Chapter 55 A Generation of Noble Women——In Memory of Mr. Wu Yifang

I have never been a student of Mr. Wu Yifang, but in the depths of my heart I always enshrine the teacher I admire—Mr. Wu Yifang. I remember the first time I saw Mr. Wu's demeanor, it was in 1919, under the podium in the auditorium of Peking Union Medical College Women's University.I was sitting in the first row below the stage, and when I saw her wearing an elegant and well-fitting dress and walking up to the podium calmly, I was amazed at her dignified and kind demeanor. The clear organization and bright voice made me feel that there has never been such an outstanding speaker like her on the podium of our women's university!

Since then, I have engraved the respectable and lovely image of this female educator in my heart, and I often encourage myself to use this image as a model. The period when I met her most was at the Chongqing National Political Conference after 1941.I'm a senator, and she's one of the senatorial bureaus, and I like attending meetings she presides over the most.I was in the auditorium again, looking up at Chairman Wu. When the members were speaking and debating, she was calm and correct. She pointed out who came first. She seemed to know the name and background of each member very well.Comrade Dong Biwu who was sitting next to me at that time, this respectable old Communist Party member, often said to me in a low voice:

"Such a capable chairman is also rare among men!" I heard this for some reason and suddenly felt the pride of a woman. Mr. Wu Yifang lives in Nanjing, and I live in Beijing. There are very few opportunities to meet each other. But after liberation, because we were both representatives of the National People's Congress, and because she was also the vice-chairman of the China Association for the Promotion of Democracy, when we held meetings together, we talked a lot.She is a great patriot and educator. Her words and deeds show full patriotic enthusiasm and loyalty to the cause of education. She is an old student studying in the United States and has been to the United States for many times to hold international conferences. She is well-versed in both Chinese and Western cultures, and is well-known both at home and abroad! In 1979, the Alumnae Association of the University of Michigan awarded her the "Goddess of Wisdom" award. I think she is well-deserved.

She is one of the modern figures I admire.Passed away on November 10, 1985.But characters like her are immortal. Her peaches and plums are all over the world, and there are many admirers. Her noble personality and influence will remain in our hearts forever, and we must work hard to learn from her.
