Chapter 2 preamble

Six years is not a long time for a drow, but I can only feel the countless months, countless weeks, countless days, and countless hours of leaving Mithril Hall. That place is far from me, a time gone by, a life in memory, my path leads to... lead to what?Where does it lead? My most vivid memory of Mithril Hall is riding out of it with Catti-brie.Looking back, wisps of cooking smoke rose from Jianshi Town and drifted towards the fourth peak.Mithril Hall is Bruno's kingdom, Bruno's home.Bruno is one of my closest friends. But it's not my home, and never will be. I cannot explain this. After defeating the invasion of the drow army, everything will be fine.Mithril Hall shares prosperity and friendship with all her neighbors, protecting their borders with neighboring kingdoms; at the same time, she continues to aid poor neighbors.

Still, Mithril Hall is not a home for Katie and me.So, we had no choice but to start again, heading towards the western coast, heading for Waterdeep City. It was Katie who decided to leave Mithril Hall. She thought I was bound to get into an argument with her, but I never did.We share a common mind.We never really set our hearts on this place, we were busy with all kinds of things: defeating the enemies who rule Mithril Hall, re-opening the dwarven mines, going to Menzoberranzan, and raiding Mithril Hall. Dark elves fight. With all of this done, it seemed like we should settle down—rest, tell stories, and weave our adventures into new ones.If Mithril Hall had been our home before the battle, we should have stayed. The battles of the past, the losses of the past... for Katie and Drizzt Do'Urden. It's too late.Mithril Hall is Bruno's place, not ours. The war has left countless scars here.I had to face my dark blood, I had to face Menzoberranzan.

This is where Wulfgar died. Katie and I swore that one day we'd be back here with Bruno and Regis. But Katie saw reality.A stone splashed with blood can never get rid of the smell of blood; living in such a rock can never get rid of the shadow of pain. For six years I missed Bruenor and Regis, Orator Reginclaw, and Burke and the Brave who ruled Hardstone.I miss the magic of Silvermoon and watching the sun rise from the countless towering pinnacles of the Fourth Peak while I ride the waves of the Sword Coast.Above my head, turbulent clouds rolled, and the sky was covered with stars; below my feet, the weather-beaten clipper groaned overwhelmed.Ahead is the endless blue sea, dignified and unshakable, and at the same time galloping endlessly. The heavy rain lashed at her body, making continuous roars. The whale jumped into the air, and when it fell back to the sea, it hit the snow like a mountain.

Is this my home?I have no idea.I guess it's just another passage in my life.Is there really a road along which I can find my home?I have no idea. I rarely think about these things because I already know and I don't care.If these roads have no end, so be with them. When I have friends by my side, that is my home. — Drizzt Do'Urden
