Chapter 53 Tai Chi diagram

On the wall of a temple in the countryside, I saw a very special picture of Tai Chi, which was composed of two fish. The lower fish was black with white eyes; the upper fish was white with black eyes. It looks like the two fish are there loving each other, playing and chasing each other. Standing in front of that picture of Tai Chi, I thought that these two fish should be the same color, but one swims into the shadows, and the other swims in the sunny world. Sometimes the dark ones swim into the light; sometimes the bright ones swim into the shadows. ah!How wonderful it is to have yin and yang in this world. Only when there is light and shadow can it become a vivid world.

How wonderful it is to have day and night in this world, which makes us perceive the flow and changes of the years, and let us know what to cherish. How wonderful it is to have joy and pain in this world. Pain makes us sensitive and delicate, and joy makes us broad and gentle. Let us not lose the awakened heart in joy, it is the black eye of the white fish. When we are in pain, we should not lose our longing for light, it is the white eyes of the black fish.
