to do it with the power of Daxiong.But in some aspects, such as exquisite psychology or insight into human emotions, they are very practical.This is concentrated in dealing with suffering.They know that suffering comes from lust, so if they want to end suffering, they must have no desires and no emotions.Sansu mulberry will give birth to affection, that is, if you are emotional, or you will have attachments and demands, the result will definitely lead to suffering.Not three nights is to maintain the spirit of complete equanimity, which is implemented in behavior, that is, everything in the world is regarded as indifferent.In fact, the so-called Zen enlightenment is nothing more than being able to give up completely, and to be able to see all worldly things as indifferent.Measured by this standard, the practices of some Zen masters are not forgetful, which is close to the vulgar but far from the Tao.Such as: (1) Zen Master Qingliangxiufu——(Gaozu of the Later Jin Dynasty) On the first day of October in the eighth year of Tianfu, the monk ordered Zen Master Fayan (Qingliang Wenyi) to arrive, and after paying the order, he also wrote a letter to the lord of the country.The lord of the country ordered the court to ring the bell at the hour.In time, the masses gathered together, and the master sat upright and the police said: "There is no light or shadow left behind." (Volume 8 of "Five Lantern Festival") (2) Zen Master Shishuang Chuyuan——(Song Renzong) Baoyuan Wuyin, Li Duwei (the son-in-law Duwei Li Zunxu) sent an envoy to invite the master and said: "Dharma friends in the country, only the master and Yang Danian (Yang Yi) Er, the old year abandoned I will be the first. In the first year of the servant, I suddenly felt that I was in decline, and I endured my death to see my father." He still sent him with a letter to Tanshuai.Feeling sorry for the teacher, he and the waiter went eastward in a boat.The verse in the boat said: "The Yangtze River can't go to the end. When will the emperor's place be? Now that the cool breeze is easy, don't use the oars." When I arrived at the capital, I met Li Gong for more than a month, and Li Gongguo died.At the end of the day, he drew a circle, and wrote a verse to offer to the teacher: "The world has no support, and the mountains and rivers are in the way. The dust on the earth is the mustard of Sumina. Pick up the head and untie the belt. If you are looking for life and death, ask for the leather bag." The teacher said. : "What is the original Buddha nature?" The Duke said: "Today is as hot as yesterday." He asked the master casually, "How about a sentence before we leave?" The master said, "There is nothing to worry about, and you can do whatever you want."The master said: "Where there is no Buddha, become a Buddha." The prince passed away in a daze.Emperor Renzong paid special attention to Kongzong, heard about Li Gong's transformation, asked and answered with his teacher, and sighed for a long time.The teacher cried and mourned, and said goodbye at Linkuang. (Ibid Book Twelve) (3) Zen Master Tiantong Zhengjue—(Song Gaozong) Shaoxing Ding Chou in September, visited the county bureaucrats and Tandu, and the next time he visited the commander-in-chief Zhao Gongling and said goodbye to him.Return to the mountain on October 7th.In the morning of the next day, I took a bath and changed clothes, sat upright to tell the public, and asked the monk to ask for a pen, and wrote a book to educate Zen Master Wang Dahui, please take care of the funeral. (Ibid Book Fourteen) (4) Zen Master Zhaojue Keqin——(Song Huizong) in Chongning, returning home to visit relatives, and four people came to worship. (Ibid. Volume 19) Before dying, saying goodbye to old friends, returning home to visit relatives, and even "crying and mourning, and saying goodbye at the end of the day", in the circle of ordinary people, this is "Qi Kuo talks about banquets, and remembers old kindness", which is full of human touch, and it is worth talking about as a beautiful story .However, it is not appropriate to move into the circle of Zen masters, because it means that the mulberry has been born for three nights, and love has been born, which is not "excellent". 12.3.3 Emphasis on poetry Mentioning this point is also the intention of Chunqiu to blame the sages.Specializing in poetry and writing poems by monks, of course, has existed since ancient times.The gatha uses a poetic style (different from the long line), although the content talks about impermanence, suffering and emptiness.In the Tang and Five Dynasties, there were many poet monks, including Wang Fanzhi, Han Shan, and Shide in the early period, and Guanxiu, Qiji, Kezhi, etc. in the later period.The question here is not whether the poetic style is available or not, but what kind of wine is in the old jar.According to the tradition of China, poetry is the root of aspirations. This aspiration includes both meaning and emotion. In addition, climbing a height can give a gift, you can be a doctor, and being able to write is an honor. Therefore, poetry must have a strong sense of the world gas.It is not easy for monks to write poems, but it is not easy to completely abandon the worldly atmosphere.It's a pity that in the later period of Zen, many Zen monks wrote poems, probably not because they wanted to throw them away, but because they were happy to enjoy some of this worldly spirit.There are quite a few works like this in the classics of Zen Buddhism. Here are some examples: (1) Chan Master Shanquan Dharmazhi——Going to the hall: "Before the bright moon hangs high, the snow-browed man leans on the jade railing. In the deep rain at night, after the wind and thunder, the guest Sanyunlou wine bowl is dry." Going to the hall: "Three realms cannot, Where to seek heart? Snakes startle into the grass, birds fly out of the forest. After the rain, the mountains and halls are quiet in the autumn night, and the sound of the city will not reach the lonely cens." ("Five Lanterns" Volume 14) (2) Zen Master Yuantong Shouhui——Going to the hall: "But I know that today will return to tomorrow, and I don't know the previous autumn and the next autumn. I return to my hometown calmly, but I cross Cangzhou in a good month. Hey! It's not that people don't know. " (Ibid Book 18) (3) Zen master Baiyang Fashun——Going to the hall: "The rooster crows at the dawn of the moon, and the dog barks at the dry pile. It can only be silently understood, but it is difficult to think about it. Where it cannot be seen, the earth will shine; The six-shaped paper, Yuan Lai came out in Qingjiang. The public! It’s hard to see the words clearly, and the moon came to the window in the third watch last night." Go to the hall: "The wind blows the ridge of the maozi and the roof leaks, and the rain hits Li's eyes. It's so clear but I don't know it, but I don't know it. Come here and stand with your head bowed." Because of illness, he showed the public: "I have been ill for a long time and I have never pushed a wooden sleeper. Most people come to ask how they are doing. According to the mountain monks, they are right to ask, and there are more orioles mouthing outside the window." (Ibid. Volume 20) (4) Hui (Jingshan Zonggao), the chief Zen master of Zishouni Miao, saw the difference in his language, and asked the old lady Yantou again, and the master answered the verse: "A flat boat with leaves is boundless, and it dances in the direction of the other palace. Shang. Clouds, mountains, seas and moons are all abandoned, and Zhuang Zhou's butterfly dream is won." (Ibid.) There are also those who speak sweet words, such as: (5) Zen master Zhongzhu Zhongren——Going to the hall: "Ninety spring is over halfway, and the weather for growing flowers is melting. The song of the warbler on the branch of the begonia is good. Can the Tao and the flow of time be seen? Dao? Jin Le horse neighs on the fragrant grassland, and Yulou people are drunk in the apricot blossom sky." Going up to the hall, raising a dog with no Buddha-like words, he said: "The twenty-eight beauties are late in embroidery, and the redbud flowers are singing orioles. The pity is infinitely hurting the spring. When you stop the needle and don’t speak.” (Ibid., Volume 19) (6) Acting as a Zen master in the method of repaying kindness—going to the hall, holding up all the fingers and pointing at the fate, the master said: "The beauty is lazy to comb her hair when she sleeps, and she puts the gold hairpin in and then rests. Mostly give back his good muscles and bones, and he will be romantic without red powder." (Ibid. Volume 20) Although these poems, according to the habit of Zen, can refer to east and west, but following the rhythm of modern poetry with such effort, it is always too much to accommodate the world. There are also those who are not referring to the east and the west. For example, a famous monk Hui Hong (also known as Hong Juefan) in the Song Dynasty wrote "Shimen Wenwen Zen". Volume 10 has a poem entitled "Shangyuansu Baizhang": In Shangyuan, I stayed alone in Hanyan Temple, lying down and watching the bonfire lights reflecting the tulle.The night is long, the snow ape crows on the top of the mountain, and the dream returns to the clear moon in the plum blossom.What's the matter with being very thin and springy? I haven't arrived home when I return home.But I recall the place where young people enjoy themselves, and the soft red fragrance sprays on Jinghua. Wu Zeng's "Nenggaizhai Manlu" has a record of this poem: Hong Juefan has a poem "Shangyuansu Yuelu Temple", Mrs. Wang of Cai Yuandu, Mrs. Jing, also, read to "What is the reason for being very thin in spring, and the heart of the country has not yet arrived home", saying: "Prodigal son and monk's ear." The young lady of Wang Jinggong's evaluation is not too much, because since she has become a monk and cultivated the way of the world, "recalling the place of youth's pleasure" is always inappropriate.Generally speaking, poetry is probably not so serious, but to enjoy the pleasures of the worldly people, it is always a good thing rather than nothing, right? This writing trend that follows the world has also expanded beyond poetry.The common one is parallel prose.Such as: (7) Zen master Yuanyi of Shimen——Going to the hall: "The bright moon is in the sky, and there is no shadow in Chengtan. Ziwei turns to the setting sun, and the sky is about to dawn when the colorful phoenix returns.Outside the blue sky, stalagmites are in the sky; in the waves of green water, mud cows ride the waves.Conceived with a jade rabbit, she passed Xicen at dawn; with a golden rooster in her arms, she lived in Dongling at night.Yu Siming learned that outside the moonlight curtain, it is not a family tradition; In the Palace of the King Kong, the saints disappeared.Besides, it's a foreign matter of Ye Minglian, do you still know about it?When the autumn wind comes to enter the house, someone's house will fall with a sound of anvil and pestle. " (Ibid Book Fourteen) (8) Da Hongfa is a Zen master——Going to the hall: "The Dharma body has no form, so you can't ask for it by sound; how can you know the words when the wonderful way is dead? Hanging lips and teeth. It must be that meritorious deeds are not committed, and there is no trace left. Withered wood and cold rocks, there is no moisture; phantom people and Trojan horses, all emotions and consciousness are empty. Only then can you put your hands in the pot and turn around to be different. If you don’t see the way, you can’t stay in the country without leaks , but the smoke comes to lie on the cold sand." (Ibid.) Parallel four Li six, this is a painstaking effort to carve a dragon, which cannot be reconciled with the spirit of breaking stubbornness. 12.3.4 Anti-micro-duration Some of the manifestations of Zen masters conforming to the world mentioned above are close to the subsections.It is inferred that in addition to the brief records in the classics, that is, in the overall life of the Zen masters, there must be more than a small section.The Buddhists follow the opposite, and they are destined to meet each other. To conform to the world, at most, it can only be a question of how far to conform.This is easy to say in principle, weeds can be allowed to grow, but they must not invade the border.That is to say, words and deeds can be stretched, but they must not violate the basic teachings.What are the basics?It can be represented by the Four Noble Truths (with clear views and methods).For example, life is suffering, so we should think about ending suffering. The way to eliminate suffering is giving up, mainly giving up lust. These are the basics. If words and deeds violate this basic principle, for example, if you think that there are desirable pleasures in the world, then all the methods of practice and the Zen enlightenment you seek will be over.Conforming to the secular details, which ones will not touch the basics, and which ones will touch the basics, the situation is very complicated.But one thing is for sure, if this trend is allowed to flow downstream, it will gradually touch the basics gradually or even more and more.In the later period of Zen, many Zen masters became another kind of celebrity in the society, even the prime ministers in the mountains as passed down by the ancients. Based on the basic teachings, it should not be gratifying.This problem has existed since Buddhism was introduced into China. Later, especially after the prosperity and growth of the Southern School of Zen, the situation became clearer and more serious.It involves the survival of Buddhism (existence and death), and it is something that believers should always think about.
