Chapter 30 The Autobiography of Franklin

I want to start with a book from the eighteenth century. There are few autobiographies in the history of literature, and among the few autobiographies, none is as enduringly interesting as Franklin's Autobiography. This book, like the man, is written very plainly.Franklin has studied under everyone, so the language is beautiful and easy. The charm of this book lies not only in the vivid narration, but also in Franklin's successful portrayal of a lifelike and authentic self-portrait.I do not understand why Americans find so much fault with Franklin, saying that he is a flawed character, his maxims are banal, and his ideals are base.In fact, he is just not romantic. He is shrewd, hardworking and a successful businessman. He blesses his fellow men, but never deceives them, exploiting their failures to his advantage with cunning and humor.

Some of these ends are indeed selfish, but most are disinterested. He loves the finer things in life, but also accepts the tough times with integrity. He was brave and generous, and a good company. He talked witty and sharp, liked wine and women, and made no secret of the pleasure he got from them.He is versatile and has accomplished many things. His life is happy and meaningful. He did a great service to his country, his state, and the city he settled in.In my opinion, he is as typical an American as Dr. Johnson is a typical Englishman.I think there is only one reason why Americans don't like him, and that is that he never makes gimmicks.
