整个下午，李处长都不说话。张青染觉得一分钟都难得挨下去。他想怎么来调节一下这气氛，就是找不到合适的法子。搞不好又怕弄巧成拙。他手不是脚不是坐在那里，电话铃的响声都会惊得他跳起来。万难坐了一会儿，才想起可以出去理个头发，就说，我理发去李处长。李处长也不搭理。他把这理解为默许，就出来了。
走在外面，又在想这回是不是特别让李处长不高兴了？理发的时候都有些神不守舍，老在想李处长的态度。
理完头发，一看时间，已快下班了，就不打算再上办公室，径直往家里走。新理了发自我感觉很精神，便挺了挺腰板，一副气宇轩昂的样子，就觉得自己像个真正的男子汉了。一个下午心惊胆颤，多没用！不就是说了那么一句话吗？

中央电视台《新闻联播》之后，紧接着插一会儿广告。四个广告有两个是麦娜做的。广告一完就是本市新闻。听得播音员介绍新闻提要时说，市长何存德同志在宏基集团视察工作，张青染便望望老婆，却见老婆也在望他。两人都不说话，马上就是详细报道了。只见何市长在一个矮个子、大肚皮男人的陪同下，视察新建成的商品住宅。何市长说，房地产是我们市重要的新的经济增长点，要大力发展。宏基集团在我市房地产开发中发挥了龙头作用，做出了很大的贡献。我代表市委、市政府向宏基的全体员工表示感谢，并祝宏基再创辉煌！
刘仪问，那个矮个子就是姓洪的吧？
不是他还会是谁？张青染说，他这人很有架子，很少这么露脸的。平时市里领导去了，都只是那位姓邓的副老总出来陪。所以这人名气虽大，认得他的人却并不多。这回他有意露面，意味深长。
刘仪又说，这么一个人不像人，鬼不像鬼的家伙……

小宁站在李处长的办公桌边，面红耳赤，走也不是，不走也不是。小宁在处里年纪最小，平时李处长不舒服了，也常找他发火。李处长同张青染年纪差不多，又是同年进这机关的；他平时想对张青染发火也多半忌着些。但张青染总觉得李处长有时对小宁发火，有些杀鸡儆猴的意思。他今天就觉得李处长这火只怕还有昨天的余怒。他很为小宁难堪，又一时找不到解围之法。李处长却越说越起劲，一套一套的政治理论都出笼了。张青染趁李处长说话的空隙，插了进去，说，小宁，李处长的意见很对。我也有这个毛病，有时说起来只图自己痛快，忘了自己的身份。我们在政府工作，时间长了，也就油了，自己不觉得怎么的。可在外人面前，我们是政府形象，说个什么，人家就以为是官方言论，有来头的。这个我以后一定注意。

张青染忽然想起自己平时就批评一词的思考，就笑话一般说了起来。李处长，关于批评，我有个看法不知你同意不同意。我是认真翻了词典的。批评有两个意思，一是找出优点和缺点，二是专指对缺点和错误提出改正意见。平时说到批评多是指第二个意思。但依我理解，不论哪个意思，都没有情绪色彩。可是大家平时多半把批评的意思理解错了。一方面，有些做领导的，动不动就是训人，也说这是批评。其实骂人不是批评，可有的领导会说这是严肃的批评。我说也不对。严肃是指态度认真，不是说骂人就是严肃。另一方面，有些做下级的，把批评理解为骂人，或者说是把骂人理解为批评，所以领导一批评就接受不了，以为领导又骂他了，专门给他穿小鞋。所以我说，该为批评正本清源才是。
李处长听着听着就笑了起来，说，老张你还肯想些问题嘛！你分析的的确有道理。我看批评和自我批评的良好作风坚持得不好，这恐怕是个原因哩。
几个人便就这个话题探讨了一会儿。张青染却暗自好笑起来。心想，还为批评搞什么正本清源？当领导当到一定份上了，还听你讲什么道理？他们骂起人来了还顾你的面子？自古礼不下庶人啊！哪天你挨领导骂了，你抗议说，你要批评就批评，不要骂人。别人不说你神经有问题才怪。
下班后，小宁有意跟上张青染，感谢说，全搭帮你老兄为我解围，不然我退都遇不出来。不知李处长今天哪根筋被我触着了，值得他那么发火？
张青染知道不该同小宁多说什么，但仍克制不住心中的刻薄，含蓄道，你只要想着他是领导，一切都想通了。

小宁冷冷一笑，说，还哲学家？现在这世道还能出哲学家？哲学家的思想应该是独立的、深邃的。现在人们好像在进行一场浅薄比赛，你想同人说些深刻的东西，人家笑你玩深沉。大家只好争着把自己头脑中的一切思想都洗掉，像洗磁带一样。人们没有思想，只有动物本能。饥饿了想吃饭，发情了想上床。我说干脆还彻底一点，大家把自己姓甚名谁，是男是女，哪方人氏全都忘掉。
这怎么说？张青染觉得小宁蛮有意思的，就有意问道。
小宁说，真的这样了，当官的省事，好管啊。
张青染说，人人都这样了，谁来管谁？
小宁说，只留一个人有思想就行了，大家都听他一个人的，多省事！
张青染笑笑，说，让你来做这个人好了。喂，我俩怎么说着说着说到这里来了？越说越没边了。刚才是说什么？对了，是说领导同志讲痞话。其实我说，光只说说没关系。俗话说，爱叫的狗不咬人。
小宁便说，这个也是。何市长这人生活上还是很检点的。
对对，对对。不过这个问题不是你我可以随便议论的事情。张青染说着便望望小宁，琢磨着这伙子的心思。他觉得小宁虽说嘴上无遮拦，但毕竟人在官场，起码的禁忌还是懂的。说到市长，他也只得恭而敬之。
不想小宁又出奇语，道，什么随便议论不随便议论？神秘政治！我感觉才参加工作那几年，气氛还好些，这几年越来越森严壁垒了。有鬼事说都不让人说，哪有这个道理？未必你做得，大家说都说不得了？
张青染感到这种议论太危险了，就摆摆手说，小宁，你我兄弟都是小人物，莫谈国事，莫谈国事。
小宁便不说了，站在桌边翻报纸。张青染也不说别的，看着一本文件，其实是装模作样。他想小宁这个性，按民间的说法是直率，按官场的说法是幼稚。不过自己有时也这么幼稚，不然也许早捞了个正处副处的了。自己同李处长年纪差不多，只因不当官，在刘主任眼里还是小张，而李处长则是老李。
李处长回来了，今天他的啧啧真的很好，进屋就拍拍小宁的肩膀，笑容可掬，说，小宁呀！他只是这么叫了一声，没有下文。小宁便面作笑容，像是受宠若惊，又像是不知所措，总之姿态有些拘谨起来。小宁便搔搔头，抓抓脸，笑着回自己办公室去了。
小宁一走，李处长神秘地望望门，再把头往前探了一下，说，刚才刘主任找我扯了扯工作。后来专门问到你的情况，刘主任很关心你的。这次刘主任也跟何市长到下面，我把你的情况向刘主任作了详细汇报，刘主任听了很满意。
李处长只说到这里，不再说了，意味深长地望着张青染。张青染意识到了什么，连说谢谢李处长，谢谢李处长。李处长就笑笑，端起杯子优雅地抿了一口茶。
下班路上，张青染便细想这事：是不是自己要熬出头了？办公厅的人事问题是刘主任说了算的。刘主任平时打电话过来，从来不同张青染多说一句话的，总是径直叫李处长听电话。今天还问他这几天忙什么，还连说了几声好好，语气也很亲切。只是自己当时情急之中，不知说什么好，只说没忙什么。没忙什么不是等于说是在家玩吗？真是说傻话。也不知说声刘主任这几天下去辛苦了。这么一想，心里便有些鲠。
回到家里，刘仪见男人面露喜色，就问，有什么好事是不是？张青染说，没什么呀！
