Chapter 3 fool himself

Our Signature Dishes 斯坦利·艾林 10526Words 2018-03-18
Fool's Mate, a chess term, refers to the way in which black checkmates white as quickly as possible while following the rules, also known as "two-step kill".This type of game is usually named because of the extremely weak white players, and it mainly occurs in beginners' games. That night, George Henick came home from get off work with a strange excitement, his normally dark cheeks glowed red, and his eyes sparkled behind rimless glasses.Instead of carefully taking off his rain boots and arranging them neatly on the bamboo mat in the corner of the porch, as he did in the past, he roughly pulled off the shoes and threw them aside casually. Then, without taking off his coat and hat, he unpacked the package in his arms and took out a small, flat suitcase. He opened the case, and Louise saw a modest chess set on a gray-green velvet plinth.

"Isn't it beautiful?" said George, stroking the pieces lovingly. "Look at their workmanship: nothing ostentatious, you know what I mean, simple, clean, like a chess piece. The white pieces are ivory. Yes, the sunspot is made of ebony, all handcrafted." Louise narrowed her eyes and asked, "How much did you pay for this thing?" "I didn't pay for it," said George. "I didn't buy it. Mr. Orlix gave it to me." "Orrix?" Louise asked, "that weird old man you brought home for dinner last time? Just sitting there staring at us like a cat trying to eat a canary. If you hadn't kept talking, I'm afraid he wouldn't have spoken a word all night."

"Oh, Louise!" "Don't shout 'Oh, Louise' here! I thought I'd made myself clear about him. Also, can I ask why this kind Mr. Orriques suddenly thought of sending you Is it such a thing?" "This..." George was a little embarrassed to say, "You also know that he is seriously ill and will retire in a few months, so I took over most of his work. Today is his last day to work, this is an expression Thank you for the gift. He said he hoped to give me the best thing, so he chose this pair of chess that he loves the most.” "Mr. Orlix is so generous." Louise said coldly, "If he really wants to compensate you for the time and effort you have spent on him, why didn't he think that it would be more appropriate to send something practical?"

"What? I just wanted to do him a favor, Louise. And if he offered me money or anything, I wouldn't take it." "You are so stupid." Louise sneered, "Okay, pack up your crap, put it aside, and get ready to eat. Dinner is ready." She turned and walked toward the kitchen, George following her, reassuring, "Louise, you know, Mr. Orriques also said some very interesting things." "yes?" "Well, he said, some people in this world have chess in their lives—but they don't know until they're good at it. I thought, why don't we both..."

She stopped suddenly, turned to face him, put her hands on her buttocks, and said, "You mean that I finish cleaning the house every day, come back from shopping, make hot meals for you, and finish sewing and mending." After that, I will sit down and learn how to play chess with you! George Hernik, you are almost fifty, and your mind is full of strange ideas." George went back to the hall and took off his coat, and suddenly realized that he had always followed the rules and had never done anything inappropriate for his age. At least with Louise's tireless reminder, it was difficult to go out of the way.The first time I heard such a nagging was a few months after the wedding, when he was about to turn thirty and wanted to start his own business. He's heard the same words several times a year since, for various reasons. But as he got to know Louise better, the number of times he was scolded gradually decreased.

The crux of the matter was that Louise was always one step ahead of him, and before he could react, Louise had clearly raised her objections. For example, starting a business by herself, she said that he would lose a stable job; for example, having children, she said that they are in a difficult situation and it is not suitable for them at present (Louis feels that they have been in a difficult situation); She insisted on buying the whole house at once. She also had odd insistences, such as adamant against entertaining at home, refusing to read the books he recommended, and not tuning the radio to the symphony channel.Maybe we can also add today's incident, resolutely not learning to play chess.

Regarding these things, her explanation is: Treating guests is troublesome and expensive, the printing is too small to hurt her eyes, the symphony gives her a splitting headache, and as for playing chess, it seems that her reason is that she has no time. Before the marriage, George recalls sadly, it was not the way it was. They have a group of friends when they have nothing to do, and when it comes to books, music, or anything related, she joins in with joy and interest. Now, the only thing she likes to do is to sit knitting a sweater every night while listening to funny programs on the radio.

Of course, she may also use the excuse that she is uncomfortable. She always said that she was in pain all over her body, and the vivid description of the pain made George feel the pain too, and felt that he was in pain too.The medicine box at home is full, and there are no heavy medicines. This is the complete opposite of their family’s recipes. And every month, Louise has to buy medicine according to a long prescription prescribed by the doctor. In George's view, it is probably "a woman's thing". Even so, George would be the first to speak well of Louise.Putting those troubles aside, Louise is indeed a good wife in a man's mind.George's salary was not high, but she had saved penny by penny, and now they had fifteen thousand dollars in their account. But this is a secret between the two of them. No matter who chats with Louise outside, she will say that her family lives in poverty, which embarrasses George every time.Louise's point is that making it look like you have as little as possible is one of the best ways to save money. If a penny saved was a penny earned, she had made nearly as much in her way as George had over the years.Although this thought did not lessen George's embarrassment, it concealed it under a respect for Louise's wit and housekeeping.

Speaking of Louise's advantages, I'm afraid it's more than that. She keeps the house spotless at all times, irons every piece of clothing carefully, and cares about his health at all times. It seems that George would ignore the daily chores and be grateful for having such a wife. It is not difficult to understand why he wanted to invite her to do it. own chess mate. From the moment he received the pieces, he was fascinated by chess. He also admitted that he was somewhat aggrieved by the fact that he had not been able to play chess all the time. One night, with the loud sound of the tape recorder in his ears and the movement of the sweater needles flying up and down in his wife's hands, George studied the chessboard carefully, and suddenly realized that only matching the opponent can make the game more interesting. But he didn't dig Louise for it; sarcasm wasn't something George would do.

When Mr. Orriques gave him this chess set, he said that he was always available to give him instructions in chess. But Louise has made it clear that he is not welcome in this family, and has said more than once that no man can enter her house casually and eat the dishes she cooks. Therefore, George simply gave up the idea and turned to books for help.He found a booklet called "Let's Play Chess", which began with an essay inviting everyone to play chess, and then there were many complicated articles.George discovered a new world of chess in the literary world and was amazed by its profoundness and intricacies.

He thought about playing chess when he was eating, thinking about it when drinking water, and thinking about it when he was sleeping. He studied the classic chess positions of living and dead chess masters with his heart, and gradually, even if it was just a small victory, he could recite every move.He learns the opening, middlegame and endgame. He gave up foolhardy and reckless attacks, and was more interested in positional games. He believes that a careful strategy is more lethal and will definitely wipe out the opponent. He chanted some strange names every day: Alekhine, Capablanca, Lasker, Nimzovic, and he pursued them, walking through the labyrinth of ivory white and sandalwood black, savoring each New discovery. Still, there was one void that could not be filled: no rivals. There is no real opponent of flesh and blood to test his chess skills.Sometimes, when he was looking at the book at hand and thinking about how to take the next step, he would suddenly think of this matter. There should be another person sitting on the opposite side of the chessboard, who was also paying attention to this move, thinking about how to reverse the situation and destroy the next step. This step is offensive. This longing grew stronger, and he couldn't wait to see a hand reach out to answer him from across the chessboard; especially when Louise's shadow was suddenly reflected on the wall, or when the wood pile in the fireplace collapsed. It will escalate into a surprise, and George will seem to be possessed, and suddenly raise his head to look at the empty chair opposite, expecting that there will be someone sitting there. After a while, the appearance of the person opposite gradually became clear. It was a man who was quietly meditating, and he looked very similar to him, with the same gray hair and rimless glasses that would slide down the bridge of his nose when he looked down at the chessboard. The man was slightly better at chess than he was; not so good that he couldn't beat it at all, it was just that George had to fight as hard as he could to win occasionally. In addition, George has one more expectation for this opponent: he had better be a little obsessive-compulsive, for example, he regards chess as a ritual and must strictly abide by the rules. He must be good at handling white stones.Bai Zi goes first, so he can always be the attacking side, unless the situation is reversed.George prefers to use black pieces. He prefers to avoid the drive or attack of white pieces while slowly building a solid line of defense to resist wave after wave of attacks.George thinks that's the best way to master the game: When you're invulnerable on defense, you're invincible on offense. However, to practice defense, someone must attack first. Finally George thought of a way, and he was proud of his ingenuity. He can set the board, sit on Black's side, and then make the first move for White. Then he counterattacks with black pieces, and then makes another move for White, and so on until the winner is decided. But it didn't take long for the drawbacks of doing so to become apparent.Since he prefers black and fully understands the strategies of both opponents, black can easily win every game. After Baizi ushered in his twentieth fiasco, George collapsed on the chair exhausted. If only after every move, he could completely forget his identity, he thought, so that such problems would not arise! He discovered to his dismay that the idea he had read somewhere before was an ancient proposition in logic that if you cut a giant snake in two, the separate parts would entangle and kill each other to death. He put aside this frustrating association, rearranged the chessboard, stood up and walked over to Bai Zi to sit down. What happens if you switch to White?Winning isn't just about skill at chess, he told himself, it's about how well you know your opponent. This kind of understanding not only refers to what tricks the other party will use, but also includes the other party's character, character and behavior style.George looked solemnly at the empty chair opposite Heifang, lost in thought. Then slowly and carefully took the first step. He then quickly walked around the table and sat down on Black's side again. This feels so much better, he thought as he made an automatic move for Black. Then, with the uncontrollable excitement in his heart, he stood up and sat on the other side of the chessboard. At the same time, he tried to forget Black's train of thought and cleared all the thoughts just now from his mind. "My God, George, what are you doing?" George looked around dreamily and saw Louise staring at him, her lips pursed, her half-knit dress on her lap.It was standard discontent, and whenever she did, George felt like the whole room was frowning at him.He opened his mouth and quickly thought of a good reason. "Why, it's nothing," he said, "it's nothing." "Nothing?!" Louise asked sharply. "You walk around all the time. People will think that there is no comfortable chair at home. You should know, I..." Her voice gradually became quieter, her eyes were glazed over, and her body tensed up because of concentration. It turned out that a funny program on the radio was telling a very vulgar and insulting joke, which caused the audience in the recording studio to burst into thunderous laughter.Seeing the corners of Louise's mouth slightly raised, and picking up the fabric again, George was overjoyed, and quickly seized the opportunity to sit on Heifang's chair. He knew that at this time he was about to make a major discovery; but he didn't know what it was.Can switching seats like this allow him to successfully play two players?independent of each other, becoming two separate entities.Even then George knew he couldn't go on because he couldn't explain to Louise why he got up and sat down and walked around. What if the chessboard could keep turning?George found himself getting more and more excited. Since chess is said to be a purely mental activity—some people say that if chess has a human heart, you don’t even need a chess board—won’t it be enough to just switch roles in your mind? When it was Baizi's turn, George withdrew his attention. Now that he is Bai Fang, he has to think for Bai Fang - not only that, he has to try his best to figure out what Bai Fang is thinking - but the more he struggles to concentrate, the more confused he becomes.Repeatedly, every time he stretched out his hand, he could always clearly think about how Black would go in a while, and at the same time, the joy of victory rushed into his heart. He became obsessed and practiced playing chess in his head every night. He was getting thinner, his haggard face was covered with lines, and Louise would humbly persuade him to eat more at every meal, even if she herself had no appetite for the food. His enthusiasm for work became less and less, and he slowly started to cope with errands. His immediate boss had changed from being surprised and angry at the beginning to expressing his dissatisfaction by shaking his head. But every time such a game was played, every step taken, every effort made George excited, and he felt that he was one step closer to his goal. With the belief that he will win, he believes that one day, he will be able to face the opponent's chess player without any emotion, without likes and dislikes, and without knowing the opponent's plans and strategies. At that time, he will have a chess friend who is more perfect than any flesh and blood opponent. On that day, he will achieve a victory that no one has ever tasted! He was sure of this, every step he took he was sure that victory was ahead, although in fact every time he felt it was just a comfortable pleasure, which relieved his tension as much as possible. He thought happily, the feeling of a man finally coming home from a long day at work and lying on a soft bed at night. It was that feeling, not bad at all. He had accidentally put Heizi in danger just now, but he immediately tried to save himself, using the bishop to neatly put up a defensive formation and directly threatened White. When he looked up to see how White would fight back, he really saw "Bai" sitting in the opposite chair. The other party's ten fingertips touched lightly, and a mocking smile appeared on his mouth. "That's right," said White happily. "George, that's good. I'm surprised." At this moment, George's happy mood was like soap bubbles, which instantly shattered and disappeared when touched by a finger. It wasn't just because of this gentle accusation that irritated him; what he was more concerned about was that "Bai" was completely different from what he had imagined. He didn't want White to be like his twin, but in appearance, White was like the mirror image he saw when he shaved and stared at him every morning in the mirror. However, despite the same appearance, "Bai" is completely different from George. The energy and confidence in his body are almost overflowing.George felt a burst of anger. At this time, he was no longer just lying on the table and playing with boring chess pieces, but more like sitting on the judge's table, using wisdom and enthusiasm to make an important decision. He has no time to think about tomorrow, only pays attention to today and immediate interests, and can always profit in the best way. It was all in White's perfectly tailored clothes, in those graceful, powerful, slender, well-cared-for hands, in the ruthless but gleaming eyes that kept staring at George.George also looked into those eyes. He saw his own reflection and was looking for it clumsily, but he didn't know that what he was looking for was not far away. For days George saw his own reflection in those eyes; maybe it wasn't a reflection.perhaps…… "Bai" took another step, and only then did he recall his thoughts. "It's your turn," "Bai" said lightly, "if you still want to continue." George looked at the chessboard and realized that he was still in a safe position. "Why don't I want to continue? We are currently..." "Equally matched." "Bai" interrupted suddenly, "But you have to look at the long-term: I am trying to win, but you are just trying not to lose." "More or less the same thing," argued George. "It's not the same." "Bai" said, "The proof is that I will win this game, and I will win every game after that." Frightened by such indecent remarks, George protested: "Maloch is a master of defensive tactics, if you are familiar with his game..." "As much as you know Maroch's game, I know as much," said White, "and I can say without any hesitation that if we had the chance to meet, I would still win." George blushed. "You think you're great, don't you?" he said, and was surprised to see that Bai didn't retort, but looked at him with great sympathy. "No," finally "Bai" said, "You think I'm very powerful." Then, as if he had just escaped a well-hidden trap, "Bai" shook his head, showing a slightly awkward sneer, and said: "It's your turn." After a lot of effort, George put down the chaotic thoughts that he couldn't sort out, reorganized his thoughts, and took a step.It took him a while to realize that he was doomed. He lost the second game again, and the next game as well.In the fourth game, he desperately changed his tactics. In the eleventh move, he found an excellent opportunity to launch a counterattack. But he hesitated a little, and then missed the opportunity and lost again. When the game was over, George carefully packed away the pieces. "Come again tomorrow?" he said, completely ignoring Bai's blatant sarcasm. "If nothing gets in my way." George felt a sudden chill of dread. "What's going to get in your way?" He struggled to get the words out. "Bai" picked up the White Queen and slowly rotated it on his fingertips. "Like, Louise. What if she doesn't like you indulging in it?" "Why? Why would she do that? She's never complained about anything so far!" "My good brother, Louise is a very stupid and violent woman..." "Okay, that's enough!" George interrupted him suddenly. "At the same time," "Bai" continued unaffected, as if the topic had never been interrupted, "she is also the head of the family. Throughout the ages, those lords have always established themselves from time to time for no reason. In fact, this An act of sheer vanity—yet as essential to them as breathing." The comment angered George. He summoned up all his courage and boldly retorted: "If you think so, I'm afraid this family will no longer welcome you." As soon as the words fell, Louise over there just turned around and looked at him, and said bluntly: "George, have you played enough, can you really find nothing better to do?" "Aren't I cleaning up?" George responded hastily. But when he reached for the chess piece that was still in the opponent's hand, he found that "Shiro" was looking at Louise with terrifying eyes. Then "Bai" turned to look at him, those eyes seemed to be filled with black shattered glass, and the flames reflected in the eyes could not be ignored. "That's right," "Bai" said slowly, "Given who she is and how she treats you, I hate her, very much. Now do you still want me to come again?" George found that the eyes of "Bai" looking at him were no longer scary, and the chess piece held by him still had his warmth, which was a relief. He hesitated, finally cleared his throat, and said, "See you tomorrow." "Bai" tilted his mouth again, showing his usual wry smile. "Tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, any time, as long as you call me." He said, "But the ending will not change, you will never be able to defeat me." Time has proved that "white" is not boasting. On the other hand, as far as the concept of time is concerned, George found that it is more appropriate to measure time by game by game, endless chess game, or every move in a game, and it is more practical than any device such as a calendar or a clock. This discovery was heartening; but even more heartening was the fact that he finally saw the world he was in, and when he saw it, everything around him changed, as if looking through the other side of binoculars .People who push and shove, throw cold arrows everywhere, and always ask for an explanation or an apology are no longer hiding, more ruthless than ever, and at the same time ignore him more and more, people like them, no matter how far you go No matter how close, it will never be possible to become a true bosom friend with you. There was only one exception: Louise.Every night, the world shrinks to nothing but a chessboard and "Shiro" sitting comfortably in the opposite chair. But Louise, who was sitting in the corner of the room knitting a sweater, broke the harmony, and her resentment grew stronger. This resentment will spread to George's side from time to time, manifested as irritable complaints and questioning, without giving people a chance to breathe. "How can you waste every minute on this stupid game!" She questioned, "Don't you have anything to talk to me?" There is nothing to talk about since the beginning of the year.Because he realizes that he has neither a say nor a decision-making power when it comes to running the house, and that he's not one to talk about the parents in the office. In Louise's words, his attitude of completely keeping himself out of the world and not caring about worldly affairs is simply—pretentious. "She's doing it right." Bai once tried to explain with sarcasm, "If you keep your house spotless and orderly, Louise will be so embarrassed. And if she knows your colleagues, Will entertain them, make friends with them, and gossip like no one else. No, no, in comparison, things are much better now, she operates her vacuum cleaner, there is no nasty gossip." As usual, White's attitude made George very angry. "You're so well-rounded with all the nonsense you've come up with for no reason," he roared. "Tell me, how do you know Louise so well?" "Bai" looked at him with dim eyes and said, "I know what you know, no more and no less." Such remarks made George sad and angry, but for the sake of the chess game in front of him, he endured it.Once Louise doesn't speak, the whole world becomes unreal, and the only real thing is the chessboard in front of her. "Bai" hung his hand in the air to move the chess pieces, attacked neatly, and cleared all obstacles with his extraordinary wisdom. George was only jealous and ashamed of all this. In fact, George would have been upset if he found any flaws in White.Of course, his shortcoming is not manifested in playing chess, but that he will always talk about the truth contained in the chess skillfully but uncomfortably at the critical moment, and this topic will always attack George for being too depraved and too Recklessness ends. "Do you know that you can often observe a person's character through his strategy when playing chess." Once "Bai" said so, "Knowing this, it is not difficult to understand why you are always on the defensive—and Always lose." Talking like that was bad enough, but there was something even worse, and White would behave when Louise forcibly interrupted them—telling George to do this or that or simply ordering him not to play. Almost furious. He stared at Louise motionlessly, his eyes gleaming with extreme hatred, as if two flames were burning inside. Once Louise went so far that she picked up a piece from the board and dropped it into the box. "Bai" stood up with a whoosh, aggressive, and George jumped up quickly to prevent him from making any drastic moves.Louise stared at him intently. "You don't have to jump up," she snapped. "I didn't break anything. But I tell you, George Hunicke, if you keep playing this silly game, I'll actually do something." .I'll smash everything to pieces and see if you can get back to being a normal person!" "Tell her!" said "Bai," "quick, why don't you hit her back!" And George, caught between these two groups of angry flames, could only stand there, shaking his head helplessly. This was the trigger, and since then, "Bai"'s attitude has changed: every word and every word hides sinister intentions. "If she learns how to play," he said, "she'll respect the pieces, and you won't have to be afraid of her." "If she can," retorted George vehemently, "Louis is too busy to learn to play chess." "Bai" turned his chair to look at her, then turned back again, with a grim smile on his face. "She's knitting. As far as I remember, she's always knitting. You call that 'too busy'?" "Isn't it?" "No," said White, "I don't think so. Penelope hid behind her loom from unwanted suitors until her husband returned some years later. And Louise Knitting sweaters all day is actually escaping from life, and only death awaits her. She is not enjoying it, and anyone can tell at a glance. Every time the flying stitches go around, she is one step closer to death. However, she doesn't know it and is still happy about it." "Just because she doesn't play chess, you made up so much?" George growled suspiciously. "It's not just chess," said Bai, "it's life." "You say life, so, what do you think of the word 'life'?" "Rich in meaning," said Bai. "Curiosity, creativity, and the ability to perceive rich emotions. Oh, so rich." "Indeed, it's very rich." George laughed. "They're all good words with extraordinary meaning." "Bai" tightened his lips, smiled sarcastically, and said, "It's too rich. I'm afraid it's beyond Louise's acceptance. Ability." After speaking, he moved the pieces and brought George's attention back to the chessboard. "White" seems to have discovered George's weakness, and then continued to stimulate that point with sadistic pleasure. He was always as quick in a conversation as he was in a game of chess: ruthless, precise, always quick and bold, pushing George into a situation from which he had no escape.George, on the other hand, was miserable and helpless. He wanted to beg him to stop mentioning Louise, never to mention it again, but he couldn't.Something in George's heart reminded him that liking to argue is part of "white", just like his excellent chess skills, and if you want to accept him, you must accept all of him. George needed him, desperately, especially on that terrible night when George came home and told Louise that he was going to be off work for a while - George needed him more than ever.Seeing that Louise's face was stretched and pale, George hastened to add that he wasn't fired - of course not - but needed a break to get his senses back. But her attitude still hasn't improved. The next scene has Louise standing in front of him, emotionally, spouting down on him.George only felt uncomfortable and couldn't stand still. He found that what "Bai" said was like a torrent rushing in his mind.It wasn't until Louise said he was tired, sat exhausted in the armchair, staring blankly at the wall in front of him, and picked up the fabric from his lap for comfort, and he could finally sit down at the table to catch his breath. I felt the torrent of pain in my heart slowly recede. "There is a once-and-for-all solution." "Bai" said softly, looking at Louise with rolling eyes, "Once you think about it, you will find that this method is extremely simple." George felt a chill run through him.He said hoarsely, "I don't want to hear it." "Bai" said persistently, "George, have you ever noticed that ridiculous picture hanging on the wall, framed in a misshapen baroque frame. Louise likes that picture very much, it's like a It’s like a flute player in an orchestra playing too loudly to make himself stand out.” George focused on the chessboard and said, "You go first." "Oh, chess," said White, "George, we can play chess later. I'd rather talk to you now about this room—the whole cozy room, to be exact—if it was all yours." , George, belongs to you alone." "I'd rather play chess," George begged. "George, there is one more thing." "Bai" spoke slowly, and when he slowly leaned over, George saw his reflection in his eyes again, staring at him strangely, "Another thing Good thing to think about. What if you were the only one in this room, all alone in the whole house? No one would come running up to you and tell you, 'Okay, stop playing'. Morning, At noon or night, you can play whenever you want, as long as you want, you can play all night! "And that's not all, George. You could throw that picture out and trade it for something nice to hang on the wall: a few nice oil paintings, for example--be careful not to exaggerate--choose a few that will catch your eye at first glance. Paintings that move you so much that you want to see them every day when you go home. "And records! George, I know the record business well. There's a lot of really good music coming out now. Try to think of it. There's music like that floating around the house: operas, symphonies, concertos, quartets—you take your pick." , be completely loyal to your heart!" The reflection in his eyes was getting closer, and the series of horrible words, as well as the joy in speaking, made George's head dizzy for a while. He clapped his hands next to his ears and shook his head vigorously. "You're crazy!" he yelled, "Shut up!" But he was horrified to find that even if he covered his ears, he could still hear the voice of "Bai" clearly. "Are you worried about being lonely, George? It's silly to worry about that. There's going to be a lot of people who want to befriend you, talk to you, and better yet, listen to you. And maybe someone else will fall in love with you." ,if you are willing to." "Lonely?" George asked in disbelief. "You think I'm worried about being lonely?" "Then what is it?" "You should be as clear as I am." George's voice trembled, "What you are leading me to do. How can you think that I, an upright man, can do such cruel things!" "Bai" pursed his lips contemptuously. "Is there anything more cruel than a weak and stupid woman who spends her whole life marrying a man who is far superior to her, and then pulls him down to the same level as herself in order to hide her weakness and stupidity?" "You have no right to say that about Louise!" "Of course I have the right." "Bai" said sarcastically, but for some reason, George knew in his heart that this was indeed the truth. In order to suppress the growing uneasiness, he gripped the edge of the table. "I wouldn't do that!" he said distractedly. "Never, get it!" "But it's bound to happen!" "Bai"'s voice was blatantly terrifying, and George couldn't help raising his head to look at Louise, who was walking towards the table with heavy steps. She stood by the table, her lips parted and closed angrily.George shook off his chaotic thoughts before finally hearing her voice. She repeated the same words over and over again. "You bastard!" she yelled furiously. "The chess! I've had enough!" She swept her hand across the board suddenly, knocking everything on the floor. "No!" shouted George, not to Louise, but to White standing in front of Louise, holding a heavy poker in his hand. "No!" cried George again, throwing himself at the poker, but he knew it was too late. Louise might be upset that she ended up in a dirty police evidence box; and she would definitely be upset that the evidence box was dragged all the way from the house, leaving unsightly marks on the carefully waxed wooden floor. Yelling (she does have a reason for it). After the assistants left, Detective Lund closed the door and returned to the living room. Apparently, the sheriff had finished interrogating the little man sitting at the chessboard, and was visibly less than satisfied. He paced in the middle of the room, studying his notes with a frown. The little man looked at him without saying a word, with a blank expression on his face. "All right?" Detective Lund asked.
