李振和李振西成了一对离得最近的难兄难弟，两人灰头土脸各带四个团，排成一溜儿向西突击。结果，玩命地干了两个多钟头，伤亡过半，一事无成。看来二线师不解决问题，还得等一线师下来收摊。 李振西真的耐不住了：“这哪行啊，共产党军队这是要咱们的整数啊！” “你呀，沉住气！”李振仍显得蛮有把握：“一六〇师比较弱一点，一八七师下来了准行！等一八七师一到，加个一七七师，我就不信打不过去！” 这时，一辆吉普车疯牛似的冲到三十八军军部门前，车未停稳，王治岐破门而出，步伐乱糟糟地跑到军部，一见李振西就哑着嗓子喊：“怎么搞成这样！下午2点左右，扶风廖凤运的一九一师和扶武之间陈倬的一四七师，都被共产党军队包起来了，军、师、团分割得豆腐干似的，一小块、一小块，你叫我怎么有组织地抵抗呀！全在那里散打，各自为战，一塌糊涂，我是急了眼乘吉普车冲到塬上来的……” 正说着，一一九军司令部的一个参谋歪扣着帽子、满面泥浆跑过来了：“啊呀军座，你怎么跑这里来了，到处找你哩……郭参谋长给共产党军队俘走了，二四四师向扶风撤退时，遭到伏击，两个团打散了，杨伯达团根本还没从武功跑出来，困在里面呢！” 王治岐气呼呼地问：“蒋云台蒋师长呢？” “他呀，那家伙，队伍一撒手，就带着百八十人往渭南方向逃了。” “还有那个谁、谁、谁……陈倬呢，廖凤运呢，有下落吗？”王治岐说话已不利索。 那个参谋告诉王治岐，陈带着一个骑兵团向东南方向冲过去，不知成功与否；廖下落不明。 两人的絮絮叨叨惹火了李振西：“还啰唆个球！想法子收容队伍吧……”话犹未了，忽听不远处杀声震天，解放军从升水坡上了塬。王治岐一看风头不对，吉普车也不要了，一头钻进乱糟糟的士兵队伍中，没命地奔跑。 冲过来的是四军十师二十九团部队。用彭德怀后来一再表扬的话说，四军这回“有很大进步”，“虽然伤亡大一些，但打出来了一个好的战斗作风。”其时，四军的军长是张达志。此人打过恶仗，足智多谋，搞侦察出身，指挥部队很有板眼。四军插到扶风以西围住敌人后，他就给指战员们提出一个口号：“寸土不让，誓与阵地共存亡。”二十九团坚守罗局镇，是这次战役能否全歼渭北敌人三个军的关键，彭德怀的眼睛从早到晚就盯着这个地方，生怕出纰漏。 这就是李振和李振西用二线师没突破又等待一线师企图突破的重点方向。二十九团在这里打退了敌人十多次的轮番冲击，牺牲相当大，战士们就喊着张达志的口号，在前沿跟敌人拼刺刀，没让敌人前进一步。这个团五连最后只剩下五个人，个个身上有伤，班长马春生自告奋勇当指挥，他把五个人编成三组，伤势轻重搭配了一下，每组占一个位置，架一挺机枪，形成火力交叉，就这样，坚守在一个连的阵地，血战了十一个小时，一步不退！ 时间已到7月12日黄昏。中午12点，彭德怀总攻命令已经下达，野战军炮火向渭河北岸敌整个“羊拉屎”阵地狠狠轰击了十多分钟，敌军被打得一片混乱。李振和李振西已经被压缩到一起，也无所谓兵团部或是三十八军军部了，两人就面对面地商议如何收拾残局。 突围无望，一线师等不见踪影。周士第的十八兵团已在正面大张旗鼓地攻打起来，与敌后许光达的二兵团越压越紧，成对攻之势。面对“尸横遍野”，李振问李振西怎么办，李振西说：“由塬上突围已不可能，等一线师来支持到黄昏的计划也已绝望，还能有什么办法，只有渡渭河一条道了！” 李振面带难色：“上游下雨，河水暴涨，无法徒涉，而船一时又搞不到……” “闯吧，没有别的出路呀！”李振西硬着头皮充好汉。
