Home Categories political economy What is missing in China's economy? High-level think tanks solve the problem
I have to admit that writing and publishing a book is a tough job. On the one hand, the early stage of this book (from the interview to the first draft) lasted more than a year, and it was "boiled" out of time.As a rather special economic research topic, its birth process is not planning or writing in the conventional sense. Moreover, once the book is written, people may not be particularly concerned when the wonderful insights of more than a dozen academic masters are presented to readers in different categories.Behind this, how the agenda setters used to contact, ask questions, dialogue, sort out, write, and return visits step by step-in fact, the whole process is far more trivial than this.

On the other hand, the later stage of this book (from revision to arrangement) also experienced several twists and turns, not only to "stay up" the night, but also to "stay up" the heart.Although in the sense of the first draft, it can be considered that this book was serialized in stages in the magazine in advance, but in order to truly realize the transition from Koni Katazuo’s magazine column to a self-contained book monograph, one must go through a difficult process of turning from a chrysalis into a butterfly evolutionary process. It is conceivable that the final grand economic story woven into shape and handed over to readers is a collection of passion and ideals.

This collection just answered the title of the book I finally decided on: "What's missing in China's economy?"—the spirit of innovation and rationality. More than a year ago, when the financial tsunami on the other side of the ocean spread to China's real economy, and traditional manufacturing companies were devastated, apart from sorrow and worry, I was also curious: what would those prestigious economists, jurists and thinkers think about This once-in-a-century financial crisis and the Chinese-style crisis of relieving internal and external imbalances, what kind of opinions will they have?

At the end of the year, reporter Zhang Xinhua proposed to me: Can the "High-end Interview" column be made into a branded column for you to talk to economists? Curiosity about everyone’s ideas, coupled with the deep-seated ideas that have been lingering in my mind for a long time, and the determination to create a series of columns to enhance the influence of the magazine, made me agree immediately. The original intention was to define the theme of the year: "Ask for Crisis Strategies" from top economic thinkers. This also means that from now on, I will insist on talking to one person in each issue.

Xinhua fulfilled its mission and was willing to be my assistant. In the early stage, I contacted the interviewees, issued interview outlines, and agreed on a time for the conversation...repeated invitations until everything was settled; at the scene of the conversation, I did not forget to capture the moment when I collided with economists; Raw materials——Of course, when any of the above-mentioned links is really "unsure", this well-deserved host of the column will not forget to ask me for "emergency help". As for me, I repeatedly checked the recording materials he sorted out, and used the economics knowledge and related theories learned in the Peking University classroom and after class to do a good job of checking from the whole to the details. Adjustment. In order to balance the professionalism and readability of the dialogue, I often write all night for days and nights. After repeated combing, refinement, deliberation, and finally repaired into a document. It can be said that the manuscripts that are finally displayed in front of readers often originate from the dialogue between me and you, and go beyond the dialogue scene.

Frankly speaking, since I accomplished the birth and continuation of this column out of curiosity, I never thought of standing on the shoulders of giants. But my friends quit. Some time ago, Lin Kun found the editor of Motie Books and said that he would help me publish the column into a book to continue its social value. This is indeed a good thing. All good things take time. Now, the book has been completed, and the gratification goes without saying, and the thanks are indispensable. First of all, I must thank every scholar who supports me and accepts dialogues. Their broad minds and extraordinary wisdom are unforgettable and I will benefit from them all my life.

They are: Jiang Ping, a famous jurist in mainland China, famous economists Mao Yushi, Zhang Zhuoyuan, Xia Bin, Liu Wei, Wu Xiaoqiu, Wei Jie, Sheng Hong, Bai Chongen, Ai Feng, Zhang Wenkui, Wei Jianing, Huang Guitian; Economist, 2001 Nobel Laureate in Economics, former Senior Vice President of the World Bank Joseph E Stiglitz (Joseph E Stiglitz), American Merton Miller (Nobel Laureate in Economics) Research Award Chen Zhiwu, a tenured professor of financial economics at the Yale School of Management. (Note: The above rankings are in no particular order) In domestic and foreign academic circles, any one of the above-mentioned list is a leader and authority in their respective fields. The book in front of me is a concentrated display of the essence of each of you.

Among them, I would like to thank my good teacher and friend, the economist Professor Xia Bin who wrote the preface for this book.At the Development Research Center of the State Council, even though he holds the important position of director of the financial institute, he modestly calls me "colleague" and "little brother".Just last month, he was personally appointed by Premier Wen Jiabao as a counselor of the State Council. I would like to thank my alma mater - the School of Journalism and Communication of Northwest University of Political Science and Law and the School of Economics of Peking University. The former gave me the necessary qualities as a media person, and the latter allowed me to stand higher and see more clearly in the professional field.

Thanks to my teachers, especially Dean Liu Wei, Associate Dean Huang Guitian, and professors He Xiaofeng, Li Xinyu, Wang Shuguang, etc. of the School of Economics, Peking University. They taught me tirelessly, and guided me, who was halfway studying for a graduate program, to shift from focusing on academic research to devotion.Special thanks to Dr. Li Ming, Deputy Director of the Information Center of the Development Research Center of the State Council. As my immediate boss, he can always combine respect and trust with strict requirements, making work sacred and fun.The process of this book from column to monograph is just a shortened version of the process of sincere cooperation with him.

During the early interviews, I received special pointers from scholars such as Fan Gang, Li Daokui, Qin Hui, Cai Dingjian, Wu Si, Xu Zhangrun, Zhang Ming, Ren Yuling, Tang Min, Ding Ningning, Xiang Songzuo, as well as Han Zhongliang, Liu Lijian, Feng Ke , Wen Guanyin, Wu Fei, Ouyang Junshan, Li Li, Chen Jianli, Zhu Zhongyuan, Yang Jian, Cheng Hongjin, Hui Lixin, Feng Xiaopeng, Wei Xiaoying, Gong Jianhui, Song Lijuan, Huang Jielei, Zhou Weiyun, Song Shoushan and other friends' selfless help.I can only thank them for their long-term encouragement and support. This monograph is also a testimony of our great love. Here, I would like to express my deep gratitude to the parents who gave us life and happiness.
