Chapter 50 6. Mao Zedong did not believe that what was fought was the U.S. armed forces

In less than 60 hours of fighting in Xuanjiapu and Taixing, more than 3,000 people were annihilated in the 19th Brigade and 57th Regiment of the 83rd Division of Jiang's Reorganized Division, and most of the brigade's Shanpao Battalion and 56th Regiment; There are more than 200 machine guns and a large number of American equipment. In this battle, the Central China Field Army carried out a long-distance surprise attack on the isolated Jiang army. From the advance to the start of the battle, the troops moved secretly and concealed, and the enemy was caught by surprise, making the Jiang army completely in a state of panic.

The 57th Regiment of the Jiang Army was a unit that had participated in the expeditionary force to fight in Burma. The regiment was equipped with sophisticated weapons and strong combat effectiveness. It once clamored: "If the Communist Party takes down Xuanjiabao, then they can carry their guns upside down and enter Nanjing without firing a single bullet." The victory of the first battle in the Soviet Union was the first major victory of the Central China Field Army in the Liberation War, which was of great significance.Because the Central China Field Army is facing an American mechanized army trained by American instructors and reorganized. For such a powerful enemy, whether the Central China Field Army could win the battle, attack and annihilate it was still a question that had not been proved by practice at the time. Therefore, it attracted great attention from the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China and Mao Zedong.

After the battle, Mao Zedong personally drafted a message asking: "Is the 83rd Division what I fought in Taixing and Xuanjiapu? (Army) Where is it now?" "Taizhou rushed to the south to help the 4 regiments that confronted me north of Xuanjiapu, how is it now?" "Is it possible to capture Taizhou?" "You originally planned to concentrate 9 regiments in the direction of Huainan, How is it now?" (July 18, 1946, the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China sent a telegram to Zhang Dingcheng, Deng Zihui, and Tan Zhenlin about the situation in Central Soviet Union)

Regarding the inquiries from the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China and Mao Zedong, Zhang Dingcheng, Deng Zihui, and Tan Zhenlin called the Central Military Commission on July 20 after checking the results of the battle: First, the 19th Brigade of the 83rd Division (formerly the 100th Army) in the Taixing and Xuanjiapu battles was wiped out except for the brigade headquarters that did not participate in the battle. It included 12 mountain guns, 10 rocket launchers, 200 light and heavy machine guns, and 20 mortars. There are still 63 brigades left in this division. This army cooperated with the 57th brigade (74th Army) to regain our Taixing on the 16th, and is now attacking our Huangqiao.

Second, the 26th and 79th brigades of the 49th Division were dispatched to occupy our Linzi and Dingyan on July 15, and entered the suburbs of Rugao on the 17th.Therefore, I moved westward to Rugao, and on the 18th, the main force was dispatched to occupy the line of Linzi, Nanmatang and their return route, and they were all surrounded by me; the reinforcements of the 105th Division were annihilated by me. .It was planned to resolve the fighting on the evening of the 18th, but no report has been received yet. Thirdly, at present, the Soviet Union must fight three times in a row and win. After the end, the troops must rest for a period of time before deciding whether to seize Taizhou or not. (July 20, 1946, Zhang Dingcheng, Deng Zihui, and Tan Zhenlin reported to the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China on the battles in Xingjiabao and Xuanjiapu)

Mao Zedong was very happy after seeing the battle report, and immediately telegraphed Su Yu: "After the Taixing battle is over, organize the troops immediately and prepare to fight four or five more big battles."
