Chapter 40 The legendary story of "Battle Hymn of the Chinese People's Volunteers"

An era has its voice, and an era has its imprint. Before the army crossed the Yalu River, each volunteer army had to hold a mobilization meeting to do ideological and political work for the soldiers participating in the war. Ideological and political work seems to be empty in the minds of many people today, with little use, and even became the object of ridicule, but in that era, it was a spiritual weapon, which was very useful and effective. Ma Fuyao, who was the deputy instructor of the 5th Company of the 26th Regiment of the 1st Artillery Division at the time, was elected as a representative and expressed his determination at the mobilization meeting. What can I say? This made Ma Fuyao into trouble.

Ma Fuyao drafted a speech overnight, but after writing and revising it, he always felt something was wrong.I always feel that as soon as I come to power, I should shout a few resounding oaths to express the enthusiasm of the Chinese soldiers to resist the U.S., aid Korea, and defend the country. When it was almost dawn, Ma Fuyao was so inspired that he wrote such a poem in one go: At the mobilization meeting on the second day, Ma Fuyao walked up to the podium in a high-spirited manner, waved his arms, and shouted these few lines of the expedition oath. The oath is easy to understand and full of passion, which won warm applause from the comrades-in-arms.

Soon, the oath was published in the "Backbone News" of the Division's Political Department. At that time, Chen Bojian, a well-known reporter from Xinhua News Agency, happened to be interviewing in the army. He was very excited when he saw this oath, so he copied it. In the "People's Daily" on November 25.At the same time, he also changed "Crossing the Yalu River" to "Crossing the Yalu River", and "Chinese Good Sons and Daughters" to "Chinese Good Sons and Daughters". On November 26, 1950, the composer Zhou Weizhi, who was the deputy director of the Art Creation Bureau of the Ministry of Culture at the time, saw this poem in the newspaper at Tian Han’s home, and was deeply moved by the content of the poem. Within a short period of time, he composed a piece of music and published it in the "People's Daily" on November 30, 1950 under the title "Defeating the American Emperor's Wild Wolf".

Since I didn't know who the author of the lyrics was, the signature at that time was "Poems of Volunteer Soldiers, Songs by Zhou Weizhi", which was later changed to "Battle Songs of the Chinese People's Volunteers, Lyrics by Ma Fuyao, Songs by Zhou Weizhi". This battle song was soon sung in the volunteer army, which inspired the morale of the whole army to kill the enemy and serve the country. This song also spread quickly all over the motherland, and has been handed down to this day. It is true that passion produces poetry.Ma Fuyao later joined the Chinese Musicians Association, but he only wrote the lyrics of this song in his life.
