Chapter 8 tell the women we're out

Bill Jamison has always been Jerry?Roberts' best friend. The two grew up on the South Side near the Old Bazaar, went through elementary and middle school together, and then went to Eisenhower High School together, where they took classes from the same teacher as much as possible and wore each other's shirts, sweatshirts and Leggings, dating and sleeping with the same girl—whatever is convenient. They worked together in the summer—watering peach trees, picking cherries, drying hops, anything that would make a little money without a boss watching over their asses. They also bought a car together. The summer before their senior year in high school, they pooled their money and bought a '54 red Plymouth for three hundred and twenty-five dollars.

They used that car together. No problem at all. But Jerry married before the end of his first term, dropped out of school and took a regular job at Robbie's. As for Bill, he dated that girl too.Her name was Carol, and she and Jerry got along very well, and Bill hung out with them whenever he could.Having married friends made him feel older. He went to them for lunch or dinner, and we all listened to Elvis, or Bill Haley and his Comets. Sometimes Carol and Jerry made out in Bill's presence, and because there was only one bed in the apartment, the one that was usually tucked away and folded down in the living room, Bill had to find an excuse to go for a walk. Circle, go to Disong Gas Station to buy some Coke and come back.Sometimes Carol and Jerry would run into the bathroom, and Bill would have to go to the kitchen, pretending to be interested in the cupboards and refrigerator, and not listening.

He goes to them less often. He graduated in June, took a job in a factory in Darigot, and joined the National Guard.A year later, he had his own milk delivery route and his relationship with Linda was settled.Bill and Linda would go to Jerry and Carol, drink beer and listen to music. Carol and Linda got along very well, and Bill was amused when Carol privately said that Linda was a "real person." Jerry also likes Linda. "She was great," Jerry said. When Bill and Linda got married, Jerry was the best man.The wedding reception was of course at the Donnelly Hotel.Jerry and Bill are messing around together. They hooked their shoulders and sipped cocktail after cocktail.During this period, Bill accidentally glanced at Jerry once, thinking that he looked very old, much older than twenty-two years old.But by then Jerry was a father of two, had been promoted to Robbie's assistant manager, and Carol was pregnant with another.

They get together every Saturday and Sunday, and if they catch up with holidays, they get together more often. When the weather was nice, they grilled hot dogs at Jerry's and let the kids play in the little plastic pool that Jerry had bought for next to nothing, like everything else he'd gotten from the mall. Jerry had a nice house on a hill overlooking the Naches River. There are other houses around, but not very close together.Jerry is doing just fine. When Bill, Linda, Jerry, and Carol got together, it was always at Jerry's house, because Jerry had a barbecue and records, and a lot of kids who couldn't travel with him.

It happened on Sunday at Jerry's house. The women are tidying up in the kitchen.Jerry's daughters are out in the yard throwing a plastic ball into the pool, slapping the water and yelling. Jerry and Bill sat in the deck chairs on the balcony drinking beer and resting. Mostly Bill was talking—about people they both knew, about the Darigold business, and about the four-door Pontiac Catalina he wanted to buy. Jerry was staring either at the clothesline or at the '68 hardtop Chevrolet parked in the carport.Bill thought, why did Jerry become so deep, always staring at something without making a sound.

Bill moved in his chair and lit a cigarette. He said, "What's up, buddy? I mean, you know what I mean." Jerry finished his beer and crushed the can.He shrugged. "Who knows," he said. Bill nodded. Jerry said, "Go for a walk?" "Good idea," Bill said. "I'm going to tell the women we're going out." Jerry's car. They drove along the Naches River to Greed at high speed. The weather was sunny and warm, with a fresh breeze blowing into the car. "Where are you going?" Bill said. "Go play some balls." "No problem," Bill said.Seeing Jerry brighter made him feel better.

"A man can't just sit around and be bored," Jerry said.He looks at Bill. "do you understand me?" Bill understands this.He is willing to go to the Friday night bowling game with his colleagues in the factory. He likes being able to have it twice a week, after get off work, with Jack?Broderick drank a few beers together. He knows men need to get out and about. On the gravel road in front of the recreation center, Jerry said, "It's not turned off yet." They went inside and Bill helped Jerry hold the door.Jerry punched Bill lightly in the stomach as he walked past him.

"Hi!" It was Riley who spoke. "Hey, what are you guys up to?" Riley came out from behind the counter, grinning. He is a big fat man.He was wearing a short-sleeved Hawaiian shirt that hung over his jeans.Riley said, "What are you all up to?" "Hey, I'm thirsty, have a couple of Ollies," Jerry said with a wink at Bill. "How are you, Riley?" Jerry said. Riley said, "How are the lads? Where's all the work? Got another one out there? Jerry, last time I saw you, your bitch was six months pregnant." Jerry stood there, blinking.

"Where's Ollie?" Bill said. They sat on stools by the window.Jerry said, "What the hell is this place, Riley, where you don't see a girl on a Sunday afternoon?" Riley smiled."I guess they're all praying in church for coming here," he said. They each drank five cans of beer and spent two hours playing three rounds of sequential ball⑥ and two rounds of snooker.Riley sat on a stool, talking and watching them play.Bill kept looking at his watch, then at Jerry. Bill said, "What do you think, Jerry? I mean, do you think it's okay?" Jerry drank the beer from the can, crushed it, and stood there for a while, turning the can in his hand.

Once on the freeway, Jerry let go - somewhere between eighty-five and ninety mph. They had just passed a pick-up truck loaded with furniture when they saw the two girls. "Look there!" Jerry said, slowing down. "I could use that." Jerry drove another mile or so and pulled over on the side of the road. "Let's turn back," Jerry said. "Let's go and try." "Jesus," Bill said. "I have no idea." "I need a little of that," Jerry said. Bill said, "Yeah, but I don't know." "Just stop talking nonsense," Jerry said.

Bill glanced at his watch, looked around, and said, "Go talk to me, I'm not very good at it." Jerry honked the horn as he turned the car around. He slowed down as he approached the girl.He parked the Chevrolet on the shoulder opposite them. The girls continued on their bikes, but they looked at each other and laughed. The one on the inside was a tall, slender man with dark hair. The one outside has light hair and is a little smaller. Both were wearing shorts and a tank top. "Bitch," Jerry said.He waited for other cars to drive past so he could turn around. "I want the one with the black hair," he said. "The little one is yours." Bill moved his back against the chair in the front row, and pushed up the sunglasses on the bridge of his nose. "They won't do anything," Bill said. "They'll be on your side," Jerry said. He turned the car and drove back. "Get ready," Jerry said. "Hey," Bill said as the girl rode up. "My name is Bill," Bill said. "Okay," said the black hair. "Where are you going?" The girls didn't answer. The little one laughed. They continued to ride and Jerry continued to drive. "Oh come on, where are you going?" Bill said. "Not going anywhere," said the little man. "Where are you going?" Bill said. "You wouldn't want to know," said the little man. "I told you my name," Bill said. "What's your name? My friend's name is Jerry," Bill said. The girls looked at each other and smiled. A car drove up from behind, and the driver honked his horn. "Shut up!" Jerry yelled. He pulled aside a little to let the car go by.He then pulled the car alongside the girls again. Bill said, "We'll take you. We'll take you where you want to go. Promise. You must be tired from riding. You look tired. Exercising too much isn't good for you." Good thing. Especially girls." The girls just laugh. "Got it?" Bill said. "Now tell us what your names are." "My name is Barbara and her name is Sharon," said the little man. "Great!" Jerry said. "Now figure out where they're going." "Where are the girls going?" Bill said. "Barbie?" she laughed. "Not going anywhere," she said. "Follow the road." "Where are you going?" "Do you want me to tell them?" she said to the other girl. "I don't care," said another girl. "It doesn't matter if you say it or not," she said. "I'm not going anywhere with anyone anyway," said the girl named Sharon. "Where are you going?" Bill said. "Are you going to 'Painting Rock'?" The girls laughed. "That's where they're going," Jerry said. He stomped on the gas and pulled over to the shoulder ahead, stopping so the girl had to pass on his side. "Don't be like that," Jerry said.He said, "Come on." He said, "We've met." The girl just rode over. "I won't bite you!" Jerry yelled. The dark-haired girl glanced back.Jerry thought there was something special about her look. But for girls, you will never know. Jerry rushed to the high speed, mud and stones splashed under the wheels. "We'll see you!" Bill called as he passed them. "Can't run anymore," Jerry said. "Did you see the way that slut looked at me?" "I don't know," Bill said. "Maybe we should go back." "It's done!" said Jerry. He parked on the side of the road with a few trees. The road forks at "Painting Rock".One road leads to Yakima and the other to Naches, Emon Carra, Chinook Pass and Seattle. A hundred yards from the road there was a high, sloping knoll of black rock which formed part of the foothills.Paths and caves are distributed like a honeycomb above. The walls of the cave are full of inscriptions left by the Indians. The cliff face of the rocky hill facing the freeway is covered with things like: Naches 67 - Glider Wildcats - Christ Redeemed - Beat Yakima - Repent. They sit in the car and smoke.Mosquitoes flew in and tried to bite their hands. "Wish there was a can of beer," Jerry said. "I really need a can of beer," he said. Bill said, "Me too." He looked at his watch. Once the girl came into view, Jerry and Bill got out of the car. They leaned against the front fender of the car. "Remember," Jerry said.He got out of the car, "The dark one is mine. The other one is yours." The girls left their bicycles and walked down a path. They disappeared around a bend and reappeared a little higher. They stood there looking down. "What are you doing with us?" the black hair shouted down. Jerry headed that way. The girls turned and ran off in a hurry. Jerry and Bill kept climbing at walking speed.Bill was still smoking a cigarette, stopping every now and then to take a long drag.At the bend in the road, he glanced back at their car. "Let's go!" Jerry said. "Here we go," Bill said. They kept crawling. But Bill had to stop and catch his breath. He could no longer see the car now.He couldn't see the highway either.Looking down to his left, the Naches River could be seen like a strip of aluminum foil. Jerry said, "You go right, I'm going straight. Let's cut these two sluts off." Bill nodded. He was too out of breath to speak. He went up a little, and the road began to descend and turned into a valley. He looked and saw the girl. They crouched behind a rock.Maybe they were laughing there. Bill took out a cigarette. But he couldn't light it.Then, Jerry showed up.It doesn't matter after that. Bill just wanted to do that.I even just want to see them when they are naked. On the other hand, if it didn't work out, he didn't care. He never knew exactly what Jerry wanted to do.But it all starts and ends with a stone.Jerry used the same rock on both girls.First the girl named Sharon, and then the girl who was supposed to go to Bill. ① Hops, twining vines, the dried mature flowers of this plant, which contain bitter, aromatic oils used in the brewing industry to prevent bacterial activity and increase the characteristic bitterness of beer. ② Elvis (Elvis), 1935-1977, full name is Elvis?Presley (ElvisPresley), American singer, actor and musician.Known as the king of rock and roll.Commonly known as Elvis Presley. ③ Bill Haley (Bill Haley), 1925-1981, one of the earliest rock musicians in the United States. He is widely regarded as the first person to popularize rock music. ④ Darigold, an old American dairy product sales company. ⑤Oly (Oly), a beer produced by Olympia Brewery in Washington State, USA. ⑥Sequential ball (rotation), a fifteen-ball billiards game. When playing, you need to hit the balls in the order of the numbers of the balls. ⑦Shoulder (shoulder), located from the outer edge of the highway roadway to the edge of the roadbed, has a certain width of the belt, used for emergency parking.
