Chapter 117 Yi Shiqiu

Shiqiu and I have been apart for decades.I live in Beijing, my motherland, and he lives in Taiwan, Taiwan. The living environment is different. The "Pen Club" of "Wen Wei Po" asked me to write memoirs, so I had no choice but to write about the past. I remember that before we went to the United States on the same ship, he "wrote an article "Stars and Spring Water" in July 1923, which was published in the twelfth issue of "Creation Weekly" and made a very strict criticism".In the article "Recalling Bingxin" in his domestically published "Nostalgia of Yashe - Recalling Old Knowledge), he also said that the poet of Fanxing and Chunshui "is a person who speaks coldly and meaningfully", and also said that "the first acquaintance People in Bing Xin feel that she is not someone who is easy to get close to, she is as cold as if she wants to keep people away from thousands of miles away."After that, we gradually became familiar with each other. He said: "I gradually feel that she is not a person who is proud of her talents, but she is a bit reserved..." He said a few words of praise for me, so there is no need to copy these words.

We returned to China successively in 1926, and in February 1927 he married Ms. Cheng Jishu. This Cheng Jishu is the girlfriend he told me about when he said goodbye to me before he went to the United States and boarded the ship. It's really "lover will eventually get married". After they got married, they went to Shanghai, and Shiqiu took part-time classes at Guanghua and China Public Schools. In the summer of 1930, he went to Qingdao with his family at the invitation of Qingdao University. After I returned to China in 1926, I taught at my alma mater, Yenching University. Wen Zao returned from the United States in 1929, and we held a wedding ceremony at Yanda’s Linhuxuan, and we settled down on campus thereafter.

We had fewer chances to meet Shiqiu's family, but we still corresponded frequently.Shiqiu said that I love the sea, and invited us to stay at his house for a while. I couldn't make the trip due to illness, and Wen Zao went to Zouping, Shandong for a few days. We used to visit more frequently, in the rear area in the early 1940s.We live in Gele Mountain in the outskirts of Chongqing. Shiqiu lived in Beiping because of Ji Shu’s illness, so we lived in Beibei with Wu Jingchao and Gong Yeya in a hut on the middle of the mountain. We had to climb dozens of steps to get the house. Here, for the convenience of the postman who delivered the letter, Liang Shiqiu suggested to set up a sign at the foot of the mountain saying "Yashe".Shiqiu misses Ji Shu in Yashe, living alone is boring, so she works hard to write.During this period, most of his works were published in Times Review edited by Tsinghua classmate Liu Yingshi.

After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, we went to Japan and returned to the motherland in 1951.Shiqiu returned to Peiping first, and then to Taiwan. There, his desire for creativity was still very strong, and besides writing, he also translated all of Shakespeare's works, which is a great achievement! During his stay in Taiwan, he heard the news of our death and wrote an article "Recalling Bingxin" in "Biography of People" (I have read this publication, but now I don't have it with me).I am grateful for his nostalgia and wrote to him to thank him.Shiqiu has always been in good health, not as sick as I am.Unexpectedly, Bing Xin, who did not die, wrote the words remembering Mr. Liang Shiqiu today. What saddens me the most is that he passed away suddenly the day before he decided to come back to see it, which is really a pity!
