Chapter 3 From the social education movement

Memories of the bullpen 季羡林 2160Words 2018-03-18
In the first half of the 1960s, another thrilling movement called the "Socialist Education Movement" was launched across the country.Peking University has made a big toss again. The law is still: You will punish me in this exercise, and I will punish you in the next exercise. They fought for a while, then calmed down, and were ordered to go to the countryside to engage in socialist education movements. In the autumn of 1965, after the "International Hotel Conference", I was ordered to go to Nankou Village in the suburbs of Beijing to serve as the deputy captain of the village's social education team, and to manage the Party consolidation work. This is a small mountain village. Before the railway was built, it was the traffic artery inside and outside the mouth.According to what the local people told me, it was very prosperous back then, with many shops on the street, hundreds of camels lying on the street every night, and the sound of punching and ordering in the tavern all night long.Once the railway was repaired, the situation changed immediately, and now it is not what it used to be.The whole village is full of dilapidated walls, desolate and lonely, and the grand occasion of that year is only left in the memory of the elderly.

I don't want to talk about the social education movement in the village.I will only talk about some situations related to the "Cultural Revolution".This so-called "revolution" that is "unprecedented in history" has a very big background. This is a well-known fact, and I need not elaborate on it.It actually started in the winter of 1965, when I was in Nankou Village. At this time, Yao Wenyuan wrote an article: "Comment on the New Historical Drama "Hai Rui Dismissed from Office"", which ignited the flames of "revolution".This article speaks like a tongue, distorts the facts, and is full of heresy. It is also said to have a lot of background.Yao Wenyuan is nothing more than a clown with a chicken feather as an arrow to perform on stage. It was in Nankou Village that I read this article.I have always lacked political cells in my head. Although I studied politics almost every day after liberation, I was naturally dull and talked about class struggle all the time, but I just ignored class struggle.I didn't feel the taste of class struggle at all from the article.I didn't feel at all that this was "the mountain and the rain are about to come and the wind is full of the building", which is a signal that a big storm is coming.I just treat it as a normal article. At the same time, I have the disadvantage (advantage?) that I can't hide my words. After reading it, I just talked about it and talked about it without any scruples.I threatened everywhere: I don't see any connection between "Hai Rui Dismissed from Office" and Peng Dehuai.I also said that I know all three village chiefs in the "Sanjia Village", and some of them can be said to be friends.Wu Han and I were classmates at Tsinghua University in the early 1930s.In 1946, after I returned to Peiping, at his invitation, I went to Tsinghua University to give a lecture to students and stayed at his home overnight. And so on and on.How do I know that the speaker has no intention, but the listener has intention. One of my students came to Nankou Village with me to engage in social education activities. He was born in a poor peasant and was a martyr. It is this one of my "confidants", who keeps everything I say in his heart, and waits for the settlement after the autumn, with a smile on his face.Later, during the "Cultural Revolution", I myself jumped out against the notorious "Lafayette" at Peking University and was locked up in a bullpen. This student of mine saw that the time had come, so he just fell into trouble, so he picked up a small black gauze hat, and poured out what I said at this time, pouring beans in a bamboo tube, adding a little distortion It reached my head and "beat" me into a "boy from Sanjia Village"!Let me say by the way, this son of a poor peasant and a martyr who has a hundred reasons to be the successor of the proletariat has slipped to a small European country as a foreign slave.Time is merciless, it really makes people see their own truth in the mirror they make!

Gossip less, the book returns to the main story.I still read Yao Wenyuan's articles.Yao Wenyuan's profound logic and unreasonable reasoning used in this article set a very bad example for accusing people of crimes throughout the "Cultural Revolution" in the future.Whether this set of ridiculous things is Yao Wenyuan's personal invention or not, I don't think so.He might as well have plagiarized from someone with a big head.In any case, the vile influence of this kind of unhealthy wind and the far-reaching poison are really too numerous to "count".It completely confuses the logical thinking of the younger generation. As far as the wind is concerned, it has not stopped.

There is one more small matter which I must mention here. Our social education team in Nankou Village did not come from one unit.In addition to Peking University, there are also people from the Central Radio Station, the Police Corps and other units.According to the regulations above, we were all plainclothes, and we did not tell anyone about our work units. The internal situation is only understood by ourselves. We are a group of miscellaneous troops from all over the world. Although we didn't know each other in the past, we met by chance, and we were able to unite and cooperate, and our relationship was extremely harmonious.A comrade surnamed Chen came from the Public Security Corps. He was an old policeman. He was not very old, but he had ten years of Party membership. He has rich experience in public security and is very easy-going.We got along very well and talked about almost everything. However, one small thing caught my attention: no matter what letter he received, after reading it, he always burned it with fire. It's the exact opposite of what I'm used to.I have a habit, good or bad, of not only keeping all my letters, but even a little receipt and so on, and so on.What is the psychological basis of my habit?I can't tell, and I've never done any research. After seeing Chen's behavior, I was naturally puzzled.Especially during the old calendar year, the Public Security Corps sent him a printed New Year's card. This is red tape, of no importance. But Chen Lian would not let go of such a New Year's card, and he must burn it with fire, not tear it up.I couldn't hold back anymore, so I started the conversation like this:

"Why did you burn it?" "Leave no trace." "Isn't it okay to just tear it up and throw it in the latrine?" "No! Traces may still be left." "You're being overly careful." "No, those of us who work in this business know the pros and cons of it. A person may come across an idea at any time. Once you encounter it, you can't eat it." I was taken aback, this is really unheard of.I estimate in my heart: I will also encounter ideas.I have a lot of problems with me, and I also have a lot of pigtails. It is not difficult for someone to catch it.However, I am confident that I have never opposed the party or socialism; I have not joined any reactionary organization, and the label of "counter-revolutionary" cannot be pinned on me anyway.I was so happy that I didn't think about it any more.Unexpectedly, what Chen said is really a talk of experience, a truth extracted from countless facts. Not long after, I myself was labeled a "counter-revolutionary" when I came out against that "Lafayette" at Peking University.I once made up two lines of poems: "After 20 years, I realized the dream of Yanyuan and won the reputation of being anti-Party and anti-society."
