2000/04/12 Sanlian Life Weekly Author: Ying Peng It is a grand event for my little girl to have abacus in her arithmetic class.Just like before and in the future whenever she wants to learn something new, the whole family is also busy as usual.I bought an abacus, looked for tapes with abacus formulas, and had to review the unfamiliar fingerings on the long-lost abacus. The cultural connotation and practical use of abacus are probably very few.Of course, education experts will not agree with this view. They will review the past and discuss how the abacus is the quintessence of the country, how the abacus has cultural heritage, and how using more abacus is beneficial to exercise the dexterity of the fingers and so on.

There are indeed two examples in my memory that benefited deeply from the abacus. One is: A certain gentleman is over half a hundred years old and has done nothing. When he is extremely bored, he also realizes that he has to do something to live a worthy life. But in fact, writing can't dance, ink and martial arts can't handle guns, it's nothing surprising. Finally thought of the collection. However, looking around, it seems that someone has collected everything from watches, coins, stamps, to face masks, sparks, and cigarette casings.Suddenly one day, I had an idea and thought about it, why not collect stone inkstones, door locks, and even chopsticks? So, he buried himself and started working without asking the result. Not to mention, firstly, he may be able to find it, and secondly, there are very few people who collect this object. Anyway, after many years, he has made some achievements and became an expert on his own.Of course, the abacus at this time is no longer used to assist calculations, but has completely become a plaything.Seeing this real person talking about the history and culture of the abacus among a bunch of big and small abacus, and the ingenuity of the ancient working people, I don’t know why, anyway, I can’t understand it.

The second example is from a book about a foreign liar. The general idea is that one day a foreign scammer went to a group of rich people and boasted that he was starting a major industrial project to produce a novel, practical, easy-to-learn, and power-free computing tool called Sucaba. How green, how low-consumption, how foolish, and how efficient this new product is, the rich people were very interested in hearing it, and they donated their money to invest in this promising project. The foreign swindler was really unambiguous, and it didn't take long to send a prototype. The wealthy elders couldn't wait to tear off the layers of packaging on the outside. As you can guess, there is just an abacus inside.Unavoidably, everyone stared and exclaimed, "What's this?" Fortunately, among the rich, there are also some smart people: "This is China's abacus!" At this moment, the wealthy elders slumped in their chairs. They remembered that the foreign liar was not lying. This is indeed a "computing tool that is novel and practical, easy to learn, and requires no power supply."And he actually already revealed the answer: the so-called Sucaba just reversed the alphabetical order of the English word Abacus. As I read this, I have an indescribably complicated feeling that I have acted as a liar's prop for our national quintessence.
