Chapter 1 Chapter One

midnight memories 西德尼·谢尔顿 1568Words 2018-03-18
Every night, she woke up screaming from the same nightmare. It was in the middle of a stormy lake, and a man and a woman were viciously pressing her head into the icy water, trying to drown her.At this time, she always woke up in horror, panting and sweating heavily. She has completely forgotten who she really is, and has no memory of anything in the past. She spoke English—but she had no idea what country she was from, or how she ended up in this small Catholic monastery in Greece. After a while, a flickering memory and vague, fleeting impressions gradually began to flash through her mind. But they always come and go in a flash, so she has never had time to capture and determine.Fragments of these memories would suddenly occupy her mind when she wasn't looking, throwing her thoughts into chaos as a result.

At first, she wanted to find out everything about herself from the nuns around her.But later she discovered that those friendly and considerate nuns were not allowed to chat with outsiders casually, and the only one in the monastery who was not restricted by this precept was the elderly and frail Mother Teresa. "Can you tell me who I am?" "No, my child," replied Sister Teresa. "How did I get here?" "At the foot of that mountain there is a village called Ioannina. Our two sisters found you in a small boat on the lake during a storm last year. The boat was sinking, God bless you, They rescued you and sent you here."

"But... where did I come from before this?" "I'm sorry, kid. I don't know either." She couldn't be satisfied with that. "Has no one ever asked about me? Has no one ever come to me?" Sister Teresa shook her head: "Never." She was so desperate that she couldn't help crying. She asked again: "Those newspapers... haven't reported my disappearance?" "You know, the monastery rules don't allow us to have any contact with the outside world. We must accept the will of God, boy. We can only thank him for his gift, so you are alive at last."

That was all she could learn. At first, she was too ill to think much about her past. But as the months passed, she slowly regained her strength and began to recover gradually. She now has enough strength to walk around.During the day, she spends her time tending the flat and beautiful garden in the monastery; at night, the mysterious Greek night sky is full of stars, and the gentle breeze brings her the aroma of fried lemons and grapes. The environment here is peaceful and elegant, but she still can't calm down.I'm lost, she told herself. But no one has asked me so far, why?Did I do something evil?who am I?who am I?Who am I? !

Some vague scenes still appear unexpectedly in her mind from time to time. When she woke up one morning, a naked man was stripping her of her farm clothes. Is this also a dream?Or is it something that actually happened in the past?Who is this man?Could it be the man she married?Has she ever had a husband? But she wasn't wearing a wedding ring.In fact, she has nothing. The only possessions she now owned were the black-covered Statue of Sisters and a gold brooch given to her by the Mother Superior. It is shaped like a bird with outstretched wings and its eyes are inlaid with rubies. Here, no one knew who she really was, and they were complete strangers to her.She had no one to turn to, no psychiatrist to warn her that her mental state was on the verge of collapse. If she can't get rid of her terrible past, it will probably lead to insanity.

Residual memories came to her more and more frequently. She felt as if she had walked into a huge maze, surrounded by strange scenes. But these upside-down scenes can't piece together any kind of definite meaning. She saw many soldiers in uniform gathered in a huge studio. They seem to be making a film of some sort.Am I the actress in the film? No, she seems to be in charge of planning the filming. But what exactly am I responsible for?
A soldier came up and gave her a bouquet of flowers. But it's up to you to pay for it.He said to her with a joking smile. Two days later, she dreamed of the soldier again. She was seeing him off at the airport. She awoke from her dream crying sadly because she was going to lose him.

After that night, her mind could not be calmed down any more. That was not just a dream. It was a fragment of her old life.I must find my past and present. However, to her surprise, a name suddenly popped up from her subconscious late one night.Catherine.My name is Catherine Alexander!
