Chapter 22 Chapter Four

heavy yoke 周梅森 1901Words 2018-03-18
It was already the summer of 1929 when I detoured to Turkey and returned to China. It seems that nothing major happened during this period. Ji Boshun did not record much in his book "A Faithful Person". The only thing he mentioned was that he was detained by the Turkish police in Istanbul for interrogation. , Compared with his later difficult career, it is nothing. What is worth noting is Ji Boshun, Li Weimin, and Wu Guoping's description and inner monologue on the bullock cart on the way back to Turkey. This section of description and monologue truly reveals their situation and state of mind at that time, and it seems necessary to pay special attention to it.

Ji Boshun described the situation in this way: "...The bullock cart is slowly moving forward on the muddy and bumpy road in the wilderness. Every time the wheels turn, there is a 'squeak' sound, which makes you feel extremely heavy. If you have ever brought A holy feeling like religion, throw yourself into a country with a successful revolution, and the country with a successful revolution drives you out of the country; Enemy; if you have ever been on a bullock cart in a foreign country with a hungry belly and a tired body, I think you will probably also feel the heavy taste.

"...I really wanted to cry at that time, I really wanted to have a good cry against the sunset in a foreign country, for Comrade Trotsky, for Comrade Ivanovich, and for myself. But I didn't, when I saw Working hard to pull the ox under the yoke of the cart, I suddenly understood: My expelled comrades and I are the ox pulling the cart! The cart of the Chinese revolution in the future needs us to work together to pull it! There may be more There will be many setbacks, and there will be many injustices, but when the cart of revolution is pulled to the end of victory, history will thank us, and the people will thank us! The temporary setbacks of the Trotsky Opposition in the Soviet Union by no means mean Failure does not mean inaction in China. We have left Stalin’s bureaucratic and authoritarian Soviet Union, and we can show our talents in China. We will use the practice of the Chinese revolution to prove Comrade Trotsky’s Marxist theory of revolution...

"...I shared my thoughts with Comrades Li Weimin and Wu Guoping, and they also agreed. They said that the Chinese comrades should be told the truth about what happened in the Soviet Union without reservation, and that Trotsky's thoughts— ——especially the accurate and complete dissemination of ideas about the Chinese revolution to China in order to expose Stalin's opportunistic face and fundamentally change the image of the Chinese Communist Party. "...the wheels were still creaking, the ox was dragging a heavy load under the yoke, struggling to move forward, and the Turk driving the ox cart raised his whip dumbly...seeing that Yang Whip in the air, I thought again: on the future revolutionary journey, will I fall under the whip of the driver? Will I become a driver myself and whip the revolutionary whip on the back of my comrades? It started from here, and gradually became endless, when the ox cart drove into a small market town called Elnar in the evening, I fell asleep dimly..."

It should be said that in Turkey, when the bullock cart was slowly driving towards the small market town called Elnar, Ji Boshun had a foreboding of the twists and turns of his future life. However, because of his belief and because of Trotsky, the twists and turns and ups and downs will accompany him in his future life, which Ji Boshun never thought of. In June 1929, Ji Boshun arrived in Shanghai and actively participated in the activities of the Trotskyite organization "Our Word Society".In less than a year, he successively wrote and translated more than a dozen articles introducing Trotskyism and criticizing Stalin, and personally distributed the publications and leaflets of "Our Talking Society", becoming the earliest Trotskyist in China important members of the group.

In May 1931, under the personal urging of Trotsky, who was in exile in Turkey, "Our Word Society" and three other Trotskyite organizations "October Society", "Battle Society" and "Proletarian Society" were engaged in endless debates due to different views. Society" achieved unity.Ji Boshun attended the Congress of the Left Opposition of the Communist Party of China held in Shanghai on behalf of "Our Word Society", at which the Opposition Central Committee was established.Chen Duxiu, the former general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, was elected as the general secretary of the opposition Central Committee, and Ji Boshun was elected as a member of the Central Committee.

This was the apex of Ji Boshun's life and also the apex of the Trotskyist organization in China. The glory at the top is extremely short-lived.In those short days, under the appearance of unity, the members of the Trotskyites who belonged to the four groups continued to fight among themselves. There was a lot of quarreling over the theoretical issues of the Chinese revolution and the personnel arrangements of the opposition Central Committee. In the end, it even developed to the point where someone reported to the reactionary authorities, resulting in the arrest of many members of the Central Committee. The Trotskyist Central Leading Organization was paralyzed twice in just over a year. The second time even the general secretary Chen Duxiu failed to escape the fate of being imprisoned.

Ji Boshun was also arrested, but he was not arrested collectively when the central authorities were destroyed twice, but was arrested individually in October 1933 when he was betrayed by the traitor Li Weimin in the Shanghai French Concession.Ji Boshun didn't know when Li Weimin became a traitor. All I know is that in 1931, when Ma Yufu of the "Proletarian Society" went to the Longhua Police Headquarters in Shanghai to report, several members of the Central Committee were arrested, and Li Weimin seemed to be arrested as well, and he disappeared within two years. It was by chance that Ji Boshun met Li Weimin on the streets of the French Concession on that day in October 1933.Li Weimin denied that he had ever been arrested, and very enthusiastically asked Ji Boshun to go to a restaurant for a drink at night, and Ji Boshun went.Ji Boshun never dreamed that the self-proclaimed "Natural Trotskyite" Wenzhou native would set a deadly trap for him. When Ji Boshun rushed to the restaurant, he realized that the situation was not right, there were spies everywhere, but it was too late to get away.Ji Boshun yelled and attracted many foreign patrols, hoping that the foreign patrols would protect him.Unexpectedly, those patrols arrested him without any explanation, and three days later he was extradited to the Shanghai Longhua Police Headquarters.

Ji Boshun's ordeal on Chinese soil began from then on.
