三十一军在抢渡乌龙江后，不顾疲劳，穿山越岭，四面围击各个山头的敌人，歼灭了很多整营整团的敌人。 敌人由于不熟悉地形，围着大山跑了一天后，发现又转回了原地。这下，他们吓得如惊弓之鸟，欲逃无路，欲守无力，只要听到有人提“解放军”三个字，拔腿就逃。可是，往哪里逃呢？方向不明，粮弹奇缺，建制极度混乱。敌人疲于奔命后，一个个累得躺在地上直喘气时，成了解放军的战利品。解放军不费吹灰之力，将他们一一俘获。 8月23日下午，叶飞接到各部队发来的一份份捷报，神采飞扬地掏出身上的小本本，掐指细算。他兴奋地对韦国清说：“这次福州战役，我们歼灭敌人一个兵团部、两个军部、九个师，近四万人，基本上完成了预定的目标。终于将福州战役圆满地画上了句号！”他收起小本本，侧头问，“我打算下一步越海克厦门，你觉得如何？” 韦国清欣然同意。两人伏在桌上，紧张而仔细地研究，筹划起漳厦战役的方案来。
