Chapter 31 I wrote the inside and outside of "Lenovo Bureau"—for the writing of "Underpants"

It has been nearly half a year since the publication of "Lenovo Bureau".Book sales are said to be based on the first three months. Judging from the momentum of "Lenovo Bureau" in the first three months, it is neither as good nor as bad as imagined.Everything was as smooth as water, slow and steady. Time passed away quickly, and the grievances and grievances between "Lenovo Bureau" and Lenovo are rarely remembered today, and even if they are remembered, few people are willing to talk about it. Everything is because it broke the "hidden rules" and opened up The real veil puts a pair of underpants on the already naked "commercial history writing", which enables people to rediscover the bottom line of shame and know the difference between wearing a pair of underpants and dangling around.

As for the origin with Lenovo, I have described it in the postscript of "Lenovo Bureau". In order to clarify the so-called truth, let me add more details here: On June 11, 2001, after Lenovo formed an alliance with AOL, two colleagues and I wrote an article for the Economic Observer called "Lenovo's Gambling Life".The idea of the article was good, and the news headline was sensational. After publication, it attracted a lot of attention. Under the leadership of the general manager of the newspaper, I even passively "communicated" with Lenovo Group several times. However, this incident passed quickly, and it had almost no impact on me except for writing a manuscript about Lenovo.

Five months later, on November 12, 2001, I received an e-mail from Zhang Tao, deputy general manager of the public relations department of Legend Holdings, a person I had never met or had any contact with.On the first day, my teacher and good friend Qian Gang mentioned to me that Zhang Tao would contact me, asking me to make some suggestions on Lenovo's ongoing affairs. Zhang Tao's email introduced a set of "series books", saying: "Lenovo...in the course of seventeen years of hard work, Lenovo has broken through the 'four barriers', walked through the road of high-tech industrialization, and achieved great success in management and management. It has achieved fruitful results in operation. To this end, Lenovo’s senior leaders have discussed and decided to publish a series of books about Lenovo...to make a historical summary of the inside and characterize some major issues in the history of Lenovo’s development.”

Zhang Tao introduced the progress of the "series" and said that he plans to invite several consultants (including Qian Gang), "It is planned to invite journalists who are well-known in the industry, have an IT background, understand the actual operation of the enterprise, and have solid writing skills to fully understand Lenovo's historical materials. Under the premise, write relevant manuscripts". After I received the email, I followed Qian Gang's "instructions" and quickly contacted Zhang Tao.We made an appointment to meet in Lenovo's small cafeteria one evening.Zhang Tao is a talkative person. We seem to have similar reading backgrounds, and we have almost unanimous judgments on writing.I remember we chatted very speculatively that day.

In addition to me, the invited reporters included Li Yong, editor-in-chief of "Global Entrepreneur" and Xiong Bo from "China Youth Daily".The former is my old colleague when I worked at Southern Weekly, while the latter is a new friend. Later, by coincidence, Li Yong announced early on because of his busy work that he would only read files and not write books. Xiong Bo persisted until July. In July 2002, because he was entrusted with the important task of CCTV's "Economic Information Network", his work was also very busy. After the test, I also chose to quit, so I became the only choice.

In the end, I went to Qingdao, and used Hisense as the blueprint for my writing to train my personal business history writing. "Hisense History: A Key Moment of Reconstruction in Ten Years" was completed in February 2003 and published by Hainan Publishing House in July. On the day when "Hisense History" was finished, I had a little more confidence in writing this book. The entire year of 2002 was quickly consumed, and a large amount of time was taken up by the writing of "History of Hisense". In 2003, I moved to Shanghai for a short time. When I returned to Beijing to read Lenovo’s archives, I encountered SARS. Although it was not a blessing, it enabled me to concentrate on reading Lenovo’s archives and discuss writing with my friends.

That summer, I finished reading Lenovo's archives and interviewing key figures. In late August, I participated in the training of Legend Holdings' "Into the Model". Before the training, President Liu Chuanzhi sent me a message, asking me to wear formal clothes and mix among the trainees.I did not do badly, even participated in their outward bound training and the final exam, because I read the Lenovo file, I got 99 points in the exam, it is said that I tied for the first place with President Xu Guobing of Zhiqin Meiji, but it is just a legend, I did not for proof. In September, I went to work at the Beijing News.In a state of busyness, excitement, and idealism, I found the joy of writing.I start to write. The writing went on for a long time because there was so little quiet time to write every day.

In March 2004, I finally finished writing the last word and let out a long breath. My inner depression was finally relieved. The sky is high and blue, and the spring is warm, which is a great feeling. In the early spring of 2004, I saw the debate on Lenovo's road from the Internet. I have no intention of getting involved in this debate. Even if I disagree with their opinions, I also want to defend their right to express. But that was a worthless argument, a mang-like argument. A person who has nothing to do with Lenovo can express his opinions unscrupulously, but how can he think about growth from the perspective of an enterprise? If you don't think about China's situation, China's great history, and don't think about the accidents of history itself, you won't draw objective and fair conclusions, but you will only design the idea of round heaven and earth as stipulated in "Zhou Ri".

My book is finished, the task has been completed, and I feel relieved; although Lenovo seemed to be quite worried about me before, and invited Mr. Ling Zhijun to write another book. The facts are not easy, and the next negotiation with Lenovo is extremely difficult.Once, President Liu Chuanzhi and some officials of Legend Holdings "confirmed" the content of the manuscript, and the two sides had extremely serious differences: I advocated "bringing views with historical facts" and strived to restore the true colors of history; "historical facts", seeking evidence to support established historical views.I'm guessing President Yoo wasn't too happy with my use of the concept of "bureau".In short, all Lenovo officials seconded President Liu's proposal.Since I insisted on my point of view, I had no choice but to agree to write another book and publish it to ensure the integrity of "Lenovo Bureau".

This is a painful process. In the middle of this process, an official of Legend Holdings invited me to dinner and asked me if I could give up writing. He made three suggestions, roughly as follows: Compared with his reputation and previous achievements, Mr. Ling Zhijun is more competitive. The book I wrote will come out later, and Teacher Ling’s book will come out first, so as not to conflict between the two books; can you compensate me for a sum of money so that I can give up writing; can you use a sum of money to buy my "Lenovo Bureau" and it will never be published .I rejected his suggestion, and after writing a long letter to Mr. Liu Chuanzhi, I announced that I would give up writing "imperial books" other than "Lenovo Bureau".President Liu wrote back to express his understanding of my mood and choice.

Later, I read the draft of my letter again, and there is a paragraph in it that says: (Dinning with the aforementioned officials from Lenovo) After the breakup, I called Zhang Tao and said angrily: "Ms. Ling is not my father, why should I wrong myself and let him go out first?" As for the compensation, Mr. XX even wanted to negotiate the price with me at the dinner table.I told Mr. X that I had a stable and good income from The Beijing News, and I was not short of that money. If it was for the money, I wouldn't have spent three years and quit my job to write this book.I told him that during the period when I resigned, my salary income was more than 200,000 yuan.A person's hard work and sincerity cannot be bought with money! They broke up unhappy that day, and Mr. X's goal was obviously not achieved. It is understood that he later reported to Mr. Tang that Xiao Chi is not authentic, and he used to speak awkwardly. How could he be so fluent that day?Obviously, they came prepared, and had long thought of publishing "Lenovo Bureau" secretly. Mr. XX has no relationship with me. He doesn't know that I stutter when I don't drink, but I express very clearly after drinking; he will use threats and lures, and I will use my only advantage to blackmail him. The threats and compromises between each other lasted for nearly a year.Later, after a lot of negotiations with Lenovo, I was finally allowed to use Lenovo files in "Lenovo Bureau" (so I signed a confidentiality agreement before), on the condition that "Lenovo Bureau" should be published after the publication of Teacher Ling Zhijun's book; , Lenovo also gave me a small amount of compensation (40,000 yuan), part of which was used to pay for the transportation expenses incurred during the interview agreed in advance, and the other part was used to compensate for the losses caused by the late publication of "Lenovo Bureau". In January 2005, Ling Zhijun's "Lenovo Wind and Cloud" was published. I followed the oral agreement and submitted the manuscript to Lenovo for "verification of historical facts", and tried to obtain the authorization of "Lenovo Bureau" to use Lenovo files.Because it is limited to verifying historical facts, "Lenovo Bureau" can guarantee its independence rather than a book customized by a "customer"; I can also at least maintain the minimum conscience of a writer-for myself and the text itself, for history and The conscience of fact itself. Looking back now, why I was so angry at the beginning, unless there were three reasons-the worthlessness of my hard work; the counterattack against being scorned; and the insistence on the last moral bottom line. I have a calculation in my heart: if it takes so long to earn a sum of money, it means that my hard work in the past three years has yielded nothing, and the three years have only turned into money, and there has been no progress in writing.I am still young, and there are plenty of opportunities to make money in an upright manner, why bother to insult myself so much? For me, the biggest achievement of "Lenovo Bureau" is not how much reward I have received in this world, but that I have found a path suitable for my own business history writing, which has revised and enriched my "commercial history writing standards".The most important thing is that I never gave up my dignity and always wore a pair of underwear for my fragile heart. I think I should be proud of myself. In the postscript of "Lenovo Bureau", I said: In addition, I think I will most likely write another book with Lenovo as the research object.Lenovo, as a representative company and a star of China's manufacturing industry, is undoubtedly excellent. Its growth process is bumpy and tortuous, its management and culture are intricate, and its personnel changes and concept changes are all worthy of attention. However, most of the research on Lenovo over the years has been either irrational accusations and abuse or unprincipled praise and flattery, which is a great harm to Lenovo and the public.Conducting a good-faith analysis and constructive criticism of Lenovo, urging its management to be more rational, its management to be more perfect, its culture to be healthier, and to complete the leap from excellence to excellence may be exactly what I should do.After reading Lenovo's various confidential files and writing "Lenovo Bureau", I feel that this is my inescapable responsibility and obligation. Such a book was not published, but a book called "Liu Chuanzhi Said: Doing the Right Thing" was published instead. The title was originally set to be "Liu Shuo", which was a suggestion to Lenovo before it had a bad relationship with Lenovo. Later, Lenovo did not publish this book, and I liked the name very much, so I wrote this book.Similarly, in order to abide by the so-called "confidentiality agreement" with Lenovo, I also did not use the materials in Lenovo's archives—except for those already used by "Lenovo Bureau" and "Lenovo Wind and Cloud".In fact, I am not very interested in "Liu Chuanzhi said", what I really want to do is "I said". I want to say something and then do something. That's all.
