Chapter 1 Prologue

Wulfgar lay brooding on his bed, trying to come to terms with these sudden changes in his life.Rescued from the devil Errtu's hellish prison in the Abyss, the proud barbarian returns to his friends once again.Bruenor, his dwarven foster father, was here, and so was Drizzt, his dark elf mentor and dearest friend.Hearing the constant grunting, Wulfgar knew that the halfling Regis was sleeping contentedly in the next room. And Catti-brie, dear Catti-brie, the woman Wulfgar had loved for so many years, the woman he had planned to marry seven years ago in Mithril Hall. They are all here, in Icewind Dale, their home. They are reunited and enjoy the peace that these amazing friends have earned through the heroic efforts of these amazing friends.

Wulfgar had no idea what those things meant. Wulfgar was tortured and tortured for six years under the claws of the devil Errtu. He doesn't understand those things. Strong man crosses his arms across his chest. He would never have slept if he hadn't been absolutely exhausted.Errtu would appear in his dreams. And that's what happened tonight.Wulfgar had to succumb to his exhaustion, though he was mired in chaotic thoughts. He fell into a peaceful darkness, which soon turned into a swirling gray mist, this is the Abyss Demon Realm.Giant, bat-winged Errtu sat on his carved mushroom throne like a bird perched on a tree, laughing. He always smiled so disgustingly. The laughter was not made of joy, but a mockery, an insult to the man whom the devil would torment. Now, the most vile demon was looking at Wulfgar and another, Errtu's minion, Bizmetek.Wulfgar possessed strength unmatched by other humans, and he fought fiercely with Bizmetec. The Savage kept, desperately, beating the huge humanoid arms and pair of pincer arms for a long time.

However, many flail-like limbs have been attacking him.The Bizmatek was too big and too strong, and the Savage was finally starting to tire. Every fight always ended like this: Bizmetec's one pincer grasped Wulfgar by the throat, and with its other pincer arms and a pair of humanoid arms, he held the defeated man tightly. .Bizmatek had a penchant for the art of torture, and was clearly good at it.It deftly squeezed Wulfgar's throat, holding him back, and then let go.It repeated the torture over and over, leaving the Savage gasping weakly in his hands, as time passed by him. Wulfgar sat up straight from his bed, clutching his throat desperately.Only after that did he realize that the demon wasn't here at all.He is in his bed on the land he calls home.He is safe and his friends are by his side.

friend…… What exactly does that word mean?Do they know his pain? Can they help him escape the everlasting nightmare, Errtu's pursuit? The man haunted by the nightmare could not sleep for the rest of the night, and when Drizzt came to wake him early before dawn, the dark elf found Wulfgar already in his walking gear. All five were to depart on this day, throwing the ancient treasure of Cershenipon far to the south-west.They were to travel to Kharadon on the shores of Lake Impresque, and then into the Monastery of the Flying Spirit in the Snowflake Mountains, where a priest named Cadley would destroy the unholy treasure.

Kirshnibon.Drizzt had it with him when he came to wake Wulfgar up.The dark elf didn't take it out, but Wulfgar knew it was there. He could feel it, he could feel its evil power. For Cshshinibon still maintains a connection with its last master, the demon Errtu. It was full of demonic energy, and since Drizzt had it on him and was so close to Wulfgar, Errtu remained close to Wulfgar as well. "A good day to hit the road," Drow remarked casually. But Wulfgar noticed that his tone was rather unnatural, as if speaking to Wulfgar was a boon to the barbarian.Wulfgar had a hard time resisting the urge to punch Drizzt in the face.

Instead, he muttered something in reply, striding past the dark elf who dwarfed him.Drizzt was only five feet and a few inches tall, while Wulfgar was closer to seven feet and could lift the weight of two drow. The barbarian's thighs were thicker than Drizzt's waist. But even so, if they were to fight, a wise man would think that the Dark Elves would win. "I haven't woken Catti-brie yet," Drizzt said. Wulfgar turned quickly at the name.He stared at the drow's lavender eyes, which seemed so deep that his own blue eyes always seemed too striking by comparison. "But Regis is awake, and eating breakfast. No doubt he will be eager to eat two or three breakfasts before we go," Drizzt added, laughing, but Wulfgar didn't. "Bruenor will join us outside Bryn Shander's east gate. He is with his people, and in his absence their priestess Stumpet will lead their clan."

Wulfgar heard the words, but only in one ear and out the other. These words meant nothing to him.The whole world meant nothing to him. "Want to wake Catti-brie?" the dark elf asked. "I'll wake her up," Wulfgar replied gruffly. "You mind Regis. If he eats too much, he'll slow us down. I hope to get to your friend Cadley soon, we've got to deal with Cershennibon Lose." Drizzt was about to answer when Wulfgar turned and walked to the door of Catti-brie's room.He only knocked on the door once, with a voice like thunder, and pushed the door open.Drizzt took a step in that direction, ready to chide the barbarian for his rude behavior—Catti-brie hadn't let him in yet—but he gave up.Of all the drow ever known, Catti-brie had the greatest ability to protect herself from insult or violence.

Besides, Drizzt knew that he wanted to blame Wulfgar not only for his brutality, but also for his, a man's jealousy. After all, Wulfgar had been, and might soon be, Catti-brie's husband again. The dark elf caressed his handsome face, then turned to look for Regis. When Wulfgar entered her room, Catti-brie was wearing only a thin piece of underwear, with trousers only halfway on.She gave Wulfgar a shocked look. "Shouldn't you at least wait for my answer before coming in?" she said dryly, quickly brushing off her embarrassment, pulling on her trousers, and going to get her bodice.

Wulfgar nodded and held up his hands—perhaps only half an apology, but it was more than Catti-brie had expected. She saw the pain in his sky-blue eyes, and the emptiness in his occasional nervous smile. She had spoken to Drizzt, Bruenor, and Regis, and all agreed to be patient.Time would heal Wulfgar's wounds. "The drow have prepared breakfast for us," Wulfgar said. "Should have a good meal before we go out on a long journey." "'Drow'?" Catti-brie echoed. She hadn't meant to say it out loud, but she was flabbergasted at such a distant title for Drizzt coming from Wulfgar's mouth.Would Wulfgar call Bruno a "dwarf"?And how long will it take for her to become a "girl" in his mouth?Catti-brie sighed deeply and pulled on her blouse, reminding herself that Wulfgar had just returned from hell—literally, at least. She looked at him, watching his eyes. She saw a hint of embarrassment, as if her repetition of his distant address to Drizzt had indeed shaken him. This is a good sign.

He was about to leave her room, but she walked up to him, reaching out and touching his face tenderly. Then she ran her hands across his smooth cheeks, stroking his itchy beard.Does he want to grow a beard, or has he not shaved yet?It doesn't matter to her. Wulfgar looked down at her, saw the tenderness in her eyes. For the first time since he and his friends fought the evil Errtu on the ice floes, there was honesty in his smile. Regis had three breakfasts after all.He had been complaining about the journey since the five had set off from Bryn Shander, the largest of the Ten-Towns in the desolate Icewind Dale.Their journey was first north to find easier ground, and then continued west.Far to the north they saw the towering buildings of Targos, the second largest city in the region, and over the roofs of the city, and the waters of the Pond of Dürden glistening.

In the middle of the afternoon, they had walked more than ten miles and came to the bank of the Morioka River. The river was thickened by the melting ice and snow in the spring, and the flow was fast. They followed it northward to the town of Bremen on the shores of Lake Doulden. There, Regis had arranged for a ship to be waiting for them. The friends declined the townspeople's offer to stay overnight in the village, offering them supper and beds, as did Regis's protests, declaring that he was starving and could lie down and die at any moment. They crossed the river and continued westward, leaving their home, Ten Towns, behind. Drizzt could hardly believe they were off so soon.Wulfgar had only recently been rejoined among them. All of them are back together in this land they call home, so peaceful, so beautiful. However, they must again continue to take risks due to their responsibilities. The drow pulled his hood down so the sun wouldn't hurt his sensitive eyes. Because of this, his friends did not see his smile.
