Dante Club 马修·珀尔 1904Words 2018-03-18
Fields, standing on tiptoe, seeing Longfellow and Holmes coming in his direction, called out, "Search the pier!" Holmes and Longfellow waved to the Harbor Master and described Bucky to him. "Then who are you?" "We are his friends," cried Holmes. "Tell us, where is he?" Fields caught up with them at last. "Oh, I saw him come into this port," replied the harbor master slowly, and they were left to worry. "He should have boarded this boat, and he was extremely anxious at the time." He pointed to a small boat in the sea that could carry up to five guests.

"Well, that little three-masted ship can't go very far. What direction is it going?" asked Fields. "This? That's just a transshipment ship, sir. The Anonimo is too big to dock, so it stays out of port. See?" Its outline was faintly visible in the mist, appearing and disappearing from time to time, it was indeed a big ship, not at all smaller than the big ships they had seen. "Oh, your friend is eager to get on board, I think so. The little three-masted ship he was in was carrying the last of the belated passengers. As soon as the passengers were on board, the Anonimo will drive away."

"Where are you going?" Fields asked, his heart sinking. "Crossing the Atlantic, sir." The harbor master glanced at the log book. "First stop at Marseilles, then, aha, found it, sailed to Italy!" Dr. Holmes arrived at the theater just in time to give a popular lecture. The audience instead thought he was the most important speaker because his speech was delayed.Longfellow and Fields sat in the second row, listening attentively. Next to them were Dr. Holmes' youngest son, Neddy, and Amelia, and Holmes' brother, John.In the second of three sold-out talks arranged by Fields, Holmes analyzed war-related treatments.

Holmes told the audience that recovery is a living process greatly influenced by the mental state of the patient. We can often find that for the same injury in battle, the winning soldier heals quickly, while the soldier who has just suffered a defeat may die. "Therefore there is a middle ground between science and poetry, that is to say, there are some people who, justly, are called wise men, who are particularly nosy." Holmes looked at the row where his family and friends sat and noticed an empty seat, reserved for Holmes Jr. "During the war, my older son was wounded so many times that he got new buttonholes in his favorite waistcoat and it was 'Uncle Sam' who sent him home." The audience laughed. "There are still many people whose hearts are broken by this war, even though the bullets did not mark their clothes."

After the speech, the audience had to applaud and praise.Longfellow and Holmes then followed the publisher back to New Corner and waited for Lowell in the author's reception room.It was unanimously decided that the Dante Club would hold a seminar on translation at Craigie House next Wednesday. According to the plan, the meeting has two purposes.First of all, dispel Green's worries about the status quo of the translation of "The Divine Comedy", and explain to him the strange things he and Holden have seen with their own eyes.If Green hadn't stepped in this time, maybe they would have already extracted the information he knew from Bucky's mouth, and they should try their best to avoid such incidents from happening again.Second, and perhaps more importantly, was to make sure Longfellow continued to translate. At the end of this year, Florence will hold the Dante Festival to commemorate the 600th anniversary of Dante's birth.Longfellow had promised to send a translation of the Inferno to the festival committee, so as not to be dishonest.

Although Longfellow did not want to admit it, he knew very well that he would not be able to finish the translation of "Inferno" before the end of 1865, unless their investigation suddenly made miraculous progress.Although the matter has come to this point, he has not slack off, and has already done translation work alone at night. There was a hope in his heart, that the Divine Comedy would give him the wisdom to unravel the mystery of the deaths of Healy and Talbot. "Is Mr. Lowell there?" Someone knocked on the door of the author's reception room and asked in a low voice.

The poets are exhausted. "I'm afraid he's not here," replied Fields gruffly, making no effort to conceal his irritation at the invisible interlocutor. "great!" As soon as the words were finished, the well-dressed Boston tycoon, Phinis Jannison, wearing a white coat and a white top hat, pushed the door and walked in, then slammed the door behind him, without a trace of sullen expression on his face. "Your clerk said you could be found here, Mr. Fields. I wanted to have a quick talk about Lowell, and it's fine that he's not here." He took off his silk top hat and threw it into Fields's. On the iron clothes hanger, a shiny head of hair was exposed. The hair was combed to the left in a western style, obediently, like the handrail of the stairs. "Mr Lowell is in trouble."

The visitor gasped with excitement at the sight of the two poets.Almost on one knee, he seized the hands of Holmes and Longfellow, and touched them as if they were decanters of the most precious and purest wine. Jannison's vast wealth, his patronage of artists, his willingness to spend money to enhance his appreciation of belles-letter, and his enjoyment of doing so;Janison found a chair for himself and sat down. "Mr. Fields, Mr. Longfellow, and Dr. Holmes," he called them by name one by one, artificially and politely, "you are all good friends of Lowell, and it is my honor to know you all, because It is only through genius that one can really know another genius."

Holmes interrupted him nervously: "Mr. Jannison, what's the matter with Lowell?" "I know, doctor." Janison sighed because he had to explain in detail, "I've heard about those hideous Dante incidents. I came here with only one purpose, and that is to help you. Take the necessary action to completely change the course of events."
