Chapter 1 Talking about old letters——on the podium of the University of Tokyo

I have known the famous "Red Gate" since I was a child. ——This "red gate" is called "red gate" in Japanese.Relatives or elders who have been to Japan and graduated from Tokyo Imperial University all boast of their "Red Gate" background, which shows the status of Tokyo Imperial University-it has been highly evaluated among foreigners. I myself have been to Tokyo four years ago, and the first place I visited was the University of Tokyo. The lush forest avenue, the solemn and elegant school building, and the many students coming and going made me feel excited and happy.

The summer before last, I was honored to be invited by the Chinese Literature Department of Dongdae University to give lectures. This spring, I was invited to give lectures again.I am not only the first foreign woman to come here, but also the first foreign woman to give lectures at Tokyo University, which makes me even more excited. I have been teaching for over twenty years. For me, nothing is more pleasing and exciting than reaching out to young men and women.Past colleagues told me this: "Our teachers did not have the right ideas to guide students in the past, and it was impossible at that time. But in the future, we should work hard to guide students' thinking in the right direction."

I remember this famous saying. In the past twenty years of experience, the students have given me countless encouragements, countless exhortations and countless criticisms; they are so enthusiastic, so rigorous, so frank and innocent. This gave me courage and filled me with youthful vigor. They want me not to stop, not to back off.Especially during the Anti-Japanese War, the students gave me infinite encouragement and spurs for their care and concern for me.I remember that in the spring of 1939 (or 1940), it was reported on the radio in North China that I had passed away. It is said that Japanese newspapers also published such news.Three or four months after this, my husband Wu Wenzao received a letter from a student who was fighting guerrillas in North China. It took several months for this letter to pass through several war zones before it was delivered. When I got the letter, it was already dilapidated.

The letter reads: "In the battlefield, a foreign reporter gave me a 'Fantasy Review', which recorded the news of Mr. Xie's death. We were infinitely sad. I still remember clearly that Mr. Xie liked to wear blue cloth clothes. Mr. Xie's gentle Smiling face...Mr. Xie has always advocated and supported democracy. Now when we need to build the most democratic, she suddenly left us and passed away. How can we not be sad! We hope to be with you and your children, Work hard to complete Mr. Xie's unfinished business..." This letter moved me and broke my heart!I shed tears many times.Later, this student died heroically on the battlefield in North China; but I still remain in the world. But his impression and deep affection for me will remain in my heart for a long time. How should I work hard!

When I was in the classrooms and campuses of Dongda University, the expressions on the faces and eyes of the students here were exactly the same as what I saw in China. The same simple clothes, full of enthusiasm, eyes pursuing knowledge, and quick and innocent movements; they also inspired me.Unfortunately, because I have not studied Japanese, I cannot talk freely. My understanding of everything in Japan is really superficial. If I can talk freely with the students, I believe that I can contribute more things in front of you.Peace and democracy in Asia require our unremitting efforts, and the people of China and Japan need our true understanding and cooperation.

We regret the painful lessons of the past and need to look to the future again! The students of Dongda University welcome me as a guest of "Red Gate", and I hope to continue to advance in the good opportunity of mutual understanding and cooperation!Tokyo, October 3, 1950 (This article was originally published on October 26, 1950.
