入朝以后，罗盛教目睹美帝国主义的罪行，燃起了他对敌人的刻骨仇恨。他曾几次向指导员要求跟部队一起上前线打仗。一天，罗盛教和炊事员冒着敌人炮火去阵地送饭回来时路过一座村庄，他看到一个10多岁的孩子抱着母亲痛哭，母亲已被美军的飞机炸死，血流满地，罗盛教含泪把仅有的钱和一些衣物留给孩子。残酷的战争教会了他如何去爱，如何去恨。 朝鲜的冬天，滴水成冰。部队奉命调到后方休整。侦察队来到平安南道成川郡石田里——北朝鲜后方的一个秀丽山村。1952年1月2日，一个严寒的早晨，石田里的山野间银装素裹，分外刺眼，清清的泥栎河早已被冰层封住，几个朝鲜少年在河上欢快地滑冰。罗盛教和战友宋惠云早操结束后，一起走过河边的雪地，然后分头去找刚才操练时扔的两颗打不响的手榴弹，准备拣回来继续练习投弹。 “哎呀——”一声惊叫传来。罗盛教一抬头，发现滑冰的朝鲜少年中，有一人失足掉进了冰窟窿。这少年双手扑了几下，瞬间就没了顶。旁边的三个小孩惊慌失措地叫起来，还紧张地探身向冰窟窿张望。罗盛教的心一下绷紧了，抓起棉帽往地下一扔，边跑边脱下棉衣棉裤，冲向冰窟窿。寒风夹着雪粒撩起他的单衣，他全然不顾，甩掉脚上大头靴，“扑通”跳进了冰窟窿。水，彻骨地寒冷，罗盛教一跳进水里，就四处摸索，但摸不到。一会儿，他把头钻出水面。这时，他冻得脸色苍白，气喘吁吁。只见他深深地吸了口气后，马上又钻进水里。 仍然是扑了个空。罗盛教第二次钻出水面，身体不由自主地伏在冰窟窿边沿上。他已经精疲力尽，手指僵硬，张不开嘴，喘不过气来，浑身直打颤。边上的三个少年看到还没有救出同伴，急得直跺脚，不住地呼喊。罗盛教咬咬牙又钻进水里。 落水少年崔莹的上身终于露出水面，他已经昏迷了。罗盛教站在水里，用肩膀使劲托住他。崔莹左右摇晃，一起一落，罗盛教挣扎着坚持住。崔莹终于睁开眼，两手乱抓，好不容易抓住了冰窟窿的边沿，眼看就要爬上冰面，突然“哗啦”一声，冰塌了，连人带冰又掉进冰水里，冰窟窿越来越大。当崔莹再次被托出水面时，冰窟窿边沿又塌了一大块，崔莹又落入水里。 闻讯赶来的宋惠云不会游泳，站在冰上干着急，见此情形，立刻赶到村口，抱起一根废电线杆，奋力向河边拖去。这时，水中浮起的罗盛教，脸色紫里透黑，嘴里吐着水泡，看样子再也坚持不住了。他的身体冻僵了，但一颗心是火热的，他还没来得及平息一下，又艰难地吸了口气，一抿嘴沉入水底。这段时间显得那么漫长，冰上的人都屏住了呼吸，崔莹终于被顶出水面。他死死地抱住宋惠云伸过去的电线杆子，人们把他拉出冰窟窿。 崔莹得救了，可是罗盛教没有上来。 纷纷赶来的人们一齐动手，砸开冰层，捞起了罗盛教。无数个声音在呼唤“罗盛教！”“罗盛教！”罗盛教却没有回答。军医赶来，给他打针抢救，朝鲜老大娘用自采的土药往他嘴里灌……人们用尽一切办法都无济于事。罗盛教的心脏停止了跳动，眼睛微微地合上，脸上的表情显得那么安详。 石田里的朝鲜乡亲们再三恳求志愿军某部同意他们按照朝鲜人民最隆重的礼节来安葬烈士。朝鲜老大娘将预留给自己的墓地献给罗盛教，精心为他缝制殓衣。人们准备最珍贵的祭札。漫山遍野挖来嫩绿的小松苗栽在墓地…… 次日中午，少年们抬着烈士的遗体朝墓地走去。There was silence all around.全村男女老幼紧跟在后面送葬。当烈士遗体被抬进墓地时，人们的泪水再也抑制不住了，痛哭声在山林中连成一片。 40多位村民跪在墓前默哀。 朝鲜劳动党村支部书记指着冰封的河，声音颤抖，深情地说：“在这条河里，志愿军为救我们一个孩子献出了宝贵的生命；也在这条河里，美国侵略者用我们亲人的尸体染红了河水。乡亲们，让我们世世代代都记住罗盛教的名字吧！” 朝鲜人民把石田里改名为“罗盛教村”，把烈士献身的那条河改名为“罗盛教河”，把安葬烈士的佛体洞山改名“罗盛教山”，并在山上修筑了庄严雄伟的“罗盛教纪念碑”与“罗盛教纪念亭”。金日成首相为纪念碑亲笔题词：“罗盛教烈士的国际主义精神与朝鲜人
