Chapter 65 Speech at the Banquet Celebrating the Signing of the Agreement on the Measures for the Peaceful Liberation of Tibet

(May 24, 1951) For hundreds of years, there has been disunity among the various ethnic groups in China, especially the disunity between the Han and Tibetan ethnic groups, and the disunity among the Tibetan ethnic groups. This is the result of the rule of the reactionary Qing government and the Chiang Kai-shek government, as well as the result of imperialism sowing dissension. Now, the forces led by the Dalai Lama[1], the forces led by the Panchen Erdeni[2] and the Central People's Government are all united. This was achieved only after the Chinese people overthrew imperialist and domestic reactionary rule. This solidarity is fraternal solidarity, not one that oppresses the other. This unity is the result of the joint efforts of all parties. In the future, on the basis of this unity, our various nationalities will achieve development and progress in all aspects, including politics, economy and culture.
