Chapter 90 On the division of three worlds[1]

(February 22, 1974) Mao Zedong: I hope that the third world will unite. The population of the third world is huge! Kaunda: Yes. Mao: Who is the First World? K: I think it should be the world of those exploiters and imperialists. Mao: What about the second world? Card: Those who have become revisionists. Mao: I think the United States and the Soviet Union are the first world. The centrists, Japan, Europe, Australia, Canada, are the second world. We are the third world. Card: I agree with Mr. Chairman's analysis. Chairman Mao: The United States and the Soviet Union had more atomic bombs and were richer. The second world, Europe, Japan, Australia, and Canada, do not have so many atomic bombs, nor are they so rich, but they are richer than the third world.Do you see this explanation?

Card: Mr. Chairman, your analysis is very precise, very accurate. Mao: Let’s do some research. Card: I think we can reach an agreement without research, because in my opinion, this analysis is already very accurate. Mao: The third world has a large population. Card: Exactly. Mao: Except for Japan, Asia is the third world. The whole of Africa is the third world, and so is Latin America.
