Chapter 1 "Camel Xiangzi" Preface

Camel Xiangzi 老舍 497Words 2018-03-19
This book was written in the year of the July 7th Anti-Japanese War and was serialized in "Cosmic Wind".Before the serialization is finished, the war begins.Later, this book was printed as a separate edition in Guangzhou, or it was also printed in Guilin, but I didn’t see it, because Guangzhou and Guilin also fell to the enemy one after another, probably this book was also destroyed by the enemy. The "first edition" I saw was a native paper printed in Sichuan. It is said that during the Anti-Japanese War, this book was translated into Japanese, but I have not seen it.After the war, there was another Japanese translation, but it was translated with my consent.

In 1945, the book was translated into English in the United States. The translation is good, but the last paragraph is deleted, and the tragic ending is changed to a happy reunion, so as to cater to the psychology of American readers. The ending of the translation is that neither Xiangzi nor Xiaofuzi died, but Xiangzi snatched Xiaofuzi out of the white house, and everyone was happy.Since the translator did not ask for my consent in advance, and the book had become a bestseller when I arrived in the United States, it was impossible to correct it according to the original text. Later, the translations in other languages were all based on the English translation; the copyright belongs to the translator because there is no international copyright agreement between China and the United States, and I cannot interfere. This kind of translation is now available in six languages: German, French, Italian, Czech, Swiss, and Spanish, and the last one is an abridged translation.

A Chinese film company in Hollywood decided to adopt the book and make it into a film, but it was unsuccessful and may never be possible. This book was originally published by Cultural Life Publishing House, but now it is published by Chenguang Publishing Company. I am grateful to Cultural Life Publishing House for its willingness to transfer it. Lao She is prefaced in Beijing. April 1950. Contained in the corrected version published by Shanghai Chenguang Publishing Company in May 1950
