Chapter 114 The spirit of Tsinghua as I see it

The spirit of Tsinghua as I see it In the past six months, colleagues and students often talked about the "Tsinghua Spirit".Although I am not from Tsinghua University, I have served the school for many years and am very interested in this issue.Once I talked with a classmate, I once assumed that the spirit of Tsinghua University is "service".Later, when I talked with Mr. Qian Weichang, he seemed to think that the spirit of Tsinghua University was "independent and critical".I admit that Mr. Qian's view, together with his example, is justified. But about "service", I would like to ask you to say something.

Mention "service" and it is easy to think of the YMCA.The service spirit of the YMCA has its advantages and disadvantages, which I do not want to discuss here. The service spirit of Tsinghua that I assume is different from that of the YMCA.For clarity, I'd like to say "do it" now.Regardless of the old system or the new system, Tsinghua graduates are the most middle-level cadres in various departments of society.Mr. Gu Qiao said this more than ten years ago, and now it seems that it is still the same.Mr. Gu said that these middle-level cadres are ordinary workers. Although their contributions are small, overall they are significant enough.Mr. Qian's point of view is to point out their lack of sophistication. This is precisely for important things, to do hard work, to work hard.Young people dislike sophistication and put emphasis on practical work. Although the degree varies, this is a general trend. However, Tsinghua University is farther away from the city, and the old system is farther away from China than five years ago. In addition, Tsinghua University students may generally be younger when they enter school, so this phenomenon is particularly obvious. Some people talk about the spirit of Tsinghua, emphasizing the love of cleanliness and order during the school period. At first glance, these seem to be small things, but they are closely related to the step-by-step hardworking spirit of the post-graduation service period.

Some people may think that this spirit of hard work is good, but too much emphasis on this spirit sometimes makes people see only the trees but not the forest. However, this is Chunqiu's words to blame the sages. It is helpful to Lin Zi to be able to trim each tree. Made on April 21, 1947. (Originally published in the tenth issue of "Tsinghua Weekly" on April 27, 1947)
