日子看不到任何起色，朱怀镇真有些心如死灰了。他去过皮家几次，每次都碰上皮主席在研习书法。皮主席总是有意回避谈论任何实际话题，两人碰在一起便多是无关宏旨的清谈了。看来皮主席已准备参破红尘，逍遥自在了。既然如此，他对朱怀镜就再也不可能有什么庇护。事实上他也是心有余而力不足了。围绕权力人物，都会形成一个生态圈，衍生各类物种。权力人物一旦失势，生态圈就不复存在了，那些赖以生存的物种就会退化、变种、迁徙、绝迹。其实也没有必要描述得这么复杂，老话一句就够了：树倒猢狲散。皮德求的门庭没有从前那么热闹了，但他毕竟仍然身居政协主席位置，上门的人还是有的，只是换成了另外一些物种了。听说陈雁在荆都不太好呆了，也就不做记者了，成了袁小奇的秘书，常随着袁老板满世界飞。记得袁小奇曾经给陈雁看过骨相，说她今生必将大富大贵。她现在跟了袁小奇是否就是大富大贵了？她富肯定早富了，贵却未必。原来乌县送给皮主席家的保姆小马也走了，据说乌县给她安排了个正式工作。王姨说自己现在也还动得了，不用再请保姆了。只有圆真大师还经常往皮主席那里去坐坐，陪皮主席谈佛论道。皮主席现在多过问宗教工作，倒也是业务对口了。荆山寺有些重大佛事活动，皮主席总是欣然前往。他不必像原来那样每年拜佛都是秘密成行。最近荆山寺准备重造释迦牟尼佛，皮主席出任了“荆山寺敬造释迦牟尼佛功德委员会”名誉主任。
偌大一个世界，如今似乎只有这个书房属于朱怀镜了，每当他独坐在书桌前，总感觉这逼仄的书房容不下他内心里疯长的孤独。他没日没夜地体味着孤独，便越来越觉得孤独是一种可以触摸到的实物了，如同一个巨大的水母，透明得让他看不见，可它那无数带刺的触角无时无刻不在向他挥舞。他原来在政府住的是三室两厅的处级干部房子，搬到财政厅就住四室两厅的厅级干部房子了。算算面积，刚好多了这间书房。有天晚上，他烦躁不安地在书房里走老走去，猛然想到自己奋斗这几年，不过就是多了这间小小的书房，简直太没意思了。这间斗室好像就意味着副厅级，他现在是天天睡在副厅级上面了。
一天深夜，他突然从似睡非睡中惊起，莫名其妙地感觉到了某种希望。他马上翻箱倒柜，找出自己原来在政府工作时用过的工作日志，那是别人看不懂的密电码，记载着他的关系网。也就是他精心编制的那套所谓《公共关系处理系统》。他一个一个人琢磨，一次一次摇头，竟然找不出一个可以帮他走出困境的人。原来因为皮德求的原因，这套系统崩溃了，就像电脑出现了病毒。但他仍不死心，后来一连几个夜晚都在研究这套瘫痪的系统，可总是令他沮丧。最后，他把唯一的希望寄托在张天奇身上。
倒霉的倒霉了，走运的照样在走运。张天奇新近又有高就，调荆南市任市委书记。荆南市是荆都市的南大门，那里出过好几位大干部，是块风水宝地。大凡调往那里任一把手的，别人都会刮目相看。张天奇已很久没有同朱怀镜往来了，他调任新职，也没有给朱怀镜打个电话。朱怀镜倒是犹豫再三，给张天奇打了电话去祝贺。张天奇却是满口哈哈腔，说难哪，这里工作基础好，要开创新局面，有压力啊！朱怀镜知道张天奇说荆南工作基础好，其实是在玩拍马艺术，因为前任书记刚被提拔为荆都市的副市长，接替司马市长管财贸。朱怀镜不得不佩服张天奇，人家原来不光同皮德求处得好，同市里的其他领导都处的好，不至于像他朱怀镜，只紧跟一个人，太不保险了。
这几天召开市委全会，张天奇开会来了，朱怀镜想见见他。朱怀镜帮过他太多的忙了，现在自己陷入僵局了，他也应该帮忙斡旋一下。他相信凭张天奇现在的地位和能量，完全可以帮帮他。他除了找张天奇帮忙，也再找不出第二个人了。那套可笑的《公共关系处理系统》已被他气愤地扔到垃圾堆里去了。可是朱怀镜仍有些矜持，不想显得太没有面子。会议头三天，朱怀镜按兵不动，想看看张天奇是否会打个电话来。只有四天会议，直到第三天下午，仍不见张天奇打个电话来。朱怀镜便有些心寒了，想这世态人情真是没法说去。他晚饭都没胃口吃，一个人在书房里长吁短叹。时间一分一分钟过去，他感觉心窝里的肉在一块一块地掉。过了今天晚上，这次就没机会找到张天奇了。因为明天散会了张天奇不会在这里住宿，他会马上回荆南去。机会往往在一念之间，错过了就错过了。朱怀镜思量再三，顾不了那么多了，便硬着头皮去了张天奇下榻的宾馆。
敲门进去，有人在张天奇房间说话。张天奇热情地站起来同他握手，很是客气。那人见张天奇喊着朱厅长，知道来的不是一般人物，就告辞了。
“好久不见了，怀镜越来越精神了。”张天奇笑道。
这几个月，朱怀镜经常可以听到别人说他越来越精神了，其实是他比原来瘦多了。他心里苦涩难言，脸上却灿烂得很，“哪里啊，倒是张书记你越发显得年轻了。”
张天奇笑道：“我长你好几岁啊，还年轻？”
朱怀镜说；“你不光年龄年轻，政治生命更年轻。你是地市领导中唯一有硕士文凭的，是知识型领导，你现在这个级别只是个开始，前程不可限量啊。”
张天奇显然爱听这话，却谦虚地点着朱怀镜摇头而笑，然后又说正准备读博士。朱怀镜很是佩服的样子，说张书记的好学精神太可嘉了。张天奇自然是说哪里哪里，似乎从来没有过朱怀镜替他捉刀硕士毕业论文的事。两人客气话说了一大堆了，张天奇端起茶杯喝茶，才记起应给朱怀镜倒茶。朱怀镜摆手说不用了，要喝自己来。张天奇到底觉得不倒茶太失礼了，硬是倒了杯茶。
“怀镜啊，我新到荆南，困难很多，还要你们财政厅多多支持啊！”张天奇说。
朱怀镜很难为情的样子，笑笑说：“张书记，这话你早几个月说，我朱怀镜做得到，现在，情况不同了。”
张天奇便说：“怀镜，你别大权在握，就把老朋友忘了。反正会找你的。”
朱怀镜不相信张天奇不知道他现在的境遇，他是在装糊涂。市里主要实权厅局的头头脑脑，谁管什么，谁说话算数，地市的领导一清二楚。没有这本账，他们没法上市里办事。朱怀镜猜想张天奇装糊涂也许是为了避免尴尬。这事说来的确不是味道，可朱怀镜今天打算厚着脸皮了，便一阵长叹，“一言难尽啊，张书记啊，”随后拉开了话题，把自己现在的处境道了个明明白白。张天奇低头听着，不时感叹一句：“怎么这样？”
朱怀镜说完了，张天奇便豪气冲天地安慰道：“怀镜，没关系的，目前情况只是暂时的。你还年轻，一定会柳暗花明。”
朱怀镜需要的不是几句无关痛痒的安慰，但又不好贸然求他，便先试探道：“张书记，以你的意见，我现在该怎样办？”

两人谈得越来越投机，后来居然谈到一些有关高层领导的敏感话题了，头都凑到了一块儿。不是好朋友，有些话题是不会轻易谈论的，因为官场的人们比谁都懂得什么叫为尊者讳。两人聊到很晚，尽兴方散。
