梁岱呆住了，缓缓地回过身向陈赓望去。 陈赓知道熊绶春是黄埔三期的，也知道他那段苦战滇缅、曾率103师血战松山，夺下日军一个个据点，打开滇缅大门的历史。他觉得熊绶春毕竟还是个人物。 于是，南坪集附近，浍河之滨一墓前上面写道： “第十四军军长熊绶春之墓。” 胡琏和黄维分乘两辆坦克，从这硝烟炮火枪林弹雨杀声吼叫的战场悄然遁去。 他们在一个岔路口分手，相约在蚌埠之南或是滁县会合。谁知此一别离，两人再无相逢之日。胡琏打开炮塔进车时，背部中了流弹，同行的战车连连长甘义三、副连长周名琴为他草草包扎了伤口，便勿匆上路，直奔宿荣公路，迅速脱离战场。胡琏余惊甫定，突然发现前面有一支民兵队伍迎面开来，心跳再度加剧。谁知过路的民兵以为是自家坦克，竟两边分开，让这铁家伙从中央穿过。胡琏见此情景，催促道：“此处共军还不晓得战场真实情况，大胆开！”于是坦克呼啸而过。民兵们被坦克卷起的灰尘呛得喘不过气，直抱怨开坦克的伙计太骄傲。 胡琏不敢再走公路了，命驾驶员从田野取捷径，经会流集直奔蚌埠地区。驾驶员怕迷失方向，有些犹豫。胡琏说：“我以星斗判断方向，你开好了。” 胡琏从炮塔伸出半截身子，指挥坦克越野前进。会流集地区的解放军没有麻痹，他们看这坦克远离战场，想必是逃敌，一阵手榴弹枪炮打得坦克钢花飞迸，胡琏跌进车里，背部血肉模糊。只因解放军没有反坦克炮，才使胡琏保全了性命。 后来，坦克油料耗尽，驾驶员抬着重伤的胡琏，行行止止，好不容易渡过涡河，找到一辆牛车，扶胡琏躺下，吱吱呀呀地向蚌埠慢吞吞地走去。胡琏侥幸逃脱。 胡琏从天上降下来，从地面逃回，虽然名噪一时，到底无补于大局，丢下了10余万将士，带回去的只是一副重创的身体（据说医生从胡琏后背取出了32块弹片）。蒋纬国在撤离徐蚌前线时，说了一番颇有见地的话：“我们尽人力以听天命。这样的大战关系国家存亡，绝非少数人勇敢牺牲即能挽回战局的。” 黄维的坦克没开多远，发动机就坏了。他突然发起急来，身上着了火一般燥热。他推开盖子，想爬出坦克喘口气，吹吹风。可是，令他万分沮丧的事情发生了，解放军从四面八方包围过来。他急忙伸手去摸口袋里装安眠药的瓶子，可怎么也摸不到。等摸出来了，为时已晚，一个五大三粗的解放军战士不要命似地扑上来，抓住了他的双腕。黄维混在俘虏里，被解放军收容。在填写被俘人员登记表时，他企图蒙混过关，在表上随便写道：方正馨，江西弋阳人，14军上尉司书。 从他的衣着举止中，解放军早就发现破绽，于是有意问道： “入伍前干什么？”“我民国十七年就当小学教员。” “还干过什么？”“我当了六年小学教员，一年科员，以后就入伍了。” “你表上不是填今年十月才入伍吗？”“我糊涂，我糊涂……” “上尉司书一个月多少钱？”“七十多元。” “到底七十几元？”“你看我真糊涂，看……姓名职务不符，甘愿挨枪毙。”
