In 1956, I stepped into the gate of Beijing University of Political Science and Law, the predecessor of our school.Today, I have coached for 40 years. In the 40 years, more than half of the time was not engaged in the law major I studied, and when I went to the law forum again, I was nearly half a century old.In recent years, I have often been in contact with foreign scholars. Professors in their 40s are already full of books, and unprovoked political campaigns have missed my golden academic years.The lack of solid and profound academic foundation is the biggest deficiency of teachers.I don't read as many books as young students, so how can I teach and guide others. The biggest regret of 40 years of coaching is this.

I remember an article I read: When I was studying in school, I was trembling and felt that I didn’t understand anything; when I graduated from college, I was full of ambition and felt that I knew everything; But I feel like I don't understand anything.Of course, this kind of life mentality is a bit absolute, but it is still a trajectory.At first I couldn’t understand why the ancients taught us that there was such a word “shame” in the virtues of “propriety, righteousness, honesty and shame”. What kind of virtue is shame!Only later did I understand that those who are ashamed are not enough. Know the shame and then be brave."Shame" is written instead of "courage" in the virtues, probably because courage can be the courage of ordinary people, and the courage to know shame is the greatest courage.This is the driving force of people. Only those who do not forget the national humiliation can work hard to serve the motherland; only those who do not forget their own shame can work hard to improve themselves, especially in coaching.Coaching is like life, it is always inseparable from the pursuit of truth, goodness and beauty.

Truth is the truth, pursue the truth, only obey the truth, and only bow to the truth!Truth has no class nature, and it cannot be said that the proletariat will necessarily grasp the truth.Subordinates can obey their superiors, but it does not mean that the truth must be in the hands of the superiors, and the minority obeying the majority does not mean that the truth must be on the side of the majority.The truth cannot be followed blindly. Only through the process of comparison, analysis, thinking, and identification can one get closer to the truth. One voice and one thinking cannot get the truth.Really true love, pure love, without hypocrisy, without artificiality.Words can express true feelings, and language can express true feelings even more.An article may be more refined and full of truth than a class, but listening to a class may be more effective than reading an article. The reason is that the teacher is teaching with emotion. How is it different from writing an article!The teacher's lectures are still the burst of true enthusiasm, the heart is vented, the truth is conveyed, and the true feelings are felt!

Kindness means perfection. A class is like a work of art. A work of art must be meticulously crafted, and there should be no flaws or redundancies;A teacher is like an artist. Every class and every work of art maintains the society's evaluation of himself.The shoddy products made by workers affect the reputation of trademarks and products, while the shoddy products made by teachers affect his own reputation.Kindness is style. Articles must have their own style, and lectures must also have their own style. Without style, they are the same, they are equal to others, and they are "chewing the buns that others have chewed".And chewing buns that have been chewed by others is not delicious!

Beauty is the teacher's morality. The most important thing about the teacher's morality is to love his teacher's profession, but nowadays there are too few volunteers who are teachers in colleges and universities.Some of my PhD students are from Taiwan.One day, each talked about their post-graduation aspirations. Many doctoral students in mainland China aim to work in government agencies and companies after graduation, while most of the doctoral students in Taiwan regard being able to teach in universities as their first choice.In fact, a Taiwanese doctoral student who is about to graduate has also worked hard to get a teaching position at Tunghai University. Only those who love their profession can truly have their own professional ethics.

Only those who take the teaching profession as an honor will devote their efforts to educating people.Beauty is also temperament.Universities are the highest institutions of learning. The campus cultural temperament I saw in some so-called Ivy League universities such as Harvard University and Columbia University in the United States, the civilized temperament of the students, especially the graceful temperament of the professors, are indeed incomparable to ordinary citizens and businessmen. .Only teachers who are highly civilized can bring the civilization of students and the campus. A university professor should be an example of civilization, the embodiment of knowledge, and have the temperament and demeanor he should have!

Forty years of coaching is coming to an end. Of course, I have experienced ups and downs, trials and tribulations, but for the path I chose, I have no regrets in this life!If I were to choose a career again in the next life, I would still take being a university professor as my first goal.
