Chapter 1 Prologue

organization from history 许倬云 648Words 2018-03-18
It is a companion book to another book, "Leadership Through History".The latter is a record of three days of lectures and discussions, while the former is a transcript from four dictations. This book does not have the discussion questions and answers of the book "Leadership", but there are some original texts of cited documents. This is the difference between the two books. The contents of the two books are complementary. In Leadership, the focus is on the style and characteristics of leaders. In this book, the focus is on the structure of organizations and the human and material resources upon which they depend. There are only people without organization, and no talent can be used. Just as there is a driver without a car, the driver cannot gallop. If there is only structure, without resources, the structure is also empty, just as there are cars without horses, and the cars are just parked.

In the sixteen chapters of this book, from the pre-Qin period to the Qing Dynasty, several prime ministers were found as clues in each generation. These characters are capable and have credit. They are equivalent to the executives of today's enterprises, presiding over decision-making and execution. However, the topic of discussion is still organization and system. The chapters of each dynasty actually have some specific themes. The various festivals of the Zhou Dynasty discuss how to design a scale that can be operated when starting a business. The sections of the Qin and Han Dynasties focus on the expansion and deepening of a complex organization. The chapters of the Three Kingdoms and the Southern and Northern Dynasties describe the reorganization after the disintegration of a complex organization, especially the integration of ethnic groups during the reorganization process. The theme of the festivals in the Tang Dynasty was remonstrance, because the power of decision-making was no longer in the hands of Zaifu. In the Song and Ming dynasties, the theme is about how to reform the already formed organization from the inside to increase efficiency. The festivals of the Qing Dynasty focused on the development of new resources in the transformation stage of the organization.

This book draws on the experience that can be used for reference and chewing from the history of governing the country in ancient China.Today, the resources possessed by civil society and the difficulties it faces are as rich and complex as the resources and affairs handled by ancient government organizations. Business management, to borrow the metaphor of Tai Shigong, has something in common with governing the country and using soldiers. Moreover, governing a big country is like cooking a small fish. As long as it is a human organizational system, some structural problems will emerge. This book discusses the ancient Zaifu's experience in governing the country, and it is only by way of example.
