Academic life 季羡林 1707Words 2018-03-18
I left Göttingen on October 6, 1945, and traveled to Switzerland in a jeep. Where did the car come from? I'm here to trace the story.I mentioned several times above that the traffic in Germany has been completely destroyed. If you want to go to Switzerland, you have to find a car yourself. Then Zhang Wei and I thought of "Allied Forces".At this time, part of the American garrison remained in Göttingen, but the municipal management had been handed over to the British. We went to the so-called military government and met Captain Watkins of the British Army. He was very polite and promised to help.We are scheduled to leave on October 6th.On this day, a car came, the driver was a Frenchman, and an American major accompanied us.According to himself, he wanted to take this opportunity to visit Switzerland.Only after serving for a certain period of time, American officers and soldiers have the right to visit Switzerland. Opportunities are not easy to get.The major did not want to pass up the opportunity, so he went with us.

There were six Chinese who left Göttingen: three members of Zhang Wei's family, two members of Liu Xianzhi's family, and myself. After some intense action, we settled into the car and it was off right away onto the world-famous National Highway.I looked back at Göttingen, and a ready-made Tang poem flowed out of my mouth immediately: "The guest tree looks back as my hometown." The smoke trees in Göttingen are refreshing. But the car drove faster and faster, and finally became a blurred shadow and disappeared completely. At this time, I had no room in my heart to brew parting feelings. The green mountains and green waters on both sides of the road attracted all my attention. The whole country of Germany is densely wooded, and it is the golden autumn weather at this time.Although after six years of war, the trees in the mountains and forests have not been damaged, and they are still lush and lush. The colorful and complex autumn forest scenery that I used to see every year in Göttingen is still presented in front of my eyes, but it changes from time to time with the driving of the car, which is pleasing to the eye. However, once you enter a larger city, it will be a piece of dilapidated walls, which makes people look sad. This kind of mood that is happy for a while and sad for a while is like the waves of the sea, surging and turbulent.I recited two more lines of poetry:

Ruthless is the original tree Still Hongxia Dyeing Frost Sky That's how I feel about it. Because it was almost noon when we left Göttingen. When we drove to Frankfurt, it was already late and we had to stay here.Perhaps the American major who accompanied us planned to spend the night here from the beginning, because this is where the US military headquarters in Germany is located, and the accommodation conditions are very favorable. We stayed in a hotel reserved for American officers called the Four Seasons Hotel. The Americans in charge of the hotel were very kind, and arranged for us a sumptuous dinner that we hadn't eaten in many years, and we enjoyed it.You know, we are all poor people at this time, we don't have American banknotes, and German banknotes seem to have been invalidated, we are penniless, but we are treated so preferentially, I really can't help but be grateful, Americans are restless , more than lively, not calm enough. It wasn't quiet in the hotel either. However, we were in a good mood and had a very comfortable evening.

Early the next morning, we got in the car and set off.I now copy the diary entry for October 7, 1945 below: Drive at 8 o'clock and drive south along the Reichsautobahn (national highway). There are not many cities on the road, and there are very few villages.Because most of this car road takes a straight line.I got lost in Mannheim (Mannheim), and after a long detour, I drove out of the city again.Only ruins of the city remain.Bypassing Heidelberg (Heidelberg), only to see a green hill in the distance.Walking into the French-occupied area, the first thing you notice is that there are fewer cars. There are very few real French in the French soldiers, most of them are black, and there are also yellow people. At dusk, we arrived at the German-Swiss border.Passed the French checkpoint and thought it was smooth sailing. When we arrived at the Swiss border, we negotiated for half a day because of problems with the entry permit, and then returned to Lnach, Germany, where we stayed in a hotel specially prepared for French military officers.

This is what happened on my last day in Germany. We thought it was "smooth sailing", but in fact it was not smooth sailing. We ran aground on the border and were caught in a dilemma. You can imagine the anxiety in our hearts. The next morning, we went back to the Swiss border and talked on the phone with the Chinese embassy in Switzerland and my junior high school classmate Zhang Tianlin.Anyway, we have come here, and we have no turning back, and it is impossible to turn back.Although we have no cauldron to break and no boat to sink, we can only fight with our backs in the spirit of breaking the cauldron and sinking the boat, and there is no second way out.Fortunately for us, the Swiss side came to inform us and let us enter the country.Of course, our group of Chinese people are very happy. But the American major who accompanied us and the French driver who drove us could not enter Switzerland. We really feel very sorry, feel very sorry for them. But there is nothing we can do, so we can only give them some of the Chinese gadgets we carry with us as souvenirs, hoping that we will be able to love each other and never forget each other in the future. We know that this is just a lie.Meeting each other in life is sometimes like duckweed and running water, fleeting. We had only been together for two days with this American friend and French friend, and we felt reluctant to leave when we parted. Their faces will always remain in our memory.

We finally said goodbye to Germany and entered Switzerland.
