Chapter 41 The relationship between the Anti-Japanese War and foreign aid

——Preface to the English translation of "On Protracted War" (January 20, 1939) My friends in Shanghai are translating my "On Protracted War" into English. Of course I am happy to hear that, because the great Chinese War of Resistance is not only a matter of China, the East, but also the world. In democratic countries such as Britain, the United States, and France, the general public, including all progressive people from all walks of life, sympathized with China's war of resistance and opposed Japanese imperialist aggression against China, except for some diehard parties who opposed China's war of resistance.Regarding the stubborn party, some are stubborn and have always sympathized with the Japanese warlords; some do not understand the inevitable law of China's war of resistance, and the inevitable law that Japan will lose and China will win after a difficult journey, so they are pessimistic and disappointed and are unwilling to help China , I think there will be such people. If my book can give such people the opportunity to understand the truth of the matter, of course it is my hope.As for the majority of people who sympathize with China's War of Resistance, there may still be a few people who still do not understand the truth of China's War of Resistance. Even though they sympathize with the War of Resistance, there is also depression. This kind of depression of sympathy, especially we should explain it.This little book of mine was written in May 1938, and since it deals with the entire process of the Sino-Japanese War, its time span is long.As for whether the arguments in the book are correct, all the experience of the War of Resistance in the past has proved it, and future experience will also prove it.After the fall of Wuhan and Guangzhou, the Anti-Japanese War is moving towards a new stage-a new stage that is beneficial to China and unfavorable to Japan. This stage is the stage of confrontation between the enemy and ourselves. The enemy is forced to end its strategic offensive and turn to strategic conservatism, and we end our strategic retreat (the main force, not the guerrillas) and turn to a strategic stalemate because of our resolute resistance and increase in strength. This situation is coming soon.In the new stage, my entire task is to prepare for the counter-offensive. This kind of preparation may take a long time, but we have all the courage and energy to make this kind of preparation. We must and will certainly be able to drive Japanese imperialism out of China. In the great war of resistance, China basically relies on China to defeat the enemy by itself, and China's power is also being mobilized. Not only will it become an invincible force, but it will also overwhelm the enemy and drive it out. There is no doubt about it.But at the same time, it needs the cooperation of foreign aid. Our enemy is a worldwide enemy, and China's war of resistance is a worldwide war of resistance. History has shown that the view of isolated war is incorrect. In the democracies of Britain and the United States, there are still isolated views. They do not know that if China is defeated, Britain, the United States and other countries will not be able to rest in peace. So I hope this book can arouse some sympathy among English-speaking countries, for the benefit of China and the benefit of the world.China is fighting the war amidst difficulties, but the flames of war among the world's major powers are approaching day by day, and it is impossible for any country to stay out of it.We agree with President Roosevelt's [1] declaration to defend democracy, but we firmly oppose Chamberlain's [2] retreat policy towards Western fascist countries. Chamberlain still retains a cowardly attitude toward Japan.I hope that the people of Britain and the United States will take an active role in urging their governments to adopt new policies against aggressive wars, for the sake of China and for the sake of Britain and the United States themselves.
