Chapter 21 Chapter One

"Well, we must wait till the future to see how it is," said Mr. Bankes, going into the room from the terrace. "It's so dark it's almost invisible," Andrew said from the beach. "It's almost so dark you can't tell the sea from the land," Prue said. "Shall we keep that lamp burning?" Lily asked as they took off their coats inside. "No," said Prue, "if everybody's in, put it out." "Andrew," she called back, "put out the light in the hall." All the lights in the house were extinguished one by one, except in Mr. Carmichael's room, where he liked to lie and read a little Virgil, and his candles went out much later than the others.
